Hey everyone and welcome back to more Railroads Online! Today we are back and finally finishing the mega bridge that crosses the massive valley on the way to the iron mine! This bridge was once just a magical floating rail line and now it is a massive mega structure that really fits the environment!

I love the bit of a lip on the cement, foundations that big would be built in sections like that. The core would probably be hollow with rebar cross pieces where you couldn't see for weight management.
@Kemptation5142
@Kemptation5142 2 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure what you mean by rebar crosspieces. Rebar is a terrible material for internal bracing as it’s designed to be completely encased in concrete and is used to strengthen and add ductility to concrete. In any other use it is likely to bend and corrode. Also, rebar wasn’t popularized at this time, and most of those foundations are modeled more akin to masonry structures than concrete pilings.

What you meant to say is "dead man" bracing, not re-bar. These would be heavy, hardened carbon steel bars that would penetrate two opposing walls and be riveted off to a flat plate on the outsides of the wall, at a repeated distance depending on the bowing strength of the stone wall. Then the whole caisson or pillar would be backfilled with dirt and rubble.

Just letting you know, kAN, the derailments galore in the last episode weren't really your fault to begin with, even if the train was really long. There was (and still is) an issue with rolling stock that causes railcars to be far lighter than they should be and as a result they have a habit of derailing spontaneously. This is a known physics issue that is listed on the Discord.

@@mr1ybbob3214 they removed the tree cost a few updates ago. Too many people were complaining about it. It is nice but at the same time it removes the challenge of it. When it costs to cut down trees, it makes you want to plan out better before cutting them down. $2/tree was a bit excessive though. You could go broke just trying to get to the logging camp.

I'm a mechanical engineer, not a civil engineer, but from what I know about truss structures, I'm glad you created the buttresses against the mountain and the concrete supports at the base. I doubt that the structure could hold up itself let alone a train crossing it; in reality of course! You made a truly unique build that I'm definitely loving!

I feel like it's pretty good just maybe put an arch between each pillar and from the pillars to the mountains put a half arch and put 1 more pillar right in the middle and I think that would hold itself (don't quote me on that I have done no math, and won't do any math)

This looks really good kAN. You could spend a lot of time redoing it and making that seam between the upper and lower pillars disappear, but I'd go the opposite way - make the seam bigger, so there's a pronounced ledge there. That's how I would design those pillars as a civil engineer. It would look better, be more realistic, and be easier as well because you don't need to get it as perfect.

kAN, have you tried using the steel viaduct bridge instead of the wood bridge? There may be a physical limit to the wood height, as there was in the prototype. Steel bridges could be ridiculously high... Look up the Kinzua railroad bridge in Mount Jewett PA... it blew over in a tornado 18-20 years ago, but it was 550 feet to the highest point and I think it was 3/4 of mile long. I had the pleasure of riding across it a few times before it failed on a tourist line.

Hello Kan. The class 70 can pull up to 4 hopper cars, 12 plank cars ( teir 2 ) ( minimum ) and a cabooses. you were right also the sand helps to not slip the wheels. The sand gives the engine 10% more friction and that friction gives the engine 5% more power in real life. And my Father's Grandfather was a Steam engine expert. You can put more Lights at the corners of the Cabooses. And 1st, load 4 cars of Planks, 2nd, load 8 cars of Beams, 3rd, load 4 cars of Planks, 4th or last, load 8 cars of Beams Simple..............................

There is actually a way to make 'floating' bridges You have to place it and slant it down, *but* you continue laying it slanted super far down, and then on the other side of thr valley your building across you slope it back up, and sense the dtart and finish are both on ground the middle doesnt care You can only plant it on ground, but using the constant grade you can lift it after you've placed it so its no longer on ground

For track fixing day why not take Betsy II, 1 Bulkhead flatcar (cordwood car), a Boxcar, and a Caboose as your inspection train. Tack gang gets in the caboose, equipment loaded in the boxcar, and have the Bulkhead flatcar loaded with cordwood that won't get unloaded as it is representing fresh railroad ties. Betsy II has a larger firewood capacity so it do longer trips. The only issue is you'd need to dedicate a siding to this train. Its namely for a roleplay perspective but it would look cool

The only thing they would have done in real life, is the two trusses either side of the pillars, and touching the ground, would be a bit skinnier. But as the game doesn't allow you to change that, I think the bridge looks amazing. Must have taken you ages to do! I hope they create a nice modular snap together bridge pieces to make building something that looks this good easier.

Kinda wish I could build track like that. My rails are so basic it's almost pitiful. That and for some reason every time I make a switching yard, siding, or branch line I have a little dip or bump in the track. Still, maybe I keep watching you and Dapper, Kosmo, and BlueWizard and maybe, just maybe inspiration will strike. BTW, on the Discord, I noticed an update is planned that will make all cars and engines have their realistic weights so... I'm thinking it may soon no longer be possible to run 20+car trains as the devs are also putting a table together showing how many cars each locomotive can pull respectively without getting bogged down and on which grades they're best suited for.
