This is a demonstration of a variety of techniques used in coil making to create our themed pieces for the coil pot project. This is geared specifically for my beginner classes, and may not apply to many people. In this video I use Standard 103 Earthenware without grog.

I am a high school ceramics teacher and potter. I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 28 years, the past 20 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsA...
I started my KZbin channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!

Thank you. Love your videos and have recommended them to people I know just starting out in ceramics. All these years and I have never read anywhere or seen any demo that said to twist the coil in opposite directions. Not even in my university ceramics course for my BFA and not even recently in university courses I took so I could have access to very large electric kilns and a gas kiln. I feel like I should contact all my former high school ceramic students and tell them. I feel like I short changed them.

Apple TV and KZbin make a wonderful couple. I started watching tutorials on glazing in my own language (Dutch) and somehow that lead me to this video. It was all on auto play, so I actually had to go back on my phone to check my history to find your channel so I could start following you. I’m following some throwing classes, but I’m also interested to learn more about hand building. Somehow I failed to add the right words to the search bar, because I was under the impression that there wasn’t so much about that on KZbin. I’m very happy to have found you. This video really makes me want to go try all the techniques you showed. Need to have a little patience though. It’s 1 AM, so there’s other necessities first 😊 Thanks for the wonderful tutorial and inspiration!

Just learned how to do coils today in my Ceramics 1 class. Wasn't quite paying attention to the teacher when she showed how to cut the excess coil but I ended up doing it your way and I'm glad that's okay. My coils sometimes end up cracking as I'm rolling them around my base. This maybe because my teacher gave us slightly drier clay than what we're used too. Or am I making the coils too thin? Nobody else in my class seemed to have this issue. I also love your rope technique! Idk if my teacher is going to show us this but it would be nice to try out anyway.

@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 4 жыл бұрын
Are the bowls wheel thrown or handbuilt? I’d look at two possible things- #1: are the walls and floor of even thickness?? If, say the base is much thicker than the walls, the walls would dry more quickly, and would shrink before the bottom perhaps causing cracking from uneven drying. #2: make sure you’re drying slowly- maybe even put the bowls rim to rim or at least upside down to help promote even drying. :)

+Susan Bainbridge Thanks for the kind words! I use Standard 103 earthenware for this project with my students. Great tips and explanations- thanks. Why vinegar?
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 5 жыл бұрын
Good question... and I wish I had a bit of a more scientific answer for you! But, vinegar sometimes has an acidic reaction on the clay- especially if it is drier, and allows it to activate the surface of the clay a bit more and help with the bond. I honestly don't use it that much unless I am working with stiffer clay, otherwise, I just use water! :) Oh, and it works well too, if you want to make slip- just take bone dry scrap and drop in a little vinegar, it breaks it down quickly! :)

@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! :) The clay I used is an earthenware clay without grog... the brand is Standard, and it is type 103. Yes, it is necessary to fire this type of clay in a kiln- reaching a temperature around 1900 degrees Fahrenheit. (I fire to cone 04 for bisque firing) Only firing it in a kiln this hot will create a permanently hard clay structure. If not fired, it would eventually disintegrate back into slip if you immersed it in water. :)
