Hey everyone and welcome back to more Railroads Online! Today we are taking a look at the new iron loop I built in Railroads Online! I was really tired of not having a quick way to get to and from the iron mine and decided to spend the time it takes to build a more gradual route on the opposite side of the iron mine valley that can still allow trains to pass all the way through!

Cooke getting stuck, getting helped by Betsy, and then Betsy getting loose and making it all the way down the mountain, only stopping when she ran out of water, sounds like a Thomas Episode.
@theatlasv8633

It kinda already is with that one episode where Percy runs away from Gordon in full reverse and goes up and down the big hill on the mainline and only stops when he slows down and goes into a pile of dirt. Im not sure what grade gordons hill is but Percy obviously slows down by the end so I can only assume he ran out of water.

You absolutely HAVE to recreate Betsy's full tilt ride down the mountain. Clearly she makes it at full tilt so record it and let us see!!!
@Nevir202
@Nevir202 2 жыл бұрын
I concur, but it's also possible that riding it, he doesn't make it. A lot of games use simplified physics or paused physics for objects outside of player range. It's possible Betsy just froze when she got a certain distance from him, ran out of fuel while he was unloading, then just coasted down the hill as he descended. If so, he might have caught her if he hadn't derailed.

A handy formula helps determine the amount of tractive effort you would need to make it over the grade: 20 x % of grade x tonnage (loco and cars) = tractive effort in lbf.

You should build your routes from the high ground and work down. It lets you get any gradient you want. I have the same type of loop, with 2 to 3% all the way, runs 24 cars with the Mogul in either direction. I got 1000 ore in my smelter this way.

Just incase you weren't thinking this, you should always hook up Betsy or the second train (that your using as a bit of extra humph) within one car (or right to the front loco, like you did) so you can easily get to it, and also you don't have the issues when you hook up a loco that pushes your carts instead of pulls. (I recommend just taking the Betsy from the beginning of your voyage or something else, idk. Your the genious)

Another historic practice railroads would do if they knew their locomotive couldn't take a full tonnage train up a grade was split their consist in half and run the two in "sections" up separately with the same loco. You were so close to the iron mine you could have split your string of cars, taken half up and unloaded them, put them on a siding/spur, and gone back for the rest of the train, and then reassemble your consist afterwards. The Rio Grande narrow gauge had to deal with a 4% grade up Cumbres Pass and would deliberately set out half of their consists on sidings and take separate halves one at a time to the summit. This was of course if a helper engine wasn't available, otherwise they would have had two engines head the train up from the very start. The Cooke moguls were used on the Denver, South Park and Pacific which definitely was a mountain railroad but they probably had more than one of them or other engines to help get up the grades or didnt assign them as heavy of a train to pull. Just my 2 cents :)

Happened to be driving past a big shunt yard not long ago and noticed how the entire thing was on a slope. Taking a closer look i saw them putting together trains with just gravity by letting cars roll down from different lines into one. The noise was rather horrible (metal on metal grinding, banging, clanging, and such) but i figured the idea can be useful here if you ever build a shunt yard for mixed trains. Loco them up, let gravity roll them down.
@rynodino7813

You should just attach Betsy to the back of your tender so when you have these problems instead of running all the way back to a rail yard you already have it as a back up like how most modern trains run with two engines

Look up the Tehachapi Loop. You need something like that in your line to pad out the distance and allow the track to climb at a shallower angle.
@Pystro

That's what I would have suggested. Either put a loop on that plateau right after the unfinished quad-stack bridge. Or in the ravine that the quad-stack bridge is supposed to cross go further to the right. That will also give you a longer rail line. If you go far enough, you could get close enough to the end of the ravine that a single-stacked bridge reaches the ground. Or you could get to a part that's narrow enough that a single span of bridge will reach the far end.
@Thegamingrobot1358
@Thegamingrobot1358 2 жыл бұрын
Stopping on the bridge cut your momentum I reckon if you went full reg non stop you would of been able to drag the train onto the flat or at least get further also sand is only used when wheel slip occurs it does not increase tractive effort (at least to my knowledge).

Love your series! What if for your iron loop, instead of building a giant bridge across that ravine, you have the train follow the side of the mountains and curve back around to the other side? Sure, the route would be a lot longer, but if you build it following that mountain, you’ll have more track, which would allow for a less sloped route. If you keep the 2.5 or 3 percent curving around the mountain, you could probably get rid of the most of (if not all) the 4 percent grades, the Cooke mogul would have no problem at all getting to the iron mine.

Dont knowif someone told you already, but as far asi know the reverser not only determines the rotation direction of the steam engine but also how much the steam valves open. So for steep rail sections you need 100% but as soon as you get to a long, flat section, where you dont need much torque, you can bring down the reverser to conserve steam.

I build 2 or 3 similarly sized (up to 4 layers) wood bridges for my constant 2% iron mine line. I do recommend beginning from the top (especially when your track has an incline). Standing in the valley makes it hard to see from where to where you want to go. It is difficult to space the bridges in the lower layers appropriately to each other and the layers above. And beginning from the bottom can results in unpleasant clipping or gaps between the layers of Bridges/Foundations, that are impossible to hide in the terrain or the stack not having the same height as the rails. I'd recommend filling the valley with a giant, makeshift stack of groundworks and then replacing them from the top with the bridge you want to build.

You can create the position nodes on the ground by lowering the bridge grade, but as the grade is constant you can actually raise the grade back up after touching down on the ground, easy enough to get the bridge to cross the ravine and then you just build the foundation supports under the bridge.

I know I'm late to the party but, instead of running to get a pusher; you could "Double the Hill". When you get stuck come off with however many cars you can get moving. Then either set the empties over to another stub track or just keep reaching back and grabbing as many loads as you can move. Edit - Apply plenty of handbrakes on the cars you leave standing on the hill. That won't be as exciting as pushing but, it's a much more efficient use of your time.

The reverser if kept at a lower level can increase power if the regulator is at full. The reverser increases the cut-off, higher cut-off means more speed less power. At full reverser, it's 75% loss meaning you use 25% of the steam going into the cylinders. A lower reverser level means you use more and waste less steam, an optimum percent is 25-35%.reverser.

You should take a couple Betsy's and haul them up to your distant places like the iron mine and make a mini-shunting yard for them so if you get stuck at the mine again then you don't have to run all the way back to base for a Betsy. You just run up the bridge and into the junction to grab a spare shunter and pull yourself back up, shunt it, then leave.

What about using the Capt. Cooke to first take 9 cars (6 beams and 3 planks) to the iron mine and do a second run with the remaining 3 wood cars and 4 (empty) iron cars. I think the loco could be up to that and you need the iron cars up there anyway. The speed at witch Iron gets produced should not be a problem either.

Since you know Betsy will make it down the mountain at full reg, you should send it so everyone can see how crazy it is.

maybe you could have a climax or a porter as a banker at all of your big climbs? like make a siding next to the hills and such?

I think you need more winding paths, so you can make more elevation with less grade. Also, I picked this up in the middle and went back and watched from the beginning. I'd love to see rail loops between each set of resources that are independent of the depot, but I understand you'd spend days IRL doing that and it's asking a lot.

The little engine that could (Betsy) helped the stranded lumber train up the mountain (the Cooke Mogul that stalled)

Hahah i literally just built this exact route the other day at 3 percent. You have yo get a little wonky with a spiral on the big plateau but it does work. I went down from the mine at 3 and did a half spiral on the plateau to finish the descent at 20 degree radius

Welcome back again. A nice train ride to make it up to the angsty naysayers is exactly what the kAN Doctor ordered.

You're so close, I'd say decouple the last 4 cars, take the 8 to start unloading, then loop around and pull the other 4 in backwards.

If you smooths out some of the sharp turns going up to the iron mine and the Captain Cook might be able to make it because it will maintain a bit more momentum

I think that if you smooth your tight corners a bit, and don't stop on the bridge, you could make it up with this one. Also, ideally you brake trains from the back for much the same reason as you pull instead of pushing. Obviously that's hard to do when you're going solo, but if you have friends, having them ride on the back car to apply brakes might be a good plan.

The steel bridges will put support legs down to the bottom from that height! Heck, I have done them even higher, and they still touch the ground. By the way considering the amount of speed you lost on the climb with the Moguel until it finally came to a standstill you would have already been there with the geared Locomotive time wise. But yes, the Class 70 should handle it fine because I use the normal mountain route with it to the Iron Mine with 20 cars loaded and make it to the mine fine even with a 6% grade.
