I recently rescued a russian tortoise. Though not "abused", I'm afraid he was quite neglected. He was being kept in a large, plastic tub, under the dining room table without UVA/UVB lights, and without any special source of heat, other than what ever temp the mobile home was kept at, in Colorado. Not sure if he's ever really been outside, but I know his substrate was wood chips from their front yard (not good). I'm guessing his diet hasn't been the best either, but at least his waste was removed often. I believe they loved him, but didn't have any idea how to care for him. He is a trooper, though. Despite all this, he appears to be ok. I was in no way prepared to take him in, but did so gladly. I'd love if you could do an episode about shell rot and recognizing deficiencies in tortoises, and how to help them. My little guy has serious issues with his shell and I don't know what to do. Thanks!

I live in Southern California, I just found a Russian tortoise on the street yesterday. It's early March so I think it might just came out from its hibernation. I think it's a wild one because it has scratched up shell (on the belly side) and its nail got grounded very short. But it has bright eyes and it's very active and eager to eat (particularly dandelions)

Anytime I go through the comment section on his videos there are quite a few disturbing comments in that a lot of people are getting pets before doing any research on the animal before hand whatsoever so in turn are seriously neglecting it. Also their commenting questions that they should be taking up with a vet, not a comment section. I just can't understand the mind set of some people... You should not be getting a pet without doing research on the animal first, seriously people.

I have 4 Greeks and I love them. I live in Israel, and they just walked into my back yard! All I had to do was put down a board to make the yard fully enclosed, and now I'm creating all kinds of fun habitats for them. I will never sell if they have any babies, but I may keep the little ones and release the adults back into the wild. I'm not sure yet. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

So happened upon what I think is a baby Russian Tortoise (maybe a month old when I found him) in my front yard about 6 months ago and tried to find the original owner but had no luck. I decided to keep him/her (not sure what it is) even though I had no prior knowledge of tortoises or even reptiles. I asked around and went on plenty of forums and youtube channels and asked my local pet store what I should be doing for him but I feel like I'm still inadequately supplying him of all that these tortoises need. I've got a temporary indoor enclosure for him until I can get moved into my new house and build him a nice outdoor one (I live in central California so I think that is appropriate climate). He's on soft wood chips/bark of some sort right now (although I would like to change it soon) and I have a sizeable hideout in the basking area with the appropriate heating and lighting lamps. I feed him assorted leafy greens that I rotate weekly and try to combine two at a time so he has a varied diet. He has a water dish that I change daily and a few small rocks scattered around so he can file at his nails and beak. The reason I feel I am not treating him correctly is that the skin on his neck and legs looks as if it is peeling slightly and when he secretes his urine it is almost entirely liquid, not a white solid as I have seen mentioned numerous places. I try repeatedly to soak him and he seems as though he hates it, running around quickly and pushing at all edges of the container as if trying to escape. ANY advice would be helpful and greatly appreciated since I am very new to tortoises and just want lil Reggie to be happy and healthy. Thank you!
@JimPIckins
@JimPIckins 6 жыл бұрын
Bailey Brogan You NEED to find a reptile vet. This is not the place! The urine should not be solid. Its a liquid with white gooey substrate in it. If it comes out as a dry powder or hard rock it means they are dehydrated. I hope you got not just heat but also UVB and are changing the bulb every 6-9 months. He should be soaked once bi weekly at a minimum.
@bbrogan6084
@bbrogan6084 6 жыл бұрын
Jim Pickins his urine isn’t a solid and I didn’t mean that I thought it should be I meant that it’s not the gooey stuff you mentioned but it’s entirely a liquid. I do have both the heating and UVB bulbs and both have been changed since I first got them in october. I do soak him at least once a week and he has plenty of clean water available to drink daily. I’ve been searching for a reptile vet in my area but there isn’t a facility I’ve found yet that does reptile care, I haven’t given up looking, just haven’t found one yet.
@JimPIckins
@JimPIckins 6 жыл бұрын
This can happen when they have plenty of hydration. If you soak him less you will most likely see the white gooey substrate. As far as I am aware of its no reason for concern.

Here are some tips that I've learned from owning a Russian tortoise for about 5 months now: 1) Get a flat landscaping rock to put in their enclosure to put their food on. The rock will allow the tortoise to maintain their beak and claws 2) Fruit is okay, in moderation. Every now and then I'll give mine a bit of apple, banana, or strawberry. He loves it. 3) They like to climb for fun. Add a bit of vertical inclines in the enclosure, but don't underestimate what they can climb. Mine is capable of getting on top of his plastic hide for fun. 4) They like to dig. Make sure that the substrate is about 6 inches deep. Mine will sometimes dig under his water bowl and sleep there.

Do you think it would be possible to have a Russian tortoise and closure cohabitating with a small flock of quail if they were sectioned off?. I mainly want them to all have the same heat source and different rooms. I stay in Cincinnati Ohio so this would be a spring and summer and enclosure.

I adopted 2 Russian tortoises a little over a year ago. I don’t know how old they are. I live in upstate NY. Most of the time i keep them indoors, with lamps and 2 nice habitats, one for the day and one for night. When i have a full day free, I’ll let them roam around the yard while i keep an eye on them. Our French bulldog keeps his eyes on them, too. But I don’t let him come in contact with them. My tortoises’ favorite food is green beans. They go crazy for them.

I have a russian tortoise but I have read that is not so good to give them fruit because it could give them parasites, however I want my little guy to be hydrated so I soak him once a week and I also have a small bowl of water in his cage but I dont know if thats enough or should I feed him some watermelon every once in a while

I’ve heard with these turtles that the females grow larger than the males.

Do you have any good breeders in mind? Im in the state of VA and havent found a good breeder. The only places ive found is petco and petsmart and i know just from looking at them that they are not well.

Would the Zoo Med Tropical UVB & Heat Lighting Kit be the right one or would I have to get the desert version of those lights?

thank you for the very informative information. i have two lulu and henry. i soak them every other week am i doing ok in that area? i live in lancaster california in the antelope valley area lancaster california. in the summer time they spend their time outside. my henry if i do not bring him in at night i should say catch him while he is still active..he burrows . is that ok? been getting down to 70's and the daytime temp is about 100+ now. Can they say outside all night ? i rather they did..to get the exercise during the day. sorry for the lengthening question. so far they both are doing very well for a first time tortoise mom

I have kept my adult female Russian tortoise in my outdoor enclosure for 8 years. They can dig tunnels or burrow into the ground to avoid frost. It get down to minus 5 degrees F here in Eastern Oregon. I have created an extra deep hibernation chamber 30 inches under the soil surface filled with leaf and peatmoss and some soil. They are very winter hardy animals as you would have learned elsewhere since you wrote this question. . All Night? Of course they can. ..if they can burrow and avoid frost and cold rain and cold.
