@rocknroller1999 Jonathan Price was complying, was a Blue Lives Matter supporter and tried to introduce himself to the officer before he was shot dead. Ryan Whitaker was trying to put his gun on the ground and was shot from behind from less than a foot. Shot less than 5 seconds after opening his door in the middle of the night. They played “Simon Says” and gave conflicting and confusing orders to a Daniel Shaver before shot him. How about Justine Damond? Botham Jean? Tony Timpa?

@rocknroller1999 people comply all the time but get beat because they don’t do it fast enough or the cop just wants to assert his dominance. George Robinson, 62 was beat to death because he didn’t get out of the car fast enough due to complications from a past stroke. The three officers involved slammed him head first and hit and kicked him in the head and chest. While under investigation, 2 were allowed to leave and be rehired and the other one remained employed. After a year and a half of walking around and serving with a firearm for another police department, the 3 officers have finally been charged in Robinson’s death.

@@jacobs3671 but all it takes is one bad cop in a police department to have people lose trust in the whole department. @artiecon97

@@jacobs3671 one example of a department I have no trust in is Aurora PD in Colorado. Officer Nathan Meier was found in uniform, with a firearm, passed out drunk behind the wheel of his patrol car. The responding officers did such a bad job securing the scene and processing evidence that the DA said he couldn’t press charges. Aurora PD never fired Meier and he is still on the force today. Now any other job, if you are found passed out behind the wheel of a company vehicle you will get fired. In the most clear cut case for firing, Aurora PD wouldn’t do it and they also proved they cannot be trusted to investigate themselves. This handling of this one incident shows me that Aurora PD cannot hold themselves accountable and not be trusted.

The main reason that the City of Kansas City Missouri doesn't have control over their own police department is that this city government is both corrupt and incompetent, and is and always has been, and that has caused significant problems in the past when the city had control of the police department. The City of Kansas City Missouri does six things extremely well. 1) Steaks 2) BBQ 3) Feeding the poor and homeless when the Health Dept isn't pouring bleach on the food. 4) Issuing parking citations 5) Discouraging new and existing businesses 6) Corruption, mainly through new construction, especially concerning items that aren't necessary and don't benefit the majority of people living in the city.

Police training should absolutely include psychology classes! Dude was like, "There are two kinds of people in the world: bad people and good people." No! No, there aren't. Humans are freaking complicated, and this kind of simplistic thinking is one of the main problems in policing. Another is a serious lack of self reflection (supported by regular assessment by experts, such as psychologists). A person in such a high pressure job, especially working with the public, should continually evaluate their own motivations, personal growth, and mental health, in addition to their professional development.

It's slightly heartening to hear that there is some psychology included in some police training. Definitely. Because there should be. But it's obvious that, nationwide, police training does not include training to relate to the people involved in each encounter that it generally should. The standard focus on control of, and authority over, the subject at hand, over the needs of the subject or situation, is inadequate at best.

Police Academies do offer some form of psychology classes but they're very minimal and very basic, and of course we don't know what exactly is being taught in those classes. And yes all officers should have the opportunity to see a psychologist / therapist. Being an officer really takes a toll on a person. And of course if there is unresolved anger or frustration, it may lead the officer to make wrong decisions in their next shift.

Real world situational training should be based off how people actually would react when the police is there. Some countries don't allow their police to have guns and they seem to do a better job. If they only train for violent crimes then they're going to always assume that a certain part of the public is violent. Take some of the budget so they can investigate white-collar crimes which takes more money disproportionately from the city which actually increases crime.

Hurray to more thoughtful and verbose comments! Indeed, the only way I see out of police accidentally killing people is less gun ownership. The more people own guns, the more the police will justify with "I thought he had a gun". 2nd amendment, as far as I understand, only pertains to organized militia, not individual ownership. This breaks my heart, it truly does. We are skipping a large part in this story. It was barely touched on. ** The girlfriend called 911- said he had a gun- and forced his way into the house ** Now women, put yourself in that position. If he was armed, she did the right thing. If he wasn't and NONE of the events happened PRIOR to the police being called, then the lady is in the wrong AS WELL AS the police officer who anticipated the armed suspect she proclaimed he was. See our flaw here? Lets fix this.

To this title, I don’t know that we will ever reach a point where black people or white people aren’t being killed by police. It’s part of the nature of the job that when enforcing the law there will be criminal elements that resist and at times force will be required. That force may result in death. Even in cases where the people aren’t engaged in criminal behavior there is the problem that humans feel fear and that affects their perceptions, often in ways that seem baffling in hindsight. Humans are often terrible at interacting with each other, even outside of law enforcement interactions. That said, the US is a country with a deep seated history of racism and law enforcement factors in to that racism. There must be an effort to both eliminate the racist element and train better police. I don’t believe defunding the police is the best way to accomplish that. If anything we need to spend more money on training (I do understand that money can be moved from military equipment to better training). I would also argue that we as a society have come to turn to the police for all sorts of purposes that we ourselves don’t want to deal with, including mental illness and poverty. We all share some of the blame.

Austin Callahan the majority of violent crime goes unsolved by police, and if we defund our overfunded police we can redirect those funds into other programs like mental health responders and medical professionals and programs that actually lower crime rates like public housing, community gardens that feed communities, and others. Thing is the police actually need more funding. Police aren’t paid enough, making it an unviable occupation for educated people. Also, with less funding comes less training, which could lead to more incidents like we are currently seeing. More expensive and advanced technology could also help the police department and communities hold officers accountable. The police don’t need to be defunded, they merrily need better funding management.

I'm certainly jot trying to defend every situation but it can be hard to tell if someone is carrying a concealed weapon. When in a possibly life threatening situation adrenaline can cloud your judgement and something as innocent as moving your hands can be perceived as reaching for a weapon. As for tasers, some people are more resistant than others and could resist the effects long enough to be able to take a shot.

Those training videos are bizarre. Almost all of them are people with weapons and who actually use it. But we see in real world, police are killing mostly unarmed (black) people. In other words, the training videos are making the officers fear even *more* situations than what would be otherwise warranted. Who does this help?

Again, nothing seems to be racially motivated...maybe poor police work. Using the excuse of "I was afraid of the police" is a bit too convenient for people who break the law or run from the police or resist arrest. When you routinely are fearful of your life because citizens/criminals have pulled guns out on you and your fellow officers, ANYONE would be quick to draw or use excessive force. Officers put their lives on the line for the neighborhoods they patrol, white, black or otherwise. If they were racists, then they wouldn't bother. That doesn't excuse poor policing and if they are guity then they should feel the full force of the law.

We're talking about a family man with two small kids in the back seats. There was no excuse for the gun. He was stepping out of car nothing else. But then the cops saw was me and my brother in the back seat and put their guns away. There was no reason for them to pull that gun. They could've easily shot him there and then..

It's not only illegal weapons if found in your possession the police kill you for, but the legal ones too. Philando Castille was killed after he told the officer that he had a weapon and also that it was licenced. But the usual excuse is: I feared for my life so I had to kill him before he killed me. This video clearly shows the extent of brutality they use when arresting persons which is seldom necessary; obviously if a person fights back well that's a different story but you see them slam people in the ground like they were sand bags; it seems to be a blood-lust of these cops to seriously injure or kill and to do it legally knowing full well their fellow officers and union are going to be backing them to the hilt.

This is a great point! I listened to a Kevin Gates interview & he said the problem with young black men is they don't know how to take orders from another man. At home, they were probably raised by women which is very different. We teach young men how to respond to other men, especially those of authority who have an advantage over them, it could be better situations. It all starts at home! We need more good men to teach these young men! A mother can not teach a man his place in the world because she doesn't know it!

"It's shoot to kill." It's not. I don't know of law enforcement officers that use that expression these days. The phrase is, "shoot to stop the threat." You aim at what is the center of mass available to you at the time and the most likely area to quickly cease that person's ability to harm you and others. That's generally the upper thoracic cavity assuming that person isn't behind cover. Shooting to wound is not a thing. It can prolong an already deadly encounter and shooting at the extremities is a harder target to hit, increasing the chances of a missed shot and that shot may strike someone else.

Wtf are you talking about? Even if we defunded the police, they would still have more than enough money to properly train the police. The problem is that they have all this money and they’re purposely not training them right. That’s a decision and a culture. Furthermore, think about all of the other institutions that have been defunded that could use the money like education. We don’t have enough money in public schools to buy new textbooks half the time. I feel that you’re just talking to talk

@@DareBear1226 i dont think the police look at the training regime they can put in place and go "nah we dont need that", here's a good thought, if you took away 10% of Americas GDP from funding going into the military and put that into education instead of defunding police when the money goes on new equipment, armoured vehicles and specialised gear, you could use that 10% (which is 100s of millions of dollars) and put that into education funding.
