But theres a part i forgot and its the most important part..the early grime artists are responsible for their own success. For the 1st time in black uk music grime was sucessful without the major mainstream music industry. Truly independent. Then the industry made a move to absorb the genre by throwing out mercury awards. So its an excellent e.g of successful entrepreneurialism..and they were black.

I am a Londoner and lived in the US for two years, live in Toronto now. Kano is right it’s better for UK artists not to worry about if Americans will be receptive to their music . I do not think they can. Our slang is different . The bars won’t hit their eardrums they way we want it too and technically they’re in a bubble so no matter what I don’t think it’ll reach. Toronto slang is similar to London that’s why Drake etc flow to Section Boyz , Stormzy and the likes .

Because the these so called interviewers never bother to actually talk about the artist's music. It's the same ol US vs UK comparison topics over and over again with every UK artist they bring in, like they have a superiority complex.

As a old school hip hop head, I grew up on American hip hop and some Uk based hip hop from the likes London posse, Hijack, demon boyz, Hardnoise, Professor Griff, Monie love and slick Rick. Even though America where it all started and was highly influential, especially through the gold era of hip hop the 90s and the noughties. UK hip hop was definelty on evolution of its own sound culturally, which is modern day Grime, I check more uk artists than American hip hop these days cause uk scene is now what American hip hop was 20 years ago it a whole new industry reaching new heights.

Great interview. Big up Kano real legend but just to share with you all there was African enslavement in England and throughout Europe during the slave trade in the 15th Centuries big port townships like Liverpool, Bristol and Southampton even in London during the 18th century had a strong population, stories similar to Black Wall Street in N.Y are found in Europe as well if researched. In Portugal you had populations of thousands of African populations in Lisbon and Evora but its not spoken much about in the schools in Europe and even in the UK. Much blessings to you all and keep the UK and European artists coming through.

Yea this is where Brits start going in straight denial about how their English culture is heavily influenced by so many other cultures. I see so many white Brits say that America stole their culture 🤨 naw y’all stole Africans that ultimately influenced the cultures. It’s a different sound but it all comes from the same place🤷🏽♀️

kano is spot on in this interview regarding the whole slang subject, we (the brits) grew up listening to American rap/tv and learnt the slang through years of listening to it! We didn't understand everything straight away so why would it be so hard to learn slang from the uk! Im a white mid 30 male but can understand American slang London slang Jamaican slang African slang and if you don't understand every word is it that off putting to miss a few words?
@TheLondonRunner2 жыл бұрын
It's a mindset of being open to other cultures; looking outward not inward. It's not that they can't learn, it's that they don't want to.
