Karate (空手?) (English /kəˈrɑːtiː/; Japanese pronunciation: [kaɽate] ( listen); Okinawan pronunciation: IPA: [kaɽati]) is a martial art developed on the Ryukyu Islands in what is now Okinawa, Japan. It developed from the indigenous martial arts of Ryukyu Islands (called te (手?), literally "hand"; tii in Okinawan) under the influence of Chinese martial arts, particularly Fujian White Crane. Karate is now predominantly a striking art using punching, kicking, knee strikes, elbow strikes and open hand techniques such as knife-hands, spear-hands, and palm-heel strikes. Historically and in some modern styles grappling, throws, joint locks, restraints, and vital point strikes are also taught. A karate practitioner is called a karateka (空手家?).
Karate developed in the Ryukyu Kingdom. It was brought to the Japanese mainland in the early 20th century during a time of cultural exchanges between the Japanese and the Chinese. It was systematically taught in Japan after the Taisho era. In 1922 the Japanese Ministry of Education invited Gichin Funakoshi to Tokyo to give a karate demonstration. In 1924 Keio University established the first university karate club in mainland Japan and by 1932, major Japanese universities had karate clubs. In this era of escalating Japanese militarism, the name was changed from 唐手 ("Chinese hand" or "Tang hand")[7] to 空手 ("empty hand") - both of which are pronounced karate - to indicate that the Japanese wished to develop the combat form in Japanese style.After World War II, Okinawa became an important United States military site and karate became popular among servicemen stationed there.

This sir is one of the very few videos of actual demostrations of karate in MMA. Most other videos say that fighter X was a karate practitioner but you see nothing resembling actual karate moves. Here we saw kicks, distance, low stances straight punches. Excelent.

Having trained in Karate including hard sparring and Muay Thai kickboxing I can say Karate has all the basic kickboxing techniques and much more like the spin kick so as long as they spar hard enough they can definitely hold their own against kick boxers. That being said both need BJJ, Judo or wrestling for the ground. I currently train in Karate and BJJ.

Because it's part of culture and sometimes religion. Karate isn't a fighting art really it's a defense art. The Okinawan's had to defend themselves from the Japanese samurai and weren't even allowed to own weapons (swords) which is why all of the weapons in Karate are FARMING implements.

Karate can be very effective in mma when the fighter knows how to incorporate it into a fight well. I took karate as a kid, and although I was too young for it to teach how to fight, but I started training mma as am adult and it gave me the flexibility and rusty remnants of techniques of kicks. MMA gave me the mindset to be able to incorporate my kicks into a fight

Universal Kombat because wing Chun is designed for SELF-DEFENSE in street fights. People who learn wing Chun don’t get to use most of it in the cage where there are rules and regulations. And besides, martial arts don’t win fights, Martial ARTISTS do. I think “typically” is an overstatement in your case. Remember McGregor vs Alvarez(wrestler)? Or that time when Barboza landed a perfect knee on a wrestler when he attempted takedown?

As a karate teacher, I must say. When you teach very few will get to such a level and not all of them will be willing to compete in such events. I think most karate Dojo's don't aim to MMA! I aim to teach people so if they choose they can be better, physically, mentally and of course in aspects of self defense and more! The better you get the more you can give others!

The problem with most karate dojos is the new fighting style for points, I used to train shotokan, people destroyed the art for the sport
@dimitristripakis7364
@dimitristripakis7364 5 жыл бұрын
@@ColdCrawler What do you mean destroyed the art ? I just took my 6 year old daughter to karate class. She loves it and when I go pick her up she always complains that she wants to stay more. We practice together at home and we even drew the karate kid bonsai logo on the wall of our living room (she has not seen the movie, she just likes it). Now, if she grows up with karate and wants to join a sport tournament, then by all means I will encourage her. But if it was UFC style, there is no way I would encourage her, and possibly not even allow her to participate. What I mean is that some people have families and children and you should take them into consideration when speaking about karate. Unless you imply that karate is not for me and my daughter, but only for life or death situations. In that case, wait until you have a family (which I know you don't currently, from the hot tempered attitude of your comment), and then perhaps you will feel grateful for karate as a sport, like I do.

@EliEffasy Sensei, karate is valuable for children aged 6 - 16. Teaching them is a great contribution to your community. I am a high school teacher for 14 years now (computer science), and I can assure you that karate represents many values that especially today children need, with their iPhones and their know-it-all-because-I-can-Google-it attitude.

@@ColdCrawler , it's very possible to have a dojo that emphasizes sparring as well as the other aspects. My dojo back at home in Atlanta, GA has classes for kids, and for adults. In the adult class we always spar at the end or it. However, we still focus on tradition with Kihon and kata as well.

I knew this time would happen. My BJJ insructor did not believe me when I told him that it would. He would not allow me to teach any Karate techniques when I taught striking at the kid's classes, only BJJ striking which is truly atrocious. I left his school as a brown belt in BJJ because of that closed minded thinking of his. But I don't think pure Karate guys should get too big a head just yet. And I disagree that MMA has come full circle as a commenter has stated. These Karate ka are no longer pure Karate stylists but now they are truly MMA stylists who's striking base is Karate. And also their Karate striking has evolved as well by adding in Boxing and Muay Thai techniques. A good example of this is Conor McGregor. Even Lyoto has changed his striking with boxing and Muay Thai and he preferred to use his other knowledge of Sumo and BJJ to handle the grappling situations. If you are just a pure Karate stylist you will do only so well against weaker opposition. But when you face better rounded fighters, pure Karate stylists will still be at a true disadvantage. Several KI level strikers lost their MMA debuts because they taught their striking would be enough but it wasn't. And the ones who realized that and became more well rounded are now destroyers.

U WOT M8 - Absolutely agree Karate is a valuable. art and brings a unique set of skills to MMA as I asserted to in my comment . Just trying to balance things out here. Karate Ka also have to realize they have to change and become more HYBRID. They will no longer be Pure Karate ka. Karate by itself will not be able to compete in MMA at the higher levels.Same goes for Judo, Wushu, Wrestling, Boxing etc, etc.

Striking styles are still valuable even in today's mma. When a striking oriented fighter learns enough grappling to avoid takedowns or to be able to get back to their feet they are often difficult for the grappling oriented fighters to beat. So work on your punching and kicking skills.

Try to find a good dojo first. Style doesn't matter if it taught wrong. My advice - find a good teacher. If he talks more about belt ranks and promises you a black belt in near future go out from here. I mean don't stick in mcdojo. Karate is not easy art - to master it you to invest time. However, if you want to pick up a style I recommend you shotakan(light contact karate) or kyokushin(full contact karate). both styles are valid. both have pros and cons. I am kyokushin practitioner. Goodluck and sorry for my english.
