Jon Becher is genuinely an awesome guy. He is every bit the fan/executive he claims to be in his Twitter bio. I've had the good fortune of meeting and chatting with him 3 or 4 times over the years, and he truly cares about the fan base, about the team, and about the area around San Jose. He even was nice enough to buy me a beer once at the Sharks practice facility once, simply because I made the effort to show up to an event that was announced only at the last second by him on Twitter. And not the "I'll cover that as the big boss of this building" type of way. No, he pulled cash out of his wallet and paid for my beer. I seriously cannot say enough good things about Jon. Dude is an absolute fuckin beauty.

I'm not convinced though. Because in golf (as mentioned) and field hockey everybody is right handed by default. If you're right handed irl, your coordination and muscles in your right arm are probably a bit more developed that in your left arm, so you would actually want your dominate hand/arm at the bottom. Because the bottom arm/hand generates the force and precision with which you hit the puck. The top hand just holds the stick and doesn't really do anything. Puck control and deking is done by the bottom hand as well. All the top hand does is hold the stick up.

I was really surprised about the right/left stick segment because how Jesse was describing was exactly the opposite of how I learned. Had to look it up because I felt like I was going crazy, and apparently there's a cultural difference where a right handed canadian or european will likely shoot left but an american will likely shoot right.
@rowanreese5692
@rowanreese5692 11 ай бұрын
The theory is that other sports with a handedness element have more influence on american players to stay with the dominant hand matching their stick handedness. Funny to learn that I should have been a lefty all along.
@Chillin24Seven

I believe it has something to with baseball. Basically Americans are taught to hold a hockey stick the same as a baseball bat and then just slide the bottom hand forward.
@collynbertin3260

A big part of why teams like right handed players on riggt side is positioning. Because the dominant hand is at the top if you a defender and your back skating you have more control along the outside and get an extra inch or two to move their stick, or alot more reach if they need to go one handed. Also along the boards you can pick up the puck and fire it up the boards or accross in one motion, whereas a left handed player playing right would pick it up on their back hand and move it to the right. That one extra movement is the difference between a forward closing the gap and the puck being in safety. Its the samenin the offensive zone, if your right handed and a RD you get that extra little bit of stick reach, and when grabbing the puck off the boards you can immediately pass instead of needing to move it to the back hand. What having a left handed player does let you do better is play the puck behind the net a bit quicker because if your picking up the puck on your forehand and your left handed you'll have the positioning to immediately fire the puck along the boards towards your own goalie. The issue with that is generally if your first back on the puck it will still take your partner d 1 or 2 seconds to be in a good position to receive the behind the net pass. Basically the advantage you get by getting the puck on the forehand is mitigated by needing to wait for the partner d to be in place. If youre picking up the puck on thebforehwand as well your back is more turned away from the incoming opposing team.

I didn’t pick up a hockey stick until I was in college. I’m right handed, shoot right. It just felt more natural. I also played baseball, so I catch left when I’ve played goalie which kinda sucks with the goalie stick but whatever, I adjusted. All my friends I’ve introduced hockey to shoot what they are handedness, so my wife shoots left as a left hander, my friend shoots right as a right hander. I gave them both a different sided stick without telling them anything other than how to hold it, and they said it felt more natural to pick left as a lefty and right as a righty. Idk

Kangaroo story from an Aussie: when I was growing up we used to spend time on my dad's family farm out in the bush. We'd regularly see big buck (male) roos, easily over 6ft tall, bounding across the paddocks and clearing the cattle fences with zero effort. No way would you approach them on foot, and the working dogs knew instinctively to steer clear (the story Steve told about roos drowning dogs in dams is definitely accurate). The mobs of roos would race us along to the roads as we'd drive to town, and could outpace us in farm utes going 60kmph. So much power in those legs! These days, I live in a bigger city, but we still see roos when they move around the outer suburbs through the scrub and nature reserves. They're pretty chill if you see them in a wild life park - totally safe to feed and pat, and they will move off if they don't want to interact - but you wouldn't want to approach them in the wild, for sure.

This podcast hit home... When the guys were talking about how right handed people naturally shoot left in hockey and Adam was freaking out, I had a similar reaction when I learned this. Right handed for everything so my parents got me a right handed stick and learned to play that way. Heard that around 25 yrs old. Now almost 30, and occasionally when warming up in beer league I will flip my stick and play left handed back handed with my right hand at the top. Can't really shoot but just stick handling feels way more natural with the dominant hand at the top. Too late for me now but will definitely be telling my future kids this. Great ep!

I saw this on TikTok and was going to send you a dm re this (the kangaroo story) as an Aussie I laughed. Fwiw majority of what we see here are wallabies in cooler climates which are smaller and non aggressive. A kangaroo I Canada just seems cruel. The big reds in serious hot outback found and 99.99% a non issue but if you re walking through scrub and come across a big bull (male) you better be backtracking. The most common threat is when driving as they are fast, as in 60+kph fast and like a (Canadian analogy as I have lived there) moose you don’t want one coming through the windscreen at speed. Hasn’t happened to me but three mates have t-boned a big roo and vehicle has been a write-off each time. They don’t ‘punch’, they grab you with arms and rear legs will open your torso as Steve described.

Anecdotally, I feel like the 'North American' philosophy in the 80's and 90's was to have your dominant hand be lower on the stick (i.e. righties shoot right) and the 'European' philosophy was to have your dominant hand be on top (i.e. righties shoot left). In the last 25 years, we've shifted to the more skilled philosophy which has led to an abundance of lefthanded shooting players.

regarding righties competing left-handed - Vasyl Lomachenko is the best example of this in boxing. Having your dominant hand forward makes you fight more like a fencer, and at his peak Loma was called "No Mas CHenko" because his footwork was so good his opponents couldn't lang on him and he could just create angles where he ends up standing BESIDE them hitting them with punches they don't see coming. He didn't knock guys out often, he just demoralized them and they'd quit on the stool.

Love the handedness discussion. It just all depends what you’re most comfortable with. I always thought I was weird growing up being someone that writes and throws right handed, but shoot, golf, and bat left handed. But I think other kids were just forced to play right handed cause their parents thought that was the right way. Thank god for my first coach who told my parents to let me play the way I naturally held it.

The reason why it’s hard to find right, handed defenseman is because people who are “goofy” (meaning they have their dominant hand on top) End up having a higher ceiling because they have their dominant hand on the part of the stick that requires the most control. This is why 95% of the population is right handed, but about 50% of the NHL is left handed. They are the goofy right handers who have an advantage over normal right handers.

Does anyone know how the Kings and the Leafs were tied for the most points in the " last 10 games streak " this morning?

Genuinely curious where Jesse got the, "most people play hockey with dominant hand on top". I've played since I was 5, played semi-pro, coached multiple levels. I think it's totally fair to say, whatever feels most comfortable, but the dominant hand lower makes sense for generating power for the shot. Maybe that's an older thought process?

The thing is why are there so many left shot dmen in the league that case when the majority of people are right handed? Many right handed people shoot left tbh

Legitimately would like to know what Steve is talking about with the Leafs not playing that bad and saying the Sens were a muffin factory throwing garbage on net. (via NaturalStatTrick, at 5v5) 1st period - xGF% of 82% and HDCF of 5-1 2nd period - xGF% of 56% and HDCF of 4-3 3rd period - xGF% of 65% and HDCF of 5-3 Game Totals - xGF% of 66% and HDCF of 14-7 All of those favoured the Sens. A win is a win, but saying the shot tracker was deceiving is such a weird take. Sens doubled the Leafs up on high danger chances and won 2/3 of the xG battle.
