This was a few days before their match, so at the time I don't think they knew they would be playing yet

its a trap set up to observe how good is Kanak. ML Coach Chin, is not that worrying after observing.

Not really, it was a ping pong diplomacy thing between the USA and China. 8 US players practiced with 8 Chinese players. Kanak was the strongest male so he was paired with Ma Long, I don't think they really considered any of the US players to be threatening, and probably still don't too much compared to other players.
