My turtles in the big pond are floating and not in a good way. They can’t submerge and I don’t know why. The ponds are outrageously low and algae is building up in the warm water. This problem needs to be solved!

Hi Kenan, when I worked as an Environmental Health Officer in QLD I came across this a few times. When water levels got low and the heat created a change in the density of the top layer the water would turn over. This released toxins trapped in the silt. It also increased the nutrient levels resulting in botulinum toxins and cynobactrium blooms. The solution is reduce the bio load and the rain will take care of the rest. The sludge can be pumped onto the grass areas where no animals are kept. Having a biofilter with strong water flow to filter out the bio load. ED has some great designes for natural ponds which work well. I hope they go well.

The vet’s diagnosis is spot-on; a build-up in gas is causing the turtles to float. Also, the flatulence bears this out. I’ve seen this occur a couple times in aquatic species. An increased water flow and the addition of a heavily planted bio-filter would decrease the toxins in the water. I’m amazed there are no water plants whatsoever in a (natural?) pond in Florida. Floating species like Water hyacinth & Water lettuce with large submerged root systems provide an excellent natural interface between water & air. They do an amazing job of filtering out waste and help shade the water from algae blooms. Charlie Moorecroft has the right idea in his Spotted turtle enclosure, it’s covered with floating aquatic plants. Blake’s Caiman enclosure is another good example.

I talked to someone who dredged their large natural pond. Drained it and tested the water. Turned out it needed its ph balance treated badly. It was very on the alkaline side up near 8.0 some where. He tried to remove all the fish and life in or near the pond and treated it. I am sure he didn’t put vinegar in it but who knows maybe he did. Lol😊He lived in Georgia at the time. It was a big project … but I don’t think his pond was as big as yours. He also had lots of older kids to help out. I just saw you had your turts looked at. Oh good.

not a professional here but i think you re very well on the right track with the gas buildup inside their intestine being the main problem why did it happen? could ofcourse be multiple thing but i believe its simply a change of their gut bacteria due to high temperatures and changed eating patterns i dont think they ingested anything 'wrong' or poisonous, they are simply struggling with digestion as a whole due to the weather and ofcourse, dirty stagnant water isnt helping at all i would keep the in a clean, cold tub out of the direct sun, maybe with a pump for water flow that they have to work with and see if they return back to normal by the time it rains again (should be right now after the big storm from the recent days)

I know those bails of barley are good for algae blooms (I couldn’t remember the grain.) A friend once used it upstate NY and it cleared the (green) algae out pretty well. Hi Kenan. What about planting up your pond with marginal, submerged and surface plants to shade more from the sun and use up some of the nutrients in the water to reduce algea bloom and increase water quality? It would be costly up front to put in enough plants to get ahead of the turtles grazing. Just a thought. Hope they all recover.

Hello, I am sorry for the infection of that turtle, I hope you recover soon. On the other hand, it is my opinion, having that fantastic place that you have, I would choose to manage it better so that you could see and control possible infections or pests with greater control. I understand that the idea is to have a natural environment that is most similar to the ecosystem in freedom but with that expanse of water you cannot have a minimum of visual control for each specimen. It is very, very complicated. It would be great if you opted for a reorganization of the terrain and, for the most part, individualize the species. in areas of better control for you, I repeat, it is my opinion, nothing more, and the council does a great job for it and I congratulate you from Spain, greetings and I hope you like the advice or opinion 👍🏻🐢

what is weird about this is something similar happens to some fish where there is swim bladder gets infected or their intestines get infected and they fill up with gas and they call it bloat and they all start swimming weird they're swimming either near the surface Or swim down to the bottom and can't get up off the off the substrate usually the fish I've seen this happen to our Grammys specifically Opaline or snakeskin those kind of garams they just seem to be prone to it in the trade aquariums so and that is sometimes hugely a bacterial infection and usually it causes clogging of the intestines and blocking of the air bladder the swim bladder usually what helps is feeding them shelled green peas so if you get green peas you take off the shell you feed those to the fish they seem to perk up so maybe it's just a roughage is some more substantial and it helps pushing through doesn't always work some people have to resort to puncturing the swim bladder or the intestines with a needle and letting the extra gas escape with the pressure is relieved and that usually brings the fish around so they can eat again and eat more fiber's diet might be just need to feed the the turtles more more fiber at that age they need some metamucil. I'm just really trying to brainstorm what is going on because I'm totally confused as to why this is happening I don't think it should be happening but you never know

Fish have swim bladders, turtles don’t. The symptoms they present may be similar but the causes can vary. When I was involved in a work-study program at the NY Aquarium I learned the importance of natural bio-filtration for both fresh-water & marine enclosed systems. It will mediate the cause, not just alleviate the symptoms which is the ultimate goal.

I think there were snappers in with the gators at Fred’s place years ago. I’ve seen them kept together at zoos although both species were much smaller. I don’t know if feeding them well at that size would make a difference(?)

Get a water pump to help circulate the water and help create gas exchange.

was about to comment fish are indeed the first indication of water quality , and you already mention it , if its foul the fish would be first to start floating , the previous video you did some heavy feeding of pellets , which could be one of the factors ?

That pond really needs a aquascape makeover.... it might be better it it was more like 3 ponds and a deep stream around the island with a big wetland filter!
@The_Crucible714

Or… the island itself can be transformed into a large wetland bio filter with mangrove trees, pond apple trees, etc, etc.. That would be wild.

It really does need to be aerated…especially with a huge algae bloom. One good storm could wipe out your fish in there.

Maybe experiment with solar pump and create some kind of water flow, small current

Hopefully the turtles are OK! I don't know what the time line of this video is compared to Paul Cuffaro's released on Friday June 14th, but maybe you've gotten the rain you were hoping for when filming this video...

It says June 10 in the description. I'm thinking the ponds should be fuller, if not full, by now.
