Lived in Horton, by Kennekuck many years and White Cloud for a time on the Reservation. Know all of those places from fishing and hunting all around that area. Miss it.

The trip from Atchison north to the Nebraska border along Kansas Highway 7 goes past White Cloud. I always enjoy going that way. I used to go through Kennekuk traveling from my grandather's house to his farm. A family that lived there had peacocks, which is something I remember. Great video that brings back memories.

Some years ago, I stayed at a BnB not far, at a farm, and the host was involved with the historic aspect of White Cloud. He took me into that brick, squarish building you briefly show at 8:30 on this video. I was able to get inside and look around a bit. Great spot. One bit of trivia, this town was featured in my favorite movie Paper Moon.

The thing I noticed about Kansas is you can be in the middle of a ghost town and the freeways or highways that lead you there are well maintained and i don't see potholes not like here in California. One reason why I moved to Kansas. Love the Prairies, the best sunset ive seen. Loved loved loved every vlogs on Kansas. Thank you!

It might be because they aren’t traveled as much, but I agree about the roads. And the sunsets! I’m from Ohio and the sunsets here are always among the best. Thanks for watching! Appreciate it!

You do a great job with these videos but I could have helped you with a ton of great history on the town of White Cloud. My great-grandfather's family owned a couple of hundred acres just around the corner and north of Main Street. It was a booming town in the late 1800s and the site of one of the largest flea markets in the US for many years.
@TravelwithaWiseguy2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yeah I had heard about the big flea market, and probably should’ve mentioned it. This was one of my early videos and was still trying to figure out the format. I basically wanted to give people a little bit of info about the town and show more of it (and less of me haha).

Thanks for creating this. My uncle says, my great grandparents ran a general store in Arrington. My uncle seems to think the thumbnail photo was the general store in Arrington. My great grandmother was the post mistress. Can you confirm if the general store is still standing in Arrington?
@TravelwithaWiseguy3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching! The thumbnail is actually from White Cloud, not Arrington. I don't remember seeing any kind of general store in Arrington. There was a very rough looking building on the main road I was standing in front of on the video and across the street was a residence that could have been a gas station previously. Other than that I think there were only houses remaining. I enjoyed exploring it!

My family settled just west of White Cloud. Lots of interesting history there pertaining to the westward expansion of the country. It has a few claims to fame, one the inventor of the piggy bank was from White Cloud, a Wilbur Chapman and there is a National Historic Monument commemorating it. When I was a kid, one of the hottest stars in Hollywood at the time, Ryan O'Neal, shot of few scenes in White Cloud, for a movie he was in "Paper Moon". White Cloud was chosen in the early 1970's as a town that clearly looked like a "Depression Type" town. There was also a scene shot in nearby Highland just south of Iowa Point. The town was a major supplier of timber from the Missouri bottoms in the mid 1860's. Thank you for taking a moment to visit my home town. Thought I'd share this youtube video that shows one of those scenes. Anything look familiar? kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3yUeZ94h7J6rc0

Exposing my dark humor here...at 3:52 in the video, since you are a history buff, I think you should make a T-shirt of that advertisement where the last line says "Orphan's preferred" I honestly believe that would be good seller. I'd buy it for my daughter's father-in-law, he's a history buff.

@@TravelwithaWiseguy I love small towns. They always have the coolest stuff to me. You can keep places like NYC, Miami, LA, I'd rather spend my times exploring the uniqueness of places like Wamego. If I had one bit of small criticism, it's the use of ghost town. I think of ghost towns as places completely abandoned, all that is left is the remains, only ghosts living there. I wouldn't call White Cloud a ghost town for sure. But otherwise I appreciate seeing some of these places. I look forward to seeing more
