Here you'll see Matt Flacche playing the drums to "Carry on Wayward Son" by Kansas. The video was shot in full-HD (1080p), while the audio was taken directly from the mixing console. In this video, Matt combined a mix of mirroring drum parts along with some fresh original parts to breath new life into the 1976 classic.

Thanks Nick... I'm not trying to play harder or louder... but I'm glad you like the sound I'm getting. I learned in school not to present work in the first person, like "I recorded this" or "I mixed that". It's just how I learned to write I guess :)

I didn't know wearing drumming gloves had any connection to the complexity of music. But this wasn't an easy song to cover... it's not like it was an AC-DC tune :)

Thanks Andy! Journey songs are not as easy to learn as some people might initially think. Even though Steve Smith laid back (of course), he still imprinted some interesting patterns and fills to make it difficult to reproduce.

The last couple videos I've played with gloves because I planned cymbal chokes during the tune. I was hoping the gloves would prevent the cymbals from getting dirty... that plan is not really working out, because the gloves get soaked in sweat. I have noticed that the gloves make it a little more comfortable to play with oak drumsticks. The oak sticks are extremely dense and unforgiving, and can make your hands fatigued. The gloves seem to help with that. I can play with or without them.

Great job - not an easy song to play. I have a hard time keeping up with tuning 1 up - 2 down. Couldn’t imagine that many toms and they sounded great.

Matt I've had the same issue with sticks. I just found the Zildjian Dip series Select Hickory stick. I use the 5A black nylon tip. This doesn't help with leaving marks during cymbal chokes but helps me with grip fatigue.
@flacche
@flacche 9 жыл бұрын
D Knight Hey D. Lately, I don't have much of an issue with grip fatigue. I'm looking for sticks that flake less. The Oak is nice and solid, and doesn't flake as easily as the hickory. I don't wear the gloves much anymore. If I need to do a cymbal choke, I will probably just pick one cymbal to do them on, and clean it later... ha ha!

Excellent! I"m not a fan of using gloves, like you've mentioned below they can get soaked... I bought an used crash for that :) Your sounds are getting better and better man, and I like seeing you whacking the gear more as well, that's when the drums and cymbals really sing! Very well played indeed. Off topic, but why you always refer to yourself in the third person Matt? Creditor in Commerce?

No. That was an old video. On the Tom Sawyer video, I played a Pearl Masters Premium Maple kit. It was the nicest set of Pearl drums I ever owned.

Ok. I was just wondering. You said you are getting a Tama kit next time ? I'm fixing to buy a nice kit and I'm wanting the DW 7 piece or the Gretsch 7 piece and just curious at why you are going with Tama. I know they are great drums but there are others that are great too. I've actually looked at some Tama's here at home but I haven't really made up my mind and I'm getting different opinions on different kits and that's why I'm asking. Thanks for answering though because not everyone will take the time to respond. Thanks.
@flacche
@flacche 6 жыл бұрын
DW and Gretsch both make nice drums. I considered them both before I went back "home" to Tama. I chose Tama for several reasons. Firstly, I like the Starclassic lugs and tom mounts SO MUCH MORE than the DW and Gretsch versions. Secondly, I really like the sound of Bubinga, which Tama specializes in, but not DW, Gretsch, or Pearl for that matter. I eliminated Gretsch from the running because they simply didn't offer and finishes or customizations that appealed to me. On the other hand, DW will do all sorts of customizations, but the final price will be close to twice what I paid for the Tama kit. The Tama kit, made in Japan, are really nice quality instruments.

It was a Pearl Sensitone Elite Aluminum snare, 5x14, with Superhoops. It is pictured in the first few seconds of the video. The drums were really nice, but I don't miss them. When I get a new kit, it will be even nicer than all the kits I had in the past ;)

How?
@flacche
@flacche 7 жыл бұрын
Because I know how to pick'em... and drum companies keep improving their shells and hardware every year. My next kit will either be a DW, Tama, Ludwig, or Gretsch... and they are all making awesome shells and hardware. The Ludwig Atlas hardware is unbelievable!
@dcaudio1
@dcaudio1 7 жыл бұрын
Well you certainly have good taste and apparently a healthy budget. All of those companies make great products indeed. I have been playing Pearl’s so long it would feel weird playing another brand...not to mention the hardware change required. I like the yamaha brand as well. I really like the customization ability Pearl offers, but there must be a reason DW drums are endorsed by everybody. Good luck to you...
@flacche
@flacche 7 жыл бұрын
You should give it a try. I used to be brand-loyal to Pearl, and they have excellent customer service, but after a number of botched orders, and quality control issues, Pearl drove me away as a customer. It is liberating not feeling bound to one brand, and you will be surprised in the quality and features you discover after taking off the blinders!
