"Carry On Wayward Son" retells the Myth of Icarus. Icarus was the son of the master craftsman Daedalus, the architect of the labyrinth of Crete. King Minos refused to let Daedalus leave the island of Crete after the labyrinth was completed because he knew its secrets. Daedalus plotted his escape by crafting wings that would allow him and Icarus to escape captivity under King Minos by flying across the ocean to their freedom. But during their escape Icarus was having so much fun flying around with his new wings that he flew too high, where the heat of the sun melted the wax that held them together and he fell into the ocean and drowned. The ups and down and starts and stops of the instrumentals reflect the path Icarus flew while he was having fun before he lost his wings. His demise informs the touch of sadness, and the sighs, in the vocal stylings in the song.

I firmly believe the era of the largest amount of genuinely great music was roughly from the mid-sixties to the mid-eighties. Of course there is great music in all eras but the consistency, I think, was highest around those times. DayOne, it's great to see people not of that era enjoying so much of it. Music really is a treasure, I hope that remains true forever. Music says things words can't.

Some great classic rock here. From the album "Leftoverture" which is a masterpiece. My older brother used to put on headphones, and sing along. He was terrible, but he introduced me to great music like this. 6:50: Angela, the lyric is "there'll be peace when you are done" which to me symbolize there will be peace at the end of out lives when the worldly cares are over.

This comment is for those who experienced 80's radio. I like this song but they played this song so much that at one point I had to change the station or turn off the radio because I was over it. Listening to it now I can bear it but it brings back the memory of radio overplaying songs like this one. I don't know if the newest generation has a similar experience since they choose what they listen to. We depended on disc jockeys especially if we were waiting on a new song to drop.

This is a great song and the one I played most when I'd pull out the LP; I still have the LP I bought back in 1976 (yes I was around then). As you mentioned, the harmonies are killer, and I think the lead vocal is Steve Walsh (keyboards); the song was written by Kerry Livgren, one of the guitarists. "Miracles out of Nowhere" is another song I enjoy on that same LP ("Leftoverture"). On an unrelated note, I think you might enjoy "Space Trucking" by Deep Purple, off their "Machine Head' LP.

This song makes me sad, because, it ran during the ending credits of the 1977 movie “Hero’s”, but only in the theaters. I had taken my girlfriend to watch the movie, and in one scene we saw and commented on seeing the last name of a friend. At about the same time we saw his name, that friend accidentally but tragically shot and killed his girlfriend at a house party. 47 years have passed and that is the memory flashback this song gives me every time I hear it. Carry On. RIP D.B.

Hi Angela Kansas - yeah, I remember it. Excellent band, good choice. With greatest respect to K fans, can I be permitted a cheeky, unrelated, request here? Whitney Houston inherited that glorious voice of hers from her equally talented mum Cissy, who died only last week aged 90. Buried deep in Cissy;s 1970 debut album is an amazing track called "Any Guy". If you could play it for "Ladies Night" I reckon that before the end you and your caring heart will have got through as many tissues as you did over "Somewhere". Love your format (few pauses and almost no talkover - others should learn!)
