in my opinion "Merry Christmas Mr Lawence" is one of the best written songs ever. All versions I have heard are incredible which is a testament to songwriting genius of Mr. Sakamoto. The David Sylvian version, or the piano version Mr. Sakamoto does or the original all are breathtaking. This version with the guitar is almost causes me to cry because she brings out such emotion in a song that already has emotion like no other song. Simply beautiful.

i wish David Sylvian would have performed Forbidden Colours live with Ryuichi Sakamoto. In the original arrangement. Sylvian did perform the song, but changed it drastically to fit his album Dead Bees on A Cake which was released in 1999.

Great work by both. The master ryuichi Sakamoto did a great job in taking a step back and not let the piano overpower the guitar as is common when the guitar is paired with another instrument. Kaori muraji is of course a master of the instrument.

This is objectively one of the most beautiful songs on earth. I cry tears of joy, pain, love, and every emotion on earth every time I hear it. May he rest peacefully. He’s a genius that will forever live in my soul.
Since I heard this first, way back then, it remains a simple yet enigmatic piece of music. A total classic regardless of version, as well noted in other comments. It takes some serious Sakamoto expertise to create such a simple tune, yet a tune that can bring tears to the eyes of the listener. Such pieces of music that can bring forth such emotion, so easily, are surely classics. Sakamoto Rule!
I heard this years ago and had forgotten about it. But now revisiting it, it is twice as melodic and twice as powerful in creating emotions than when I first heard it. I have been a guitarist for nearly 60 years but some of the chord shapes which Kaori is producing defy description. Totally stunning.

Coming back to revisit this again. I love this version of the melody best, but they are all great! The movie is an outstanding work of art also, in large part because of Mr Sakamoto's sound track, his part in the film and the incomparable David Bowie.

to me, an equisite piece by two exquisite musicians... the subtlety of the timbric variations of each of the instruments and the harmonic variations of the piece have to be appreciated. Also, it induces a trance by repetition - quite oriental - that is strongly reinforced in the last part. A masterpiece in its economy of resources and mastery of interpretation.

I am inclined to be believe this to be the best rendition.
She plays with absolute authority, perfect intonation and control, and the flourishes of a true maestro. As an amateur player, I CAN play this recognisably, with some feeling. But I can't get anywhere near the majestic luxury she delivers. It's UTTERLY humbling, to see a performance like this.

I imagined that I'm in a place filled with snow and is filled with darkness but at the same time, I feel a sense of hope that every problem that I'm facing will eventually work out. It's both a sad and happy feeling and to the composer, Ryuichi, it has been more than 20 years after the movie but it still touched my life whenever I hear this song. Bravo.

I first heard this song as a result of watching "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence" many, many years ago. It was still recognizable from just a few bars played of it on a radio show lead-in. Ryuichi both acted in it and composed this tragic but beautifully haunting melody as it's theme. Its alternate name is "Forbidden Colors", forbidden because of the issue it addresses of gay undercurrents in Japanese society during WWII.
This is absolutely AMAZING! Why has it only got like 8000 views????? IT DESERVS SO MUCH MORE! Kaori, you are fantastic :) Keep it up!
