Hey everyone! You'll notice in this video that I refer to the Let's Go! games as Gen 9 - that's incorrect, they're Gen 7. I say Gen 9 quite a few times in this video, so pardon the mistake. 😅 I spent a ton of time researching, editing, and reviewing this video and totally missed that. Sorry everyone! It's a good reminder to make sure that when editing, I view it with fresh eyes. Thanks for understanding!

I'm not even sure if Gamefreak views "gens" as their audience does. No worries. I still think more gen 9 because the let's go games are still the only ones that have two pokemon exclusive to only that game and Go. So i can see it easier as gen 9 more than any other gen.

For reference on Lt. Surge in Vermilion, American army veterans are common to see around Japanese coastal towns, as that's where they were often stationed. Rough and rowdy American army vets in port towns is kinda a trope in Japanese media, based on reality. The wiki cites Yokosuka as a potential real life analogue to Vermilion, though it's more clearly influenced by Yokohama and Chubu.

When you take into account the fact that the PokeDollar is based on the Japanese yen rather than the US Dollar, it's not quite as expensive as you might originally think. That said, it's still quite expensive. In 1996 the average of Yen to USD was around 100 yen to 1 dollar. So 1,000,000 yen would be around $10,000. Yes, still EXTREMELY expensive for a bike. However, I have a theory. A GAME THE- oh, that's copyrighted by MatMat, nevermind. Anyways, my theory is that the bike in game is actually a motorcycle. All the trainers on the Cycling Road are bikers riding motorcycles. One of the bikers say, "nice bike, hand it over". Why would a grown ass biker want a kids bike, unless it was actually a motorcycle? That $10,000 is a bit more feasible, but still very expensive. Anyway, that's just my thoughts. I'm probably wrong anyways.

Sabrina's gym makes sense for Saffron city. Despite the psychic type being associated with tones of purple, pink and magenta in Pokemon, traditionally psychic powers have a connection to gold, that's why Golduck is called that despite being blue, and why Sabrina lives in the golden city and gives the gold badge.

I mean, at least in gen 1, the psychic type was arguably more closely associated with yellow than purple. Out of the pure psychic lines (at the time), Abra, Kadabra and Alakazam, Drowszee and Hypno were all yellow while Mr. Mime, Mewtwo and Mew were pink, the latter two being a legendary and an practically unobtainable mythical.
@JefferyMewtamer10 ай бұрын
Also, the Abra line, probably the line most Associated with Sabrina and the most notable Kanto Psychic after the Mew Duo, has a golden brown coat that sometimes looks more yellow than brown... and if memory serves, Gen I was one of the times its sprites were more yellow than Brown. Probably also worth noting that the badges and cities of Kanto have English names that mostly aren't direct translations from the Japanese... with the City Names mostly coming from the Japanese badge names which were mostly just basic colors rather than the fancy colors we got for the English city names.

When comparing Kanto, I always compare it to a classic rpg due to it being the first region you explore. I think a lot of inspiration for the region stems from there as well. The road blocks and hms allow different modes of transfortations. The different classes (or types) becoming more advanced and diverse as the games go on. The npcs giving little hints of where to go, and it's up to you to figure out how to get there. Also in rpgs pokemon that would of been bosses early on (onyx, starmie, raichu etc) become encounters/ obtainable later on, showing how the players have grown stronger throughout their journey. All in all its not perfect. HMs shouldn't take a move slot, and it does lack diversity in the route design. But the region does well in introducing us into the world and has the task of teaching us the basic mechanics of the pokemon world.

I always liked the theory that the security guards to Saffron were sleeper Rocket agents with the "tea" (or drink) being the "password" to enter into the city, it explains why no one could enter Saffron while Team Rocket was overtaking the city. I loved that you touched on how wearisome life is for the people of the region in regards to Team Rocket's rise, the biker gangs, the other gangsters, the burglars who flee to the islands (or work hand-in-hand with local authorities, all of which work in Blaine's gym.) There's also a sense of corruption with Giovanni's position as Gym Leader while also leader of Team Rocket.
@saffroncitytv Жыл бұрын
That is a really cool theory! I'm glad you liked the deep dive into Team Rocket and the residents of Kanto. I feel like there's a lot of culture to Kanto that's hiding well beneath the surface, but when you really dig deep, it's so interesting to me!

This video blew me away, I loved how you touched every single part of the region, a really great all around analysis. I've never been a biggest fan of Kanto but never could pin down the reasons until this video, I never realized just how much of Kanto was just grasslands and caves. I feel like that becomes an even more apparent problem thanks to the limited amount of Pokemon that appear in the overworld grass. More than any region Kanto would benefit the most from a complete reimagining to give it a bit more flair. I loved your complaints about how various "Kanto" Pokemon can't be found in the wild but rather from obscure trades or game corner prizes. Pokemon is all about exploring and finding new Pokemon, I don't get why they like to make getting rare Pokemon so boring. Also the idea for Lt.Surge to be in big city due to electricity powering it is GENIUS. Loved this style of content, I hope this video blows up since it's a great watch for any fans of the series!

Honestly, I was expecting people to disagree with my assessment of Kanto. On the one hand, I was anticipating some people saying that Kanto is the first region, and therefore the best, and nostalgia should be the reason it gets a 5/5 score. And on the other hand, I was expecting people to be like, "Kanto sucks compared to newer regions like Kalos and Alola because it's so simple and basic". But what ended up happening is that people seem to agree with the score. I did try to be as objective as possible and treat Kanto fairly, and the score it got was the score I honestly thought it deserved. Not amazing, but not terrible by any means. Nostalgia did give it a few points, but the fact that it still feels a little dated balanced it out. Idk, I hope I was being fair, as that was always my intention, but I'm glad you appreciate the way I scored this region. Thank you for the support. I can't wait to do Johto. 😊

Sabrina as the psychic type gym leader in Saffron city makes perfect sense when you look at it in context of when it first released and not from a modern lens. Think back to all the psychic types of Gen 1 found in Kanto and you’ll realize the majority of them have a yellow color scheme. The abra line and drowzee line are all yellow, exeggutor’s heads are yellow, etc. There are some exceptions sure, like jinx and my main man mewtwo, but at the time of creation yellow was the dominant psychic color. Also I will not accept this Lance slander. Lance isn’t and has never been a type specialist. As he himself says, “not all dragons are the dragon type!” He’s a master of *dragons,* not the dragon *type* and this is reflected in nearly all of his appearances across every corner of the franchise. Congrats on making a really good video! It absolutely deserves to have blown up the way it did. When you mentioned still needing 300 subs to get monetized I had to do a double take. XD Great job!

This review series is literally for me. I agree, I think the Region is so very important to the mainline Pokémon games. Maybe it's even the most crucial aspect for me, and the reason why the newer regions haven't captured the same magic for me

Well I hope you continue to enjoy the series! I'm working on Johto now, and it's so hefty. They really put a lot of love into the regions, and it's pretty evident in the earlier titles. I have my own opinions about the later titles though. Some of the newer regions, I personally, have some issues with, but we'll see how they fare in an objective setting. 😊

Take your time! Johto is a very special Region, though I'm sure it won't do well in Pokemon diversity haha. I really liked the video, just finished watching! I'd like to make a comment about that some Pokemon can only be found in one specific location or one specific in-game trade/gift, I think having those are very important to the Pokemon diversity! Of course, the diversity found in the Routes and Caves also should be good which Kanto isn't quite that haha

I'm so glad someone is doing this. I have MANY opinions on Kanto's design (mostly negative because of how game-ified it is) I would love to hear about how to tweek them to address these issues. (Personally I think Kanto would benefit a lot from a bus system that has a little passport that gets stamped to let you fast travel to)

Well there's more to come! I'll be working on Johto next! Also, I think Kanto would definitely benefit from a public transportation system! Especially considered that it's supposed to be modern. That's a great idea! I think I will do a "fixing Kanto's issues" type video soon!

What a fun video, this really brought me back to my childhood days (I'm 36 now)! I played Red, Blue, and, Yellow back when they first came to the USA and always loved the world building aspect of those games! Idk where exactly it could fit, but when you mentioned that the Pokemon regions are usually based off of a real-world place, I thought that there would be at least a little bit of discussion as to how well the real-world inspirations were represented, or how well the designers were able to capitalize creatively on it (the black sand beach in Alola comes to mind---while many beaches exist in Pokemon regions, only Alola has a black sand beach, bc of the Hawaiian influence). Especially as it also influences the designs of the Pokemon themselves, like how Galar's starters are designed after British celebrities/pop culture icons. Wrt Kanto, I think it's interesting that a region defined by its commitment to urbanization is also rife with poison types, particularly ones that are the result of pollution like the Grimer and Koffing evo lines. Maybe instead of one big category talking about the real-world design influence, it can be added as small segments in the relevant design categories? Bc I personally have always wondered if the real-world Kanto region had any influence on the designers' decisions when they were developing the themes and aesthetics of the region they were creating. I think such influences have become much more clear in more modern Pokemon games (like, the Spanish influence in Paldea is obvs when you have characters literally using the Spanish language), especially as assets and technological power have increased over time, but I think it'd still make for interesting discussion points, and maybe could give answers behind why, say, biome diversity varies. Like, idk much about Spain, but does an actual huge snowy mountain exist there for Glaseado Mt to have been inspired by? If there isn't, is that a positive or negative thing, as in the service of creating biome diversity, we've sacrificed fidelity to the real-world inspiration? What impact does this have on the immersion of the region (bc personally, Snowbelle City in Kalos has ALWAYS bothered me, given that there's just a random patch of snow that's literally right next to a temperate forest, without any kind of transition between the two XD)? As another example, while there's obvs nothing like Ballonlea/Glimwood Tangle in real-world Britain, it does pay a nice homage to all the fantasy and fae folklore of cultures within Britain. Idk, I'm rambling now, but maybe it's something to think about for the future region reviews. In any case, this video was very well done, and I'm definitely interested in checking out more from this channel! I am curious as to how you're going to be covering Hisui---is that going to be a region all of its own, or does it just get bundled up into the review of Sinnoh, with discussions of how one transformed into the other? Even if they are covered as separate, is there going to be crossover discussion(s) in one or both about those changes over time, either forward-looking-back (Sinnoh to Hisui), or past-looking-forward (Hisui to Sinnoh)? And while it's very new and it'll probably take you a long time to get there to cover it (assuming you're tackling these in generational order), I'm also curious to see if SV's DLC is going to be included, seeing as it's now established that Blueberry Academy is in Unova, or will you consider it to be more like the Sevii Islands? (Tho I suppose we'll have to wait until Part 2 comes out to be able to more thoroughly judge this one). Is Kitakami on the roster for a region deep-dive of its very own (as it seems to me that there's enough substance and material for it to absolutely be judged in all of your categories), or would its nature alone as DLC disqualify it? Same goes to SwSh's DLC locations, as you can fast travel to them, unlike the Sevii Islands.
@saffroncitytv Жыл бұрын
To your first point on reviewing the connection between the Pokemon regions and their places of inspired origin; that will likely have to be an entire video of its own. There's no way I could fit that much discussion into a Region Review and still get the reviews out in a decent timeframe. That being said, I think that's a really interesting concept, and I probably should do some videos like that. I think it would be really interesting to compare the regions to their real-world counterparts. To your question on how Hisui will be handled; Hisui is almost unrecognizable from modern-day Sinnoh, so it'll likely get it's own video, though some aspects between the two may overlap slightly. But there is plenty of Hisui that could be reviewed based on my criteria. And since they are the same region, there will likely be some comparisons, but I'll try to review it as a stand-alone region (even though it IS technically Sinnoh). As far as DLC is concerned, I'm not sure how I'll tackle those yet. I'm considering doing reviews for the regions of the spin-off titles like Orre, for example. Those will likely have different and potentially fewer criteria to meet. I think the DLC areas would likely need to be reviewed in the same way, but Kitakami and the DLC areas of Sword and Shield will likely get their own separate review, since you don't really get to experience them via the region of the mainline game unless you pay more money for the content. The Blueberry Academy will likely not be included in Unova's review for the same reason. I might run a poll though to see what other folks think. 😊 Anyway, you brought up some really thoughtful points, and it got my noggin thinking quite a bit, so I appreciate your comment greatly. Thank you very much for your very well thought-out inquiries. I'm really glad you enjoyed the region review, and I hope you'll stay tuned for Johto. 😊

8:02 Another reason the Sevii Islands don't count as part of Kanto is that the residents are complaining about the Bikers 'coming from Kanto' and a shop keeper can't initially stock his shop because he's originally from Kanto. If the Sevii Islands were part of Kanto, they would refer to those areas as something like the mainland.

It should be noted that canonically, Gen 2 Pokemon are also a part of Kanto's Pokemon with a few exceptions... the 2 regions are so connected that they are almost a single region... Also, it would be terrible if you encountered more Koffing and Muk... And the reason some Pokemon are so common is because they are like the real life animals that are so common.... pigeons and rats and stuff.... they are pests...

I really like this breakdown of each region. Filled with some really good info and facts makes this really enjoyable to watch and listen to. Only I would've personally split up 'Kanto' to Kanto from gen 1,Kanto from gen3 and onward and this for the other regions aswell. Because Kanto gen 1 would deserve the 3 100% but Kanto from Let's Go for example improved on some stuff and makes me feel it deserves a higher score.

Excellent and fair review. I think that score is plenty appropriate considering it's the first Pokémon region ever. It does so much right in its first go, it's certainly worthy of most of its praise. However, the region clearly has a lot of padding in the form of maze-like high encounter caves and hiding Pokémon behind oversaturated encounter rates. On top of that, the mismatch of towns, their names, and the gym types there is something I have also noticed. Like why Giovanni in Viridian? The badge is a green feather or leaf. How come the first gym you even encounter isn't accessible until the end of the game? There was clearly meant to be another gym leader in that place meant to be faced immediately, which you can see in some released concept art. Sabrina has a Venomoth instead of Koga and Koga's gym members use Psychic types,I have no doubt that there were some mid production changes they had to commit to. Saffron would be the next city you head to after Cerulean, lining up Surge perfectly, and then opening up the rest of the map for more non-linear exploration. Relocating Surge and making Saffron inaccessible makes the game far more linear, which draws it out a bit. Hence, the underground tunnels to bypass Saffron, and the making of Rock Tunnel to be a mandatory obstacle instead of something you can choose to do or skip like Seafoam islands or the coastal routes south of Lavender. A lot of people overhype the first 150, but a lot of the designs are fairly bland by any standard. Not everything aged particularly well, and the Pokémon doesn't even utilize the original types that well (ALL Ghost types also being Poison, Tangela is the only solo Grass type, Jynx is the only solo Ice type, there are no solo Rock types, Dragons are very under developed, Bugs have no utility or good moves, etc.) To give Kanto a higher score would mean that the games haven't improved upon their world design at all in over 20 years, which just isn't true.
@saffroncitytv Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for sharing your perspective! I like a lot of the points you made - I hadn't even considered the fact that the Viridian Gym badge doesn't seem to fit with Giovanni either. I wish the games would've had more NPCs talk about the lore more in-depth, and maybe explain a few of the inconsistencies. Anyway, I'm glad you liked the video 😊, I'll be doing Johto next!
@alecrutz956 Жыл бұрын
Jynx isn't even solo ice, it's also part psychic. even more silly is that of the few ice types, I'm pretty sure, unless I'm forgetting something, only Jynx and Articuno take super effective damage from fire types because the others are all part water. There's also no solo ghost types either :( also I heard on plague von karma's channel that apparently, there was originally a gym before Brock, which would have been normal type, which would likely explain the gym in viridian.
