I have to say, as a Penguins fan, it is honestly quite cathartic seeing and hearing the open mouthed gasps at what's been happening this season. It defies all logic. Most of Dubas's big moves have paid off: Karlssons been great. Reilly Smiths been great. Committed to Jarry as the starter, he's the best he's been in years. Nedeljkovic as the backup has been good when needed as well. Crosby's line is utterly DOMINANT at 5on5. But the powerplay is an utter ABOMINATION. It's actually the extent that we groan when they get one because not only will they not score, there's a reasonable chance they concede one shorthanded instead. And even if they don't, it kills ALL of the momentum they gathered with their top-class 5on5 play. Receiving a powerplay is a kiss of death for this team. I have never seen anything like it.
@people386511 ай бұрын
If the team was good, PP would cost points, but not the way it is. That D corps is not good defensively. Letang and Karlsson are the same player. Absolutely no point in having both. Wtf is up with Graves? I thought that was Dubas' best signing.
@CloakingDonkey11 ай бұрын
The PP sucks so bad because they're all quite slow. So if Karlsson slips a puck, that's usually a 1 or 2 on 0 because nobody can catch up. Also, I don't know where this is coming from but Jarry has only been good in like the last 10 ish games. He was really awful to start the season. He had 2 shutouts and .901 save% for a long time. Meaning in the non shutout games he was utterly unusable. The biggest issue, just like last year imo is the lack of synergy in the defense and the lack of depth scoring.
@Pens72411 ай бұрын
@@CloakingDonkey It's not just Karlsson missing pucks during the PP. How many times has Geno given it up, and barely tries to catch the guy, yet he refuses to leave the top of the umbrella. People complain about Reirden's PP, but if you have players that don't do as they are told to do, is he really to blame? Geno starts on the half wall, and every time circles out to the top and the other team jump him because he's prone to turnovers.

I think there are a few reasons Perron is likely to get a long suspension. 1) Zub had nothing to do with Larkin and was actively calling for the medical staff. 2) Perron came in with momentum and launched himself into Zub. 3) The play was whistled down, so this wasn’t during an active game situation. 4) Zub has a history of head injuries (missed time with a concussion already this year and broken jaw/another concussion last year).

Just a reminder on the Canucks-Avs back in the day. There was a game where Bettman was in the building for the game in between the Moore elbow on Naslund and Bertuzzi incident on Moore. That game was close and went off without much incident. The Bertuzzi-Moore catastrophe occurred in the 2nd game after the initial Moore elbow on Naslund when the Avs were blowing out the Canucks like 8-1 or something by the 3rd period. This is worth mentioning because there's this odd misunderstanding where people believe you only have to worry about the 'next game' between 2 teams where something dirty happened. I'd argue you have to watch those teams for the whole year until they cool off during the summer.

@larissaborowiec777111 ай бұрын
For the Kane hit- it is at least a boarding and checking from behind. After reading the specific rules, there is a shoulder check yes so that initially "gets rid"" of check from behind as the guy he hit kept his body turned instead of trying to protect himself BUT kane also then makes the hit up high (checking from behind back in) AND he made the hit more dangerous/violent than it needed to be = boarding (i.e. owness was also on him there to control the hit). In a hit, the player needs to shoulder check and protect themself but the hitter also has to control the hit, keep it low, and limit the impact in a potentially dangerous sitch such as that
@francb163411 ай бұрын
on the Perron "tax": I think a big factor is that it's after the play has been blown dead and Zub has completely dropped his guard, he's in medical emergency mode calling the staff over. To me that makes it drastically worse than a similar hit delivered during live play.

This is a couple of days after the podcast, but here are some numbers for the Penguins powerplay: PP opportunities: 74, tied for 2ndd-last in the NHL with the Islanders (fewest is also a tie, Capitals and, LOL, Leafs with 73) PP goals: 7, tied for 2nd-last in the NHL with the Blues (fewest are the Capitals with 6) PP%: 9,46%, 3rd-last in the NHL (only the Blues & Capitals are worse) Opponent PIMs per game: 6,7, fewest in the league Shorthanded goals against: 4, tied for 3rd-most (with quite a few teams, Carolina leads the league with 7) So they don't draw many penalties, they don't score on the powerplay & they give up shorthanded goals at an above-average rate. They got the full trifecta.
@philipdawson780011 ай бұрын
OK, so this doesn't include the Arizona game, where they went 2/5 on the powerplay (so now they're 9 for 79 on the powerplay, they've improved to 11,39% in PP%, which should move them ahead of Chicago & Calgary, who went scoreless on their PPs yesterday). Still, oof...

Dirty players are treated like valued clients of Player Safety. That's the issue. If you're expecting the League to protect you, you're someone with a future on the IR. Players and their teammates have been forced to take self-defence on the ice into their own hands, because of poor officiating and suspension oversight. The problem with knee on knee hits is that it's very instinctive, with the speed of the game, and you'd have to be insane to do it because the guy sticking his leg out is as much at risk as the guy hit. It either happens because someone blows by a slower player who is desperately trying to stop them or the guy being hit jumps out of the way of regular bodycheck and puts themselves into worse peril. They have to suspend players for the ones where guys are sticking their legs out, to try to get it sink into thick heads to try harder to quit doing it, but it's not like swinging a stick at someone's head which should get the book thrown at you.

This Islanders game for Tavares reminds me a lot of our game in Arizona in 21-22. Everyone made this massive deal about how it was Matthews's return home after COVID. And that game was horrible from us, the team tried to feed Auston the entire time and it did not work at all. They did eventually get him a goal, but the game ended up being an embarrassing 1-2 loss against the Coyotes when they were bad. So I'm worried we'll get a repeat of that game.

maybe a less established franchise getting a superstar is a good thing for that franchise? Maybe that'll bring a less established franchise into the big time? The stuff with Ohtani/Jays feels very similar to the Bedard/Hawks stuff. Can you imagine if the Jackets, Ducks, or Sharks would've gotten him? That would have been incredible for them. The Hawks have a long history--they would have been fine without Bedard. In the same vein, the Dodgers having a "storied" history, they would've been fine without Ohtani as well. That all being said, I respect Ohtani's decision. (I would not want to move away from the West Coast if I was in his shoes). He probably wants easier access to transpacific flights.
