I saw Kano out shopping in Selfridges way back in 05 (I think)…. I was a big fan, and went over to say hello. Was thinking he might not want to be disturbed when out shopping etc, and was unsure how he’d react. He couldn’t have been any nicer. Really humble, and didn’t mind being disturbed at all. Gave us a load of his time; chatting about growing up in East London (I’m not far off his age, and grew up in Canning Town), and U.K. hip hop and garage / grime. Always been a big fan of his music, but even more impressed by his acting in Top Boy. Got an abundance of talent Kano, and just seems humble and down to earth all round

The street thing about respect is real. In that typa environment it’s different. If somebody disrespects you to your face and you don’t do anything, automatically that person and everybody else around looks at you like a bitch, then word travels round that you let so and so diss you and you didn’t do anything, then before you know it other ppl start feeling more comfortable disrespecting you because they don’t feel like they’ll be any repercussions, then you just keep goin further and further down the food chain til you put your foot down and do something. I know this shit from experience them typa ppl prey on any typa weakness you show

This ain’t a street thing. This is a life thing. The only reason why some “corporate/office types” people don’t do this is because their safety is not their responsibility but the police. Otherwise, this has always been the case that you need to remain your reputation.

I think the difference is this, Americans look through this in an American lens . The street gang culture in Uk isn’t part of black culture but city culture there’s been street gangs in e.London and s.London way before black immigrants turned up on British shores going all the way the way back to Victorian times these areas were notorious for gangs and poverty when the vast majority of the population was white. Charles Dickens made a career out of writing about the east London rookeries . Unlike America there was no significant white flight from these inner city areas the poorest white families had simply nowhere to fly to . The black immigrants didn’t introduce the gang culture they adopted into it . The American concept of the black hood bears no relation in London because these areas were hoods before black people ever turned up . Glasgow a city with no significant black population has one of the highest murder rates in Europe much of which is gang affiliated. The UK has long tradition of gang violence, hell we invented football hooligans in the UK it’s a local tradition as British as fish n chips
