Thank you Kamon. I did not see the entrance of the triple divided box, or are you locking them in. Was the purpose of putting the bees in the queen delivery box at end,was that just to keep the queen cells warm while you move round the apiary. I'm not a beginner nor anywhere near your level of knowledge or confidence so a bit of the video went too fast for me. I like more space to absorb it not so rushed but I understand you want to keep the vids short and I can always watch twice. Thank you none the less for your help

It’s been a few years since I raised my own queen. But the prices of queens is crazy. I may have to pull out the gear and start raising queens again. Check with your local clubs. Become a member. A number of clubs up my way are producing queen cells for their members. One, you get to learn to install queen cells and work backwards to raising your own queens.

Hey Kaymon , recently I purchased one gallon internal frame feeders from Mann Lake . I like this design with the wooden caps with the plastic tube inserts for each hole . The problem is they’re way too tight to use even when one frame is removed from a Mann Lake ten frame hive body . Yet they fit perfectly in their five frame nuc hives after removing one frame . I would hate to think I would have to remove two frames from a ten frame deep hive body also made by Mann Lake. So I decided that these frame feeders will be used to feed my five frame nucleus colonies I’ll be raising next year . I’m already getting stoked for next year , LoL!
@kamonreynolds
@kamonreynolds 3 жыл бұрын
You and me both Christian! I have learned a lot this year and plan to do better and have more fun in 2022. Have you looked at the 1.5 gallon mann lake feeder? They take up the space of 2 frames in the top deep but it fits just right without a big or too small gap anywhere.

In Australia we can buy icing mixture, or pure icing sugar. Icing mixture doesn’t clump/harden unless is gets wet because it has corn starch, pure icing sugar needs to be used ASAP after opening the pack otherwise it turns into a solid hard lump.

Hi Kamon, Mark here from Au. Over here, powdered sugar (icing suger) does not have corn flour but Icing Mixture does. I blitz normal white sugar in a blender and add glucose syrup to make the bee fondant. Great videos, keep up the good work. I only wish that the price here for wood to make boxes was not 5x the price as it is there. (And that is if we could get it) . Even the foil wrapped bubble-wrap is $285 a roll. I try hard to copy most of your equipment and breeding methods.

Hi Kamon, I’m wondering if you’d make a video for people like me who are not beekeepers but who want to do the right thing by bees in their neighbourhood. What would be helpful is information about using pesticides, growing flowering plants, how to avoid getting stung and what to do if you do get stung, what to do if a swarm shows up nearby, if it is a good idea to put out honey when there’s not a lot of flowers about, how far foraging bees travel from their hive, and anything you think we ought to know. Whatever you’d be willing to put in a video for non-beekeepers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks from Australia.

If the worker bees fly back to the original hives, how do these nucs take advantage of a nectar flow? All they would have is the frame of honey you put into the nuc and nurse bees to care for the brood.
@kamonreynolds

Kaymon, here in this part of Canada we have a lot of small dearth periods. Do you think there would be much of an issue with not using the foil cover sheet and instead placing a queen excluder on top of the 3x3 nuc, followed by a tall inner cover and a single pail feeder or ceracell feeder on the top servicing all 3 nucs?

Bees make the Queen Cells themselves ! You can make a tiny Wax cup, using a rounded end of dowel, dipped in bees wax, to graft eggs into. These are 'glued on' using a tiny dot of hot wax to attach them to your grafting frame.... Again bees will draw these down to make Queen Cells (look like natural peanut in its shell.) 😏

Are they Queen "Cups" or actual Queen "Cells" ?!? The Cup is just trying out their Wax skills, no egg in it, no big deal... Cups look like Acorn Cups, minus the Acorn. 😉 The Queen Cell, is something to deal with, they look like Peanuts, hanging down on the frame. Sounds like the package is to Strong in population, to space, laying cell availability, and or temperature in the Hive. (If it's full, busy, kinda stuffy, then 'some bees think it's time to check out ! ) Do a Split, using Queen Cells, if they are what you see. If not, take the Queen Cups down (mash them.) Review on your next inspection. Tip: Do your inspections every 7 days at this time of Year (eg Swarm Season) that way, you can manage, or break the cycle leading to a swarm !?! 👍 Hope this helps. 🤗 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝

Question. So if you dont pull out the old queen and put the new cell in, that new queen will always kill the old queen?

Greetings. I regularly watch your channel. I have a question, whether that cover leaks water, and can it be made from an ordinary plank - board? Also, does syrup spoil when exposed to the Sun? Thanks in advance!

Kamon is it okay to pull queen cells 8 days after grafting and place in nucs?

@@kamonreynolds Moved the four queen cells yesterday 8-July-2022. Cells looked beautiful. I grafted 24 and got 4 drawn out and capped 4 days after grafting. Yesterday was 8 days after grafting. Only getting 4 out of 24 I figured I would order a pair of dental binoculars 3.5 power to help me see the real young larvae better. I tried them today 09-July-2022. Was able to see some real little larvae today. Grafted only 8 just to make sure I didn't chill them. I know it is late in the season for northern Minnesota to be grafting and the new queens may not be laying up real well by the time I check them on 4-August-2022 but what do I have to lose right? If I didn't try grafting with my new vision enhancement how can I know if they are the key to my ability to graft successfully right? Not like I am losing bees when I plan to stock the mating boxes with the bees that raised the cells. Those bees will likely be dead by winter anyway. And if nothing else I can shake bees into these new queens from my frame laying queens and try to take them through winter with candy boards right? Kamon is this the right mindset to have?

How do you replace old living queen with new cell. Do you kill her and put cell in right away or do you wait 8 hours or so

Either way works. We use the orange cell protectors when we do it immediately as added insurance

You let them lay for 21 days or you pull them 21 days after dropping the cells?
@kamonreynolds
@kamonreynolds 3 жыл бұрын
I let mine lay for 21 days. That is ideal and mot of the queens I raise are for myself OR for nuc customers and they mate in the nuc anyways so it is easy to let them lay 21 before selling

@@kamonreynolds If you install the cell, check in 14 days, and observe that she has already started laying - then how do you figure the 21 days of laying? Just wait 21 days from the 14-day check-in?

Common practice to ship queens like that but couldn't you ship the queens by adding workers to the cages.if it gets hot during shipping the bees congregate on the wire mesh and overheat the caged queens.

A local bee keeper said that the bees just are not happy with the queen, which happens a lot with package bees. If that is true I think maybe the queen bee's booty wasn't big enough. :-)
@kamonreynolds
@kamonreynolds 3 жыл бұрын
Hey DC Rogers. That does happen with package queens somewhat often. There are so many things we just don't know but perhaps she cant produce pheromones right or is laying quite right. Hopefully they will supersede her successfully and the daughter is like usual better

HI , NO QUEEN IN THE HIVE CAN THE BEES STILL BRING HONEY IN . OR NOT FOR THE SUPERS ?
@russellkoopman3004
@russellkoopman3004 3 жыл бұрын
When there is no queen in the box then the hive has no young larvae to feed and so all the nectar goes to honey. Of course the age of the bees will increase and they will start to die off and dwindle. By requeen on a very strong hive during a strong flow that 2 - 3 week gap with no mouths to feed will give you a lot of honey and give you a brood break and a chance to use OAV to control your mites.
