And yes, once again I marvel at what it must’ve taken to construct all of that. When you’re flying and it’s snowing it just looks magical., like being inside a snow globe. Love watching this on a hot summer day. Winter here is snowy and cold, so summer temperatures are sometimes more than 100 degrees above the coldest winter nights. I recall a train coming south from Butte, Montana in February with the forward horns crammed with snow. When they blew for the crossing that I was at, the horns sounded so weird.

The Oregon Cascades and northern California have beautiful scenery, even more so when snow covered. I've ridden over this route a couple of times on the Coast Starlight. Your drone footage shows off the country much better than you can see from the train. Your views of Klamath Lake are especially beautiful. Imagine what the pioneers must have faced crossing through this area in wagons. One of my ancestors did and settled near Portland. I marvel how the Central Pacific built a railroad over Cascade summit. Those were very tough and determined men. Your video shows some of what they conquered and the difficulties railroaders still face running trains on these steep grades in winter. Well done. That must have been tough flying in that snow; it looked very cold.
@TheRailfanDan6 ай бұрын
Thank you Paul and I agree I have ridden this a number of times on the Starlight and you do miss out on a lot with the side view out of the train. I love flying in the Klamath Lake area. Quite a feat indeed to build this route through the mountain section. It was pretty cold a couple of those days but worth it in my mind!

The whole video is amazing, but the first sequence in the snow laden trees at Pengra Pass is just jaw dropping. Speaking of, when you're driving south on US97, after you crest the little pass over tunnel 17, the view of Shasta as you come into Dorris is just magnificent. I envy the Amtrak passengers passing through that winter wonderland. Perhaps a southbound trip on the Starlight at a future date is in order. It's the only western Amtrak train I haven't traveled on.
@TheRailfanDan6 ай бұрын
Thanks so much! What you want is a Northbound trip on the Starlight in the late Spring, Summer, or early Fall to get great views of Mt Shasta. The Southbound trip through there is always under the cover of darkness.
@J3scribe6 ай бұрын
@@TheRailfanDan I was talking about the drive down from Klamath Falls, but yeah. Northbound or southbound [on Amtrak], Shasta is usually passed in the dark. I think most railfans would travel at 25mph in the dark to wake up to Shasta in the morning light in either direction. It's stupendous!

Thanks Tony this was a fun one! Snow action is some of my favorite even though I despise the cold! The motors on these drones are completely waterproof so there is no issue of flying in the snow. Yes I have lost several drones over the years both from my own fault and from random unexplainable acts.

So I watched most of this last weekend at my friend's house and am now just getting around to finishing it a week later lol. There are so many areas along the line that I love going to on the hill, but perhaps my favorite 'go-to' is at tunnel seven. It's there that I can hike along the side of the tunnel and check out some of the cool things that the SP did to the tunnel, along with other cool features, back on the day. Like, did you know that there's a tunnel access portal sticking out the side of the mountain? Also, the trail gives access to the small rock shed, trestle, and tunnel eight. That's the location of a derailment back in the 1960's (?), dropping at least one boxcar down the steep ravine that is till there to this day.
@TheRailfanDan6 ай бұрын
Thanks Mike! Yes I know about that trail around 7 but have yet to check it out myself. I'll have to finally do that once the snow is melted.

Well done, some very beautiful footage. I wonder if it's possible to get loco sound from the drone, or you just hear the drone motor buzzing? I'm glad you got some ground scenes with sound, they were nice. My only suggestion: the music is a little Hollywood pretentious; a bit simpler music would be nice. Anyway, thanks.

They don't even give the drones the ability to record audio because yes indeed it would just sound like an angry bees nest!

Actually you would be surprised how well drones do in the snow. It's much different than flying in the rain. Several times when it was very blizzard like I was shocked to see how dry it was when I retrieved it. I think the propellers help to just whip the snow away entirely.

Snowy landscapes are indeed the best and the nicest. Especially from the air, where we can see a lot of the surroundings too. The snowfalls at the start are really lovely. The trains are cool here, as they snake around the mountains. I'd like to ask something. Does the exhaust smoke bothers the drone when you fly close to the locomotives? Fantastic video again Dan. I really enjoyed my beloved UP engines. And of course the pumpkins too.
