This song ain't depressing, it's liberating. It reminds us, our impermanence isn't a curse, it's a call to live every moment like a precious jewel, sparkling in the sunlight before it fades.

Yes. I was diagnosed with cancer three years ago. I’m okay now. It changed me. I gave up what I was. Stuck and lonely. Lost. Now, I surrender. We are all on borrowed time. Every hug, kiss, day and night, make them count. A freedom that I never understood before. The clearing at the end of the path comes to us all and the Dark Goddess will take your hand. Go well and blessed be. ❤

This song reminds me of how short life is, I'm 75 now and still working as a master craftsman, restoring old buildings. I'm using tools that I have had for 60 years and some tools that my father gave me which are over 100 years old. The tools look like they were made yesterday, I look like I was made 75 years ago. This alone brings home to me my own mortality and how fleeting everything is. I still have a metal milk saucepan that wife and I won at a raffle, it is still new looking after 50 years of use. My wife has now gone to beyond the sunset, and I am still here with all the memories. Take time to smell the roses everybody before that kind old nurse called death rocks us all to sleep.

Sitting here crying. Can't help it. I bought this album for my son in early 1978 I believe . He was 12 and he really liked Kansas and Boston at the time. A great kid who grew up with a real appreciation of classic rock . I absolutely loved being his father and watching him grow into a man. He and I became the very best of friends when he got older . I have personally never seen a father and son as close as we were. We worked together for 15 years and never had one argument . Pancreatic cancer stole my son from me and my life is not and never will be the same for me . I miss him so . Sleep well my son you are always in my heart and in my mind also .

it's really the best song ever, if you include both music and lyrics. In contrast other songs like Bohemian Rhapsody, Smoke on the water, Billy Jean, We Will Rock you or Stairway to Heaven are musically great but their lyrics are a bit silly, and not as great as those here. My runner up after Dust in the Wind is Imagine from Lennon.

Not many realize this song is a paraphrase of a passage in the book Ecclesiastes in the bible. I played guitar and sang this at my dad's memorial service a month ago and barely got through it without breaking down. He was a great example of someone from the 'Greatest Generation' from WWII. He didn't preach at us kids, he lead by example. My very favorite memory of him happened when I was nine years old. All six of us were eating supper in a cramped corner of a hovel of a kitchen, and us four kids were laughing and cutting up with dad. Mom got frustrated and asked why we couldn't have a nice quiet supper. Dad told her "I'd rather hear them laughing than crying." I greatly miss our conversations while sipping a cup of coffee with you dad.

This song could be a poem, and it still would be beautiful. When I was a junior in high school we were asked to name and explain our favorite song. This was my favorite song. I wrote out the lyrics and read them to the rest of the class. A classmate asked why I would like such a sad song. I said, "it's not sad, it's real." My father was undergoing chemotherapy for bladder cancer at the time. He had already had surgery. Most of that school year, and a little into my senior year I didn't say much of anything to anyone. I was too busy praying, all of my waking hours, for my father to live. He survived that cancer, and also later survived lung cancer due to cigarettes'. He quit the cigarettes''. It's a blessing to me, and the rest of the family that he's still alive and with us to this day. I took comfort in this song, and still do. Be thankful for the people you have in your life. Material things come and go, as do people. But, as I've learned, people are so much more important.

I saw Kansas last night. To be honest, I took one for the team, as I didn’t know many of their songs. After I saw their concert I had so much appreciation for the group! The band itself is so on point and the violinist is fricken amazing! And the fact there is one man who is an original band member is fabulous! Yet,all the guys are so on point musically, it’s crazy! And their talent individually and collectively as a group is beautiful! They gave a little background on this song. One of the original band members was writing this song when his wife heard it, she stated that’s a really beautiful song, you should play it. And that’s how it came about.

My mother spoke no English AT ALL when she first heard this song but immediately fell in love. She showcased this song to my brother and I when we were 7&5 and had us write the lyrics down and memorize the song. She was the most humble woman I have ever come across to this day, she passed away 2 years ago, I listen to this song in memory of her. Beautiful piece.

I was an impressionable 9 years young when this song hit the airwaves. I would play it on the juke box at Shakey's Pizza every time, over and over. I was such a sensitive loner at that age and this song was so beautiful. My parents must've worried terribly that I would turn into a depressive hermit when I grew up. If anything, this song taught me something that any child who's first dog just passed away learns quickly, that we are all just passing through on our way to the next station, and the only thing we own, truly own without any debt, is our soul. Thanks for this amazing song Kansas.

I remember hearing this song as a child growing up in the 1970’s. I used to ask my Mom what is the meaning of this song. She told me that it is true that our bodies turn to dust, but our souls continue on forever. Now that I am 55, most of my family have passed away. I long to talk with them once more. The past is so close I can taste it sometimes, and yet so far away it shocks me. The only comfort I have is one day I will join them all. It’s true that all the earthly castles we build will someday turn to dust and be mostly forgotten by the young that remain. I guess it has always been that way, so this song remains profound as it speaks the truth.

This is my favorite song of all time. I have asked my son that when I leave this lonely planet, this is the song I want played at whatever ceremony (if any...it would be very private, as I am), defines my leaving. This song encompasses everything I feel about life, and perhaps the futility of our existence. Can we change anything? and then, again, do we want to? We are, after all, dust in the interminable cycle of time. Just a speck in the universe. Guess I'm in a contemplative mood. But that is how I feel.

He was blessed to have you and for you to be able to play this for him. He is in a better place. Kansas is epic I was able to see them in 2016. Only a couple original members left.

Lost my father 12 years ago on this day and this song reminds me of Him and his absence in my life. It feels like it was yesterday my phone rang and my mother told Me he is gone. I was just 20 years old and we had so much more to share with one another. He didn’t get the chance to see the person that I will turn out to be. I am currently pregnant with my first child and he won’t be able to meet her. I hope he is somewhere better and can feel my thoughts of him and how much I miss him everyday 🖤

In the 1970's at 16 i sat for several hours several days in a row with nothing but time on my hands and learned to play it on guitar note for note. It was a frustrating enlightening rewarding experience

Even as a 13 year old I realized the sheer poetic power of this song...45 years ago when it was first released. I don't think any less of the artist if this is one of his best remembered songs. When a song touches your heart, you'll always remember that particular song.😊

My sister would play this song when we were teens. I didn't like it much then because it was dreary. It's still pretty solemn but I appreciate how much better the music is than the fluff you hear nowadays.

A beautiful song that reminds me that life on earth is temporal. From dust we were created and to dust we return.

What's the point of it all? We make memories, if we're lucky, then they're all gone when we go. It seems like an utterly pointless thing

@@SamuelBlack84there is an afterlife. If you don't accept Jesus Christ as your savior there is a hell waiting for us. Everything we do here counts as nothing. Admit you are a sinner and in need of Jesus Christ he has already paid the price for our soul to make heaven

The memories, it brings me to tears. I wish I could go back 25 years ago- I would change so much I did so I could be the person I now know I should had been all along . Because I wasn't, life has been hard and sad for all of us. And now it's al.ost over.
