I saw Kansas a few times in the 70's, but my favorite show was sometime around '75 or '76 when they played "Incomudro - Hymn to the Atman". It was the only time I ever heard that song live and it was fantastic!

I saw Kansas for the first time in this around this time. They were the opening act for bad company. They came out played 30-40 minutes went off stage in the crowd went berserk screaming for an encore. Instead the equipment was broken down and bad company took the stage about 30 minutes later. The audience continue to call for Kansas through the entire set bad company played. The band was noticeably annoyed and I think about a week later threw Kansas the tour. I stopped being much of a bad company fan after that, all I could think of is these guys couldn't let the opening act do an encore. They weren't pressed for time it wasn't one of those things where we had to be out of the building at a certain hour I've been in other concerts at that venue that went on till past midnight. Kansas blew up nationally not long after that with the string of really great hits and I love them to this day

Rush had a very similar experience with Marillion in 1983; the power energy and incredible musicianship of the band left the crowd in a frenzy; Rush DID let them do encores, though.

Per interviews of with them, plus the documentary Miracles Out Of Nowhere, this was common with Kansas in those days. The story they tell of how angry Steven Tyler of Aerosmith got after they blew the crowd away as their opening act is priceless.
@AldousHuxleysCat4 ай бұрын
@@DavidGainesVeganComposer that's very interesting. I wonder if Aerosmith was doing the same thing bad company was doing and not allowing them in encore. If we just gotten an encore we wouldn't have been so unruly during the bad company set. I saw a lot of rock bands back then and I have to be honest and say bad company was not very good, this was the run with the pack to her so it wasn't like they were just getting off the ground Also I saw Aerosmith in the summer of '76, it was very disappointing. I'm going to guess that they were whacked out on alcohol and drugs. They didn't get it together until train kept a rolling and then the single encore they did. There were three other acts on that bill all very good.

@@NormanPeterson It is labeled incorrectly. This was at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago as the intro states. Good catch though.

I’m from Philly. Saw them Villanova collage. It’s a CD gettin. All Kerry’s solos are cool. He had some rhythm played by Rich in a part. This is a cool solo also

I’m from Philly as well; since the late 1970s, I have seen Kansas at least 20 times at the Tower, the Rectum, etc. first show in 1979 Monolith tour…. Blew my mind. To this day, they are the most energetic and underrated six piece mini orchestra to ever bless this planet.

Picture is misleading; Steve didn’t start angling his C-3 like that until late 1977. He also kept his shirt on most of the time in ‘76 and earlier. Regardless, it’s all WAY underrated genius. 🙏🎹

I have Steve's old C-3 (pictured here) in my basement. I bought it shortly after this from KANSAS road manager, Clay Schell in Atlanta.
@chrisrickert86385 ай бұрын
@@davidmccall4776 wow! That’s superb! I was always upset when he put it away for a Crumar; which was obliviously much easier on the roadies. Is there anything unique about his C-3 I don’t know about? Love to hear it!
@davidmccall47765 ай бұрын
@@chrisrickert8638 I think just the fact that it belonged to Steve makes it unique. It has its battle scars, but still sounds great. Its white road case with the KANSAS Beverly Hills address of 9454 Wilshire Blvd 90212, and the bill of sale on KANSAS letterhead signed by Clay Schell is also unique.
@chrisrickert86385 ай бұрын
@@davidmccall4776 Indeed; ALL unique. Being a keyboard of some note for over 45 years, I’d love to just play it once…. Thanks for those unique facts. I wonder what ever happened to Steve’s Crumar Mojo…

@@chrisrickert8638 Your guess is as good as mine Chris. I had a Crumar Orchestrator back in those days, and it was a very fine and capable instrument with almost unlimited voices. Ahhh, the good old days! 🎹🎹🎹🎹☮✌

Ah...back in the day when they played the full version of Song for America. I have a question if anyone knows: the guitar solo starting at 34:10....is that Rich or Kerry? I think it's Rich but they were both so good I sometimes can't tell. It sounds more like Kerry coming in right before Child of Innocence begins.

Yes, it’s Kerry. If you listen to Lonely Street from the Canada Jam in 1978 ( well worth your time ) you can hear Rich in the left and Kerry on the right during the awesome guitar solos. Check it out.
