This outing came together rather quickly, last week when everyone in my family up here in KC said they were going down to Joplin this past weekend, mostly for deer hunting, I decided I'd go down and do a bit of my own hunting... for trains.
Back in June I was down in Joplin and filmed a couple trains in Asbury, MO which is a very small town of 207 people, that is about a half hour drive North, and slightly West of Joplin. It's almost on the Missouri-Kansas border. Asbury is where my dad's side of the family is from, and is where Dad came to be such a big fan of the KCS as their north-south mainline, the Heavener Sub, goes through town... and these trains fly.
It wasn't until my trip in June to this area that I realized just how close my aunt and uncle's farm was to the main in Asbury, about a 5 - 7 minute drive. The farm is where the deer hunting took place, they have a lot of wooded property and deer are plentiful, but again, I'm not a hunter, not anymore anyway, so this was prime opportunity to hunt some trains.
I was out from about 1pm till around 5:30pm when it got too dark to film. I'd have gone out sooner, but, I slept in much later than I had planned, and no doubt missed some action. But, what I did get was some pretty good stuff.
The first train I had to chase down, as I was driving to the spot, a UP/KCS loaded coal train flew by going the opposite direction. So I found the first decent place to turn around and managed to get far enough ahead of it to film it... barely. Trains here are doing a good 50 - 55 mph.
The location I ended up at is one grade crossing south of the crossing where I filmed the two trains back in June. You can see the green roof of the farm house in the distance as train #3 is approaching. It was the same house that had the gruesome severed catfish heads mounted on the fence posts.
