Have a 2001 400 exc that was tied up to a telephone pole outside for close to a decade. Thing runs solid and rips. These Ktms are great bikes.

Man i love these older Ktms👍 probably my favorite 4 stroke motor of all time, the 520/525...brute torque right off idle 😊 ive owned 3 over the years. Where I ride at here in WV, there are alot of long, steep pipeline hillclimbs and these big orange thumpers were the favorite bike of the locals for a long time.

Remember riding at the moto track in Rocky hill in 03 and treadwell was ripping around on one.He would come into the corner and roll the throttle,we were in awe at the low end/torque the bike had!awesome machine fellas.

I remember Kelly Smith riding that bike for KTM in the off season "4-stroke nationals" around 2002, and winning the series I believe. Red Bud had a round where Kelly DNFed a moto though. He missed a gear up the face of LaRacco's leap, (I was talking with his Dad, Hershel, who was watching Kelly, and in the middle of our conversation he said, Opps, he missed a gear."), and came up short with a hard hit. He did not crash or get hurt, but the engine broke a motor mount causing the engine to shift and pull the carb from the air boot. I will just stick to the trails. :)

I have a 2001 MXC520 with the factory desert tank, electric start and a six speed. As a bonus it is street licensed which makes it extra usable in the Pacific Northwest. I have had it for almost 20 years and never fails to put a smile on my face when I get it out.

Awesome machine! My last dirt bike was the best one ever at the time to me. It was a mid 70s Penton 250 hare scrambler with a KTM motor. I always loved the Sachs motors, but many said the KTM was a better choice.

I believe that you may not be able to do some of the stuff on a old bike as you can today,---but you can/will have just as much fun doing what the bike can do.

I still have a 01 520 mxc. Rips harder than my 16 450xcw. RFS engines badass, but we all know it's originally a husaberg design. KTM made the husaberg design reliable.

I had the legendary 4fiddy3 version of this bike…I don’t know why I ever sold it.Blisteringly fast,and bulletproof.They reckon the 453 is the best engine that KTM NEVER made.(kinda a hybrid of different piston and Conrod…etc)
@matte8439 Жыл бұрын
520/525 cylinder on the shorter stroke 400 crank if I'm thinking right? I've heard alot about the 453 and how well they run. Should have built one when I had the parts around to do it. Always wanted to ride one and see what the 453 was all about.

I had an 02 ktm520sx and that bike was an absolute beast!!! Definitely the most powerful bike I’ve ever owned and I’ve owned two stroke 250s and four stroke 450s and that ktm would’ve smoked those bikes!! it honestly felt nearly as powerful as my brothers KX 500 two-stroke! But unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be because that KTM I had got stolen! It was eventually recovered, but all that was left of it was a burnt skeleton of a once vary modded out beast of a dirtbike!!

Big bore timing chain slap is something that doesnt go away. 450s have such a short stroke and twin cam. The big stroke singles make seismic waves along the chain route, ridden hard need a new timing chain regularly along with guides. **edit he shoots on cold bikes, these bikes run 0.006" exhaust valve clearance, it definitely is a loud valve set as well...

They all rattle, a lot of it is from the clutch but it's normal, mine has an alloy sump guard and sounds like it's gonna explode. I tried the later 500 and it's just not the same. Kinda bulletproof, you can get them out to 640 and over 80hp, mine's stock with over 800 hrs on the original piston and bottom end. A keeper.

Nothing compared to a 2 stroke... I have a KTM 525 exc and it's loads better on fuel than a 2 stroke, I had a KTM 200 sx road legal and I was forever filling that up lol my 525 can easily go more than 50 miles before needing to fill up. Could get an accurate figure if needs be and I'm not light on the throttle 😅
