This song originally sampled Lauryn Hill's Mystery Of Iniquity on the hook but Lauryn Hill wouldn't clear the sample. Kanye West then asked Syleena Johnson to re-sing it but switch it up and put her flare to it. That way they wouldn't have to get clearance for doing it the exact same way. Kanye West was working against a deadline he had for his The College Dropout album and Syleena Johnson re-doing the hook saved him from missing the deadline because he was going to have to push back his album if he hadn’t gotten it done. That's why near the end of the song he says "Now Syleena you just like a safe belt, you saved my life" The version of the song with the Lauryn Hill sample is on Kanye West's Freshman Adjustment mixtape

This song reminds me of the play "Raisin in the Sun" (1959) by Lorraine Hansberry There's a poor black family living in small apartment in Chicago's Southside in the 50s. The father dies and leaves a life insurance settlement and the family can't decide what to do with the money. The mom wants to buy a house and move out of the area they are in, in hopes of starting a new life for herself and her family. The son wants to buy part of a liquor store, the daughter wants to go to med school... the daughter in law also wants a house, same as the mother. When the mother put a down payment on a house in a white neighborhood, a rep comes and tries to offer them money in exchange for withdrawing their bid on the house. He comes bearing a contract : $$ for agreeing to stay out of the white neighborhood. I should mention that the mother put a down payment on the house in the white neighborhood because it was cheaper than living elsewhere. When Kanye says "the white man gets paid off of all of that", I think of this guy with the contract. Except he's trying to pay them to give up the American dream, i.e. home ownership, upward mobility, fresh start, etc. Kanye talks about "the white man" getting paid off of black people in this song, while in her play Hansberry talks about black people getting paid to not buy property in a white neighborhood. You could follow this theme into the song, "Neighbors" by J. Cole. And you can trace "Raisin in the Sun" back to the poem 'Harlem' by Langston Hughes, which is where Hansberry took the play's title from. Anyway, some interesting threads to follow here
