SMT NINE is named that way because it has nine different alignments instead of the usual three; using the usual Neutral, Law and Chaos and adding in Neutral, Light and Dark. So you can be Light-Neutral, Dark-Law, Neutral-Neutral etc. So far this is the only SMT game that has a title referring to a gameplay feature, as well as the only MegaTen game for the original Xbox.

I'd highly recomend 3, strange journey, 4, and 5, preferably in that order. These are the best of the best.

Strange Journey, the one you asked about, is one of the best, yes. I feel I should mention it's a first person dungeon crawler though (as were all SMT games before III. Strange Journey came out after III but it's a throwback gameplay-wise) so that may present an entry bar for some, since that genre is pretty rare nowadays. IV is probably the best entry point to the series, or you can just wait for SMTV Vengeance to release (it will include both the original campaign from vanilla V and the new one).

Smt 1,2 and IF..'s PlayStation 1/ gameboy advance remasters are one to one of the original so i cut them to make the video shorter. My apologies for the unclear and lazy description 21:56 Its in hd 4k because I took it from Atlus' youtube channel (and added subtitles). The actual opening is hella compressed since its on the 3ds lol

SMT IF is indeed a what if scenario but it's also the game that directly leads into both the Persona series and the Devil Summoner series. The biggest connection to Persona comes from the female MC Tamaki who appears in Persona 1's Snow Queen route and both Persona 2 games as a minor supporting character. She also works for the Kuzunoha Detective Agency in Persona 2, which the first MC of the Devil Summoner games works for.

3 is still the GOAT! Like how Persona 3 was the age of social links and social stats for Persona. SMT 3 gave us a bunch of great things for the future titles to us. 4, Strange Journey, and 5 ( just play Vengeance since it will have both stories of 5 and run better ) are also so good. I only hope they eventually go back and remaster 1 / 2 since they are a bit rough to go back and play. But still fun.

let's gooooooooooooooo (if you're planning to play, like i said before, 4 is a good way to start (but you'll have to emulate) 3 if you're not and 5 if you're gonna wait for the new version on pc. Also, the one you said if it was good, Strange journey redux, it's really good, but again you need to emulate 3ds or fiind a way to record 3ds with a capture card. ANyways, i'd say 4 is the best starting point, it resembles persona a bit so you won't feel as lost at the begining (it shares sound effects from persona 4 and 3, at least the originals)

Redux is arse I'd suggest playing the original over the re-release that muddled the original game's vision due to nearly all of its new writing being outsourced to people who don't understand the franchise.

@@jhonxiolon No the general consensus is that all the new added stuff ruins difficulty. The protag in SJ already has his own special forms of progression in comparison to all of the demons, so adding more just really doesn't make any sense at all. Not to mention some bosses got nerfed too. There's also stuff like the sub-apps system being neutered so that you don't have a loadout for it anymore, and you can just run around with ALL of them enabled it's ridiculous. Yeah the gameplay is smoother now but for a series that touts all the time about being "hard" it really doesn't leave a good mark for that impression. The UI is also borked quite a bit, meaning it's not as intuitive. As for the new plot the only claim to fame it has is "making law and chaos option on par with neutral" which doesn't make much sense since the base game also had it essentially be like that too given the game's theming and how each of the alignments handled the situation of the earth and humanity going to shite. So really they just removed the "problematic" elements of law and chaos while giving neutral even more problems than it already had. Other than that the new writing can instantly be seen as a downgrade not on par with the original with stuff like Demeter's dialogue and how overall the new stuff just doesn't mesh well with the original game's writing. Also they actively defaced Kaneko's last character artworks he did for the series by having some no-name colorist working under Doi redo the artwork for the human cast. It really does just leave a bad taste in the mouth for a game that was already completely acceptable and great as is.

4 has the best story by far, tied with Strange Journey if you include it with the mainline. 4 isn't nearly as dialogue-heavy as Persona games, but believe me when I say that EVERY line of dialogue in SMT4 is meaningful, and not just full of fluff. It seems like you have some biblical knowledge, which will come in handy when interpreting the symbolism in 4's story, which takes the biblical lore and twists it. Gameplay-wise, 5 is definitely the best, although the crappy story made it less memorable for me compared to 4.

Oh yeah, I should also point out that this series started from a book series. The first ever game was made to be a sequel to the second book but with an entirely different story from the third book which wasn't out at the time. None of these nine books got a game but they do have an anime for the first book. Regardless, the intro spoils major plot points from the first two books.

Shinjuku Babel, dont know what Shinjuku means but Babel was the name of the Tower mankind had made to reach God before he stuck down the tower, made it so there was no longer a common tongue, and scattered humanity. Shin Megami Tensei uses ALOT of Religious stuff. Also Babel is pronounced Ba-Bl.

"Messiah as Jesus" not really. Messiah is more like a role rather than a character. In Persona 3 there's a Persona that is called Messiah but its appearance is that of the protagonist. This is informed on Shin Megami Tensei 4 Apocalypse where the Messiah is the eyes of the "Great Will" (as a reference to this deity. It would be like Ein Sof/The Infinte, a interpretation of the Creator God, not same as Christian God).

As a relative newcomer to SMT that has played most of the MAINLINE games, I’d say SMT3 Nocturne HD Remastered and SMT5 Vengeance (enhanced version of SMT5) are probably going to be the EASIEST to get into.

My favorite SMT game is Apocalypse, the only one that I have finished. I am loving playing through Strange Journey and its a pretty fun game, and I'm on and off with SMT 5/V

Basic of knowledge about SMT series it is about war between God of Law YHWH and Lord of Chaos Lucifer and you can choose side My suggestion 3 is good start but it old and very very hard. 4 too bad you can't play it legitimately because it 3ds exclusive and Nintendo just close 3ds eshop. 5 is fun if you can wait for V Vengeance to come out because the base (canon of creation) is kinda meh hopefully in canon of vengence they will fix the story

I wonder how playing canon of vengeance with no knowledge from canon of creation will feel like though. I'm sure it will be a stand-alone story and all, it's just that it may assume the player already knows stuff about the setting and throw information around in a way that makes it either confusing or just hard to really register for a new player. Kind of like playing Apocalypse without IV and having no idea of who all those factions are. Of course Vengeance will share a beginning with Creation and seems to be similar at least up until Lahmu shows up so it won't be to that extent.

1 and 2 are interesting very dark could get you strike cancelled. There's no legal way to play em. If is on Japanese NSO. 3 is hard. 4 is stuck on 3ds. 4.5 is hard. Strange journey redux is hard. 5 is hard.
