Ben H all three of those artists released one or more gold certified albums between 2000 and 2004. They might not have been selling at 50 cent level (no one was tbh) but those kind of sales are more than enough to consider them mainstream.

Mos Def had just one solo album by the time Kanye was signed to Rock-A-Fella. His second was in 2004 and was certified gold in 2017. And Talib dropped his album in 2002. Only Common reached a wide audience. Talib and Mos Def each had only dropped one solo album each and one collaborative project as Black Star.
