Very instructive video Kamryn. Though the video mainly aims at opening-middlegame transitions for beginners trying to be intermediates this also can be applies to intermediates trying to play more seriously into masters if these concepts are taken more objectively in the middlegame. The idea of maintaining pawn tension and not going for tactics when there are none really is the next step after you understand the ideas in the video. Most advanced players like to have stable play rather than dynamic play (unless its blitz). For that reason, it is unlikely youll immediately have a tactic. To play waiting moves to provoke or induce weaknesses and wait to exhaust their attack before countering it, is an useful skill that even players from 1500-2000 struggle with. Maybe this could be a follow up video in a few months after your done with the fundamentals however it will depend on the direction you take the beginner lessons. Instructive insofar as taking advantage of beginners mistakes in the opening, I would like to see a video explaining what the ideas are behind the openings, say the Spanish for eg. What are the plans for white in the RL? What defence should black adopt to counter whites plans.

Can you explain Checks, Captures, Threats?

The idea essentially is that in any given position where there are tactics, the 1st thing you look for is if you have a check as that is a forcing move. See if that check achieves progress. If there are no good checks then you see if you have any captures. See if the capture is any good. If there are none, look for attacks. Attacks meaning bringing activity to your pieces to create play on the position to create a threat on either winning material or delivering checkmate.

The final move in the video at 18:00 appears to be a mistake and made me pause the video because of 1.Rc5?! Na4!? But after looking more closely, the reply 2.Rc7+ works. For other viewers, do you see why? Still I think I would have played 1.Rc7+ and then tried to follow Seirawan's advice from "Winning Chess Strategies" for when you're ahead: consolidate, get the king safe, and then go after targets.

Thanks! Can you talk about when to move the pawns in front of your King? (Sorry if you have already mentioned this). I'm always afraid to get checkmated on the back rank but I think it's supposed to be bad to move the pawns until you have to.

Kamryn at about the 18 minute mark it appeared Black had a back rank checkmate threat. Did I miss something?

White's knight is covering the d1 square if I'm seeing what you're talking about.
