Most 'pros' in MMA have SOME kind of traditional MA background. Most but not all. All of the best ones, absolutely had traditional training, so their technique is king. Someone who does only mma training, sure they'll get taught the techniques of punching and kicking, but how many of them are refining the 'art' of the kick to be truly boss with it? Not that many actually.

The black belt has talent. He's relying on the kicks too much and becomes predictable. If he mixed it up with some crisp hands, he could set them up way better and keep the opponent guessing. He also needs a lot of time to get back into stance and re-establish that distance, that's the part of striking that a lot of guys neglect. The MMA guy should work on his submissions more, there were some massive opportunities there.

He makes an impression of someone from taekwondo, rather than karate. Typical ring behavior of a tkd practitioner who's been out of the game for a while. A full-contact karate fighter, kyokushin or seidokaikan - would behave completely different in a fight. Just watch kyokushin fights. They are radically different in nature.

@@MR-nl8xr There are a lot of moves to get out of mount. It's day one BJJ but these guys clearly are just winging it and trying to do stuff they saw on TV without understanding how the moves really work. Usually whatever moves you use to get out of mount is dictated by where your opponents weight is and what they are doing. If they are sitting back on your hips you are probably going to elbow escape or trap n roll/upa. If they are in a high mount closer to your head you will probably buck and sneak out the back. It just depends on what your opponent is doing. In this case upa would have worked well.

Taekwondo comes from three Korean words, tae, "kick," kwon, "fist or punch," and do, "the art of,” so taekwondo does have punches, along with back fists, hammer fists, ridge hands, knife hands, etc.

Kicks can be much more effective than punches at distance management and targeting your opponent's weak spots in a fight. Legs are more powerful and have a longer reach. Punches also leave one of your guards open for counter punches. Kicks are lower risk and higher damage. Lyoto "the Dragon" Machida (a karate master) was famous for his knockout kicks in his pro MMA career against huge and powerful opponents, some of which were undefeated champs until they met Machida. Don't sleep on kicks. Karate kicks are no joke.

Depends on the TKD style - the two main federations are ITF and WTF (International and World TKD Federations, respectively). WTF is the style done in the Olympics, and yeah - it's almost all kicks. In contrast, ITF doesn't focus on that style of competition as much, and as such they still use their punches more. (Which is not to say they punch a LOT, only that you don't see the "hands always at their side" style of fighting as you do in WTF.) But obviously it depends on the school and teacher and the student and all that stuff.

It's crazy how much you can learn from this league/fight that was totally unknown as recently as like 20 years ago. Two decently trained fighters, there's a good chance they'll literally tire themselves out before knocking one or the other out. Decent ground game destroys even high level striking if they don't have ground defense. And 9 times out of 10, a controlled safe fight like this will squash a beef, help both parties grow, and frankly be more civil than the alternative.

Theres many different forms of karate, his is painfully obvious that he is only focused on high energy reach kicks. Other forms of karate focus more on punches, tosses, and energy conserving methods of striking and defense. One of the first things I learned is using kicks requires significantly more energy than most other forms of striking, and is not a great way to approach fighting. However, if someone practices anything for thousands of hours, they can still be a deadly weapon, but it's shortcomings are more apparent.

He's not a karate guy but a taekwondo fighter. They usually use more kicks (than punching) which can be risky in a street fight unless you're really top notch. In a street fight it's best to keep kicks low so there's less chance of the opponent grabbing your leg. I'm a black belt myself in karate, and in a serious fight you have to go with your strengths and avoid giving any edge to your opponent. Even Bruce Lee said he would fight very differently in a real fight to what he did in his movies.

This is why there are so few successful mma fighters that have big karate basis/style. The ones that are successful? They’re perfectionist w/ their karate skills- Wonderboy & GSP come to mind. You have to be a karate G to rely on just that in a “real” fight. But- ton of elements of karate/taekwondo translate over to mma/street fighting, ability to throw a solid leg/body kick, the ability to switch stances @ any point as needed, the sideways stance is beneficial in any fight as you make yourself a smaller target & protect your “softer” areas like groin & mid belly/throat.

TaeKwonDo black belt here. Yeah, i would lose 9 times out of 10 with a guy that trained MMA as many years as i have trained TKD. Don’t get me wrong, tkd is not a bad martial art, and is quite good at kicking, but that’s it. It doesn’t give you really good punching abilities, and gives you 0 grappling and groung game

AS a karate guy myself, those kicks were way to risky. He should have been setting up those kicks. Spinning hook kick is too risky for me. Side kick was pretty good but he should have followed up. Alot of missed counters. That MMA guy was a tough dude. Sometimes our strikes dont work always for tough guys like that MMA guy. But otherwise amazing fight from both fighters.

I’m a black belt in tae kwon do. Not much experience fighting karate guys, but I was shocked to see how quick karate guys gas tank ran out. Seriously. That must’ve been a Mcdojo or something. Maybe the type of Karate that stops for a breather between every point 😂 He opened up with a flawless spin hook kick, and I thought it was go time. Two kicks later he’s throwing sloppy slow back kicks. The other guy had no training in any martial art. He couldn’t take advantage of anything.

@Polentaccio

That's because you guys don't punch in the face and largely point fight. In this case your GAS tank gets drained when you eat shots or have to defend against them. People don't talk about that enough but the minute you catch a few to the face or head and get stuck on the bottom trying to escape, you eat up your gas tank. That guy would probably do fine in a TKD or Karate tournament.

This was the definition of a good fight and good sportsmanship. These dudes will probably drink beers for life together now. Both are a long way from Pro, the important thing is they gave it all they had. They at least had Pro attitudes about their fight.

This is the first I seen of this little gem! 😂😂 IM BIG FAN of ONE and UFC never watched mighty mouse's streams! (So I know I'm in for a treat) when mighty mouse did Commentary for the Super bon vs Chingiz Allazov I was laughing😂💪🏻! Mighty mouse's face is hilarious reaction to this😂😂 especially after he said "nice sprall" and they have this very awkward exchange while also standing up from the ground!😂 Real talk Karate guy, won, tho. He landed more and actually I had him for more sub attempts too if I have the count right? (Anyone else see anything I didn't?) to be honest good fight credit to both those guys for not giving up even when gases out like that! Heart! 💪🏻🙏🏻

I was very fortunate every school I ever attended focused on real life application. We weren’t into sport fighting. We weren’t into points. We needed to work the same way worked in the school in the streets.. we were all capable of doing flashy kicks, but we never used them because they weren’t practical against a season fighter. Everybody can get lucky in the streets you don’t got time to hope on luck. It’s all about proper application, strong technique, heart, and stamina. If you don’t have the proper mindset, you got no business in that situation. You have to know how to block out emotions and focus on the goal at hand. But they showed hard even though they were completely out of breath, exhausted, forgetting where they were in the middle of a fight again mindset.

One of the tell tale signs of a fighter, to me, is how they stand up from sitting on their butts. They always stand up in base to avoid incoming traffic and keep a wide enough base to deflect that traffic.

This looks like all the cage fights I've had as a teen. On about 3 occassions me and my opponent were glad we were breathing by the end of it. Absolute exhaustion, neither of us were even raising hands, nobody dared to kick. Ground was just to get some relaxed breathing time. Then both of us had the same idea and we spun in opposite directions attempting a spinning elbow/ backfist with nothing but the motion behind it. It was yielded a draw as we both connected and fell down at the same time.
