The part where Kanzi models the behaviour of the words the researcher states for his sister really shows you how alert he is. His gentle personality and eagerness to learn new things are palpable in clips like these.

Kanzi is such a beautiful bonobo soul.. I love his smile! And his squeaking is adorable! Shes lucky to have been blessed with an ape like him especially when the target was actually his mother, Matata they wanted to use for this experiment when Kanzi basically volunteered himself. I wish Dr. Sue would be nicer to him sometimes, and cut him some slack.. I mean Kanzi has a good life, HOWEVER he is still a research ape.. I mean she needs to yell at him because the poor thing wanted to touch the doll? Penny Patterson would laugh, and tease when Koko would misbehave during work.. well, experiments. I like Dr. Sue.. i just think she should have had a little bit more patience, and understanding. These are not children, although they ARE as intelligent as one, I just felt really bad for Kanzi. Like, Dr. Sue just take off the floor what's distracting Kanzi. Either way, Shes a very lucky Doctor, and Kanzi is a very special Ape. 🐵🐒

There is an orangutan that can drive golf carts as good as any human. Looks like an old man with a beard when he drives. I mainly wanted to bring up the fact that many people think animals have no souls. I have even heard this belief from famous radio personalities on air. Its videos like these that make that point of view so wrong. I absolutely think ALL animals have souls with thinking and reasoning abilities. Hell, I've even seen a wild spider with cob webs stuck on its feet. A human bent down and video'd him taking the cob webs off with tweezers and for each leg the spider would raise its next leg for the person to take the cob webs off. That video was amazing and really made me take another look at how much even the smallest creature can think and reason on its own!

Yes, I get that her approach was a little unorthodox but she didn't harm them in any way and instead showed that they can distinguish good from bad and be so caring that they usually try to deescalate conflicts and didn't turn on her even though they could have easily overpowered her. She was one of the first to advocate for granting rights to great apes alongside Jane Goodall, f. ex. on the show called "The Great Ape Trial" but doesn't get much credit for it, even though her research was used in court for restricting biomedical research on great apes.

This is the first time that I'm on THIS side of things, but... why are they still treating Kanzi like a child? He's 34 years old, he's lived with humans his entire life, he's clearly HIGHLY intelligent, so why do they restrict him using negative reinforcement? He's a grown ape for Pete's sake! Let him do his thing, and he'll ask for help when he needs help! I'm clearly not insinuating that we release him into the wild, because again, he's lived with humans his whole life; he knows nothing but the human world, but... Maybe even get him his own butler and apartment! That seems the logical next step!

Actually, in the beginning, she is talking to Panbanisha, Kanzi's step-sister. In that clip, Panbanisha is a young bonobo, small and relatively easy to handle physically...and like a child (or a dog, or an elephant) can be taught what is 'acceptable' behavior around humans, and what is not. Once a bonobo (or any other large wild animal) grows up and has some weight to it, keeping it from ripping your face off (or your dog's face off) can be difficult. You probably don't really care what I think, but Sue Savage Rumbaugh gets unjustly slammed for her methods. She treated Panbanisha and Kanzi as a mother would a child, and she loved them like they were her own children. Animal experiments sort of suck, but love goes a long way towards making it palitable in my bood. It is not a perfect world.

How can our brains understand speech and then our mouths develop the ability to make speech? Is speech came after understanding speech then there was no speach to try to understand I'm the first place. The ability to make speech must have come first. We must have developed a way to make speech and then develop comon sounds so that we can learn to make use of it and understand it.

Dogs' understanding of human speech is several levels below that of apes'. Fortunately for dog owners, we co-evolved and developed ways to communicate without many words. You can point at an object and your dog will follow your gaze (wolves can't do this), and dogs can make those sad puppy eyes and you understand they want you to feed them (they evolved some facial muscles specifically to do this).

I know your comment is old but she said in another video that it was part of the regulations. People were already getting on her case for allowing the bonobos too much freedom and being too close to them as they accepted her as one of their own. She talks about how she was ultimately bullied out of the lab in the video Ape Testimony 6. But at least her research was used as evidence in court to curtail biomedical research on non-human primates. I think the Smithsonian Magazine article about her mentions that as well.

I think that if the Apes were also raised with a puppy and both were trained with human language it would show that both apes and dogs' that are domesticated can understand human language and relate in human ways... other animals that have been raised around human. Birds like crows, and horses and elephants when trained can understand human language, and respond in human ways of understanding... Many animals have their own body language of communications and sounds they make to communicate... The unique relationship with some wild animals, how they are connected. Wild birds and squirrels will be on alert, to ground animals to the advancing of most predictors and let out a warning if they see it coming near... An African Honeyguide bird has developed a relationship with humans by guiding humans to bee nest ...and then waiting after the honey is collected for a share of the Honey... that they made it possible for the humans to find... We humans are naive to the facts that most animals have ways of communication without speech that can be more intense than we know...

honestly, I expected kanzi to completely fail the pictures test. so he does understand individual words. I'm not sure about sentences. telling him to 'cut the onion with the knife' is NOT a valid way to test this. he only has to know what onion and knife are. I mean, what else could he do with a knife? besides, living with humans he would have seen humans cutting onions with knifes before (especially onions placed inside a bowl). this may be simple imitation. they should have used sentences where the grammar matters. or at least test his understanding of verbs, by having one shoe off before asking him to 'take the shoe off'. if he tries to put the missing shoe back on, then he only understands 'shoe' and guessing the rest . again, there's only so much you can do with a shoe. or with a fridge (put in stuff, take out stuff). which makes me suspicious about this whole test. he clearly responded to the word 'untie', surprisingly. and then failed to respond to 'you can take it off now'. is it because that sentence had no nouns in it?
@michaelstoffel9668
@michaelstoffel9668 7 жыл бұрын
1whitemoon Also she points to the bowl of onions then to the pot clearly indicating desired action. There's no doubt chimps are somewhat intelligent but I question how much of this is trained response to certain words as opposed comprehension of the meaning of the word. For instance when she said can you take off my shoe at first all he did was point at the shoe then when she repeated it and extend her leg did he try to remove it. Did he know what all of those words meant or did he know one word with context clues reinforced by constant training. When the baby was being punished did he react to her sudden change in body posture that clearly seems like a challenge, trying to protect the youngling but was to afraid to actually hurt her due to negative reinforcement. There is so much in this video that leaves me with more questions than answers. How did they train them to understand those words? why do they have to constantly repeat it? How much of it is the word and how much of it is body language? Because that's how animals communicate in the wild posture, facial expressions, and varying tones. for me although it was impressive i would have much rather them performed the picture test by pointing to the picture instead of saying the word, the have him point to a corresponding button on the lexigram associating the picture with the word. If he does understand language why not teach him phonetic spelling and put syllables and different cards and asking him to make the word, surly it would be easy enough to teach Mo Ney, or Ba na na. And if they can associate the symbols on the lexigram with words why would they not be able to recognize mo corresponds with the sound moe. Then ask them to put the sounds together with the lexigram to form words. Perhaps I'm hoping for to much, I like to think animals have the ability to understand to a degree but mostly because of body language and non verbal cues. I have no doubt animals feel emotions they may not understand what to call that emotion but if a dog gets a huge release of endorphins when it sees it owner that has to produce some sort of physical effect on the body. like wise with other animals. For example when i want to show affection to my kitten i rub my head against hers and pucker my lips like I'm going to give her a kiss, i give her no treats and say no words. Then later she will climb on my chest rub on me then lick my lips then continues to kneed and pur. Clearly that shows she associates that action with some sort of comfort or pleasant feeling or else she wouldn't engage it it freely with no coersion. i think one day chimps may be able to fully be capable speech but its not going to come from training with humans, i think it will come as their brain develops more to be able to process more complex information, and have a need to express that information, possibly starting with various toned grunts in conjunction with body language. To develop a need for their vocal cords to evolve. Which will probably take a very very long time. But I will be very pleasantly surprised if they develop that ability in my lifetime. Sorry for the novel I just really like this subject, i read animal behavior studies for fun sometimes lol

Other specific experiments ran with Kanzi have shown that he IS sensitive to verbs and more rudimentary syntax. Namely, he uses verb -> noun formations and pays attention to word order. Unfortunately I don't have the specific citations for this to share.

I understand your doubts about the cutting onions part, but to me the refrigerator and the shot parts prove he can understand sentences, especially since she was wearing a mask. Also, you can see Kanzi trying to understand for a second what she means.

Why don't you teach the sign language instead of these large charts with symbols that are not known to normal society so no one can communicate with Kanzi if his owner were to die etc
@theftking
@theftking 5 жыл бұрын
You fail to grasp the entire point of the experiment. It's about _speech recognition_ and sign language doesn't involve any speech. The board of glyphs allows the bonobos to 'speak' in a way that sign language does not. If these apes were taught sign language, they'd never get so far advanced as to be able to "put the key in the refrigerator" or "take off my shoe; untie it first" or "get the ball that is outside".
