Best advice I have for your fridge is to get in to the access vent and take a look at the flame when it is burning. It needs to be bright blue and of even height. You may have to remove a cover or guard to get in there and see the flame. Some insects or spiders like to get into the burner and make a web which obstructs fuel flow. Also, fuel flow to the fridge being low can make it difficult to maintain the flame, that would indicate a bigger problem with your gas lines or regulator on the propane tank. However, running down the road and having large quantities of cross winds or air currents along the side of the RV can get in past that outside vent panel and blow out the flame. The fridge will try to restart it, but if the airflow into the fridge cavity is sufficient, it will keep the auto-striker from lighting the flame again and the fridge will go into check mode. It can be a real pain. About all you can do is restart the fridge as soon as you notice that the check light on. Ideally if your fridge is already cold inside and the contents of the fridge are also cold, you can go for a number of hours and not have too much temperature increase. I travel with a number of “blue ice” blocks in my freezer and will place them in the fridge on travel days just to help the fridge out and combat a possible “check” situation while driving that I can’t immediately take care of.

I have a tornado phobia and can completely understand why you would say nope to even taking a chance while living in an RV. I experienced many dust storms when I lived in Arizona. They are cool, amazing and awful at the same time. One hint, if you try to drive through one, it will sand blast the paint off of your vehicle. So always find a place to stop ASAP or don't drive if you can. Stay safe and God bless.

I had been in Kansas only six months when I was in the Lawrence, Kansas tornado in 2019. I was driving a city transit bus. You do NOT want to be in any vehicle regardless of size during a tornado. If near a town park the vehicle and take shelter in a store. If you are on the open road and it is bearing down park your vehicle and find a culvert or depression and cover your head and get flat. Keep carriers available at all times to evacuate your precious 🐱’s.

It's always wise to heed weather warnings - and thank you for showing us a real gem in Quinter, KS. Sorry about the awning but everyone & everything else and everyone is safe - so that's a blessing. As always, it's so good to see your furbabes - Opie and Tara - travel guards (one above, one below) in Freida. If you're headed to Denver on May 20-21st, you'll be headed into a snowstorm. The moisture is badly needed. Still take care & be safe out there with the kiddos. 😊😊😊 Thumbs up as always.

Four big ground screws, two big 4" wide web straps, and a 6' crowbar to snug them down. Anything less than a tornado won't bother your rig. And antichafe for the roof edges. That's how marinas routinely secure boats in hurricane season.

in real windy areas you must put a bungie cord around the "top of each arm" on your awning. Without your awning WILL billow and unwind on the highway then you know the result.

Eric, Hang in there buddy. The flat states can be harsh this time of year. As someone who has replaced an awning and lost two in storms, don't bother replacing it. Save yourself the hassle of worrying about it and get yourself a good clam or other good pop up tent and just use that instead. Put it up when you want it and not have to worry about it whenever there is any little gust of wind. Just be glad you and the kittens are okay. Oh and KOA is alright, it isn't great but just okay. We had something similar happen to us in Montana. We were staying a small State Park and it was a beautiful day, no wind, etc. The park ranger stopped by to see how we were doing and mentioned that we needed to be careful about leaving our awning up. I politely thanked him and he was on his way. I, on the other hand thought I knew better. About 20 minutes later I went inside to get a barely pop when all of a sudden a huge gust of wind came up and ripped the canvas off the frame and over the top of the RV like yours did! I felt so stupid for not heading his advice!

I am on my counties skywarn group as a trained spotter. I literally get in my car and go to the designated place for me to watch and then report via ham radio. You have to be aware and careful but of 100 deployments we might see one or two tornados and if you are paying basic attention you can easily get around them. Anyone can take the skywarn class for free. It is only a couple of hours long and will make you much more comfortable in knowing what to look for and how to avoid getting caught in one. A watch is simply conditions are possible not that it is even likely a tornado will happen. Get a few minutes of radar training and get the radar scope app for your phone along with skywarn training and you will be good to go.

Fuel level issues have always been thing with ford's. My 99 and 01 both had issues with the sending units in the tank. Once replaced problems solved. I've associated it with the vehicle being run at a certain level, or being parked with a certain level for a long period of time.

FYI ~ RVs make poor storm chaser vehicles. 😉 Awnings are nice but I can seldom use mine because I can’t risk it with winds over 12 mph because there’s always higher gusts. I’ve driven through dust storms and I found it’s best just stopping if you can’t find shelter.

You handled it well! Calm and cool is the mood for traveling. This happened to me in Wyoming: 60mph gusts blew my awning off its support and onto my roof. THe entire awning [25ft] was on my roof and I had a tow truck guy cut it from my RV and remove it. I was able to continue but it took 3 hrs delay and fortunately the replacement was under warranty. Lesson learned to stop in high wind conditions, and have a sandwich :)

I can relate to having to talk to yourself in not too pleasant a language! When the "dust" settles and all is safe it is much a relief! Often wonder why rv's even have awnings! Such a pain to use! Have watched the automatic sensor ones and they are horrible too! One 5th wheel I watched had 2 on one side; they would go in and out all day....but had no sense of rhythm. Where I have been; Az., Colorado and Utah the wind is so erratic and wicked I have not really enjoyed having an awning. Glad you and kitties made it thru the debacle ok! Most likely fuel sender, given that the gauge seems to work normal until below 1/2. Easiest way to test it is to find the wire for the gauge from the sender, then cut it and it should go to full. Ground it and it should go to empty. That will prove out the wiring and the gauge leaving the sender as the fault.

You probably need a new fuel module in your gas tank (fuel pump-gas gauge sending unit) they often go bad these days because of the ethanol in the gas that draws moisture and then allows corrosion to happen. but maybe ford is different and uses a separate sending unit for the tank full level? That'd be nice for a change but I'm not completely sure about that.

Always take tornado warnings and watches very seriously, especially in Tornado Alley states. Today (May 19) Gaylord, Michigan, got hammered by a tornado.🔸 What a gem you found in Quintar, Kansas!🔸Sorry about your awning. What a day you had! Wow!

Nomadic Fanatic If you get hemmed up in the middle of a dust storm pull off the road as far as you can and stop until it passes , keep you lights OFF . People might see your tail lights and think you are moving and try to follow you . Pull aside and stay alive . That is on the commercial put out by A-Dot we get really nasty dust storms here in the southern part of Arizona .

You're not taking weather too seriously. Ryan Hall y'all is the BEST. I watch him and the chasers for hours and there's a lot in Kansas lately. Did you see Vince waleti on maybe that night? Lightning hit a tree right near him while he was driving. ⚡⚡⛈️🌪 Get radar Omega. Oh no not Hays. Ouch Sorry you lost your awning but glad you're ok. Tc. 🙏🏻

I owned a '86 Ford Tarus station wagon that displayed the exact same fuel guage problem. It would max out the needle at reaching down to a 1/2 tank and after I filled it up, the guage would read correctly again until just below 1/2 full. I traded it in shoftly after that started to happen.

Have lived in Kansas my whole life. Can't beat the middle of the country location. We just recently were driving through Tallahassee Florida and received a tornado warning (!) on our phone. At least in Kansas you can see the storms coming.

Glad you’re all safe. We always fill our gas tank up when it’s just about to hit half a tank. Doesn’t seem as expensive, except the first initial fill. Maybe that would work to get an accurate reading on your gage. Safe travels 😻😻

Eric, toughen your grit man. You know RV'ing is full of challenges which includes weather, so you know its probably gonna be bad. That awning situation doesn't look even that bad so why cry about it? It's great to see you almost always smile and enjoy things but negative stuff happens and will happen in the future. Great content!

Im in Oklahoma and we are getting a lot of rain, the wind is always crazy here. You never know from 1 hr to the next when hard gust pop up. We have gust to 45mph pretty much every week. It is rainy season here, bummer when the dogs need out. I do not use my awning anywhere that has any kind of wind, Ive had 1 pulled up and over the top of the RV in AZ and it was out not even 1 ft when the hurricane came through in AL and broke the arm. Im having a heck of a time finding one for my Rexhall Airbus.

Try using "Tank Straps" brand straps for the bike. KZbin channel "Bikes and Beards" sells them as well as other websites. They are the same straps Honda and Harley use to ship bikes. They hold tight and don't loosen up!

FYI full pump/sending unit just make sure you get the right one. Now days these auto store have no clue on parts. I change out 2 pump/ sending unit before I just went to ford to get the right one. My first one read backwards second one didn't the exact. The ford part guy said there 3 different one for my e350 chassis. He need the vin number to get the right one.

The problem with the fridge on gas is most likely your exhaust outlet needs a baffle mounted inside. Lazy Daze E450’s have this same problem. There is a vortex created when you are driving and it puts out the pilot light without the baffle. Talk to any good Dometic repair place as they should know about the baffle.

Whoo boy. I did that Western drive through Missouri and Kansas about a year ago. Winds so high, passed a Class-A completely flipped on its side in the medium ,with a guy standing with his head sticking out of the side door. Across the highway, was a Class-C - I think they'd bumped into eachother due to the wind. Cops just arriving to the scene as I drove by, thanking the good Lord I'd been delayed for 20 minutes back at the gas station.
