I just started Kyokushin recently, and one trick I found to help me remember the steps of these Kata is this: Every 90 degree turn is to the left. Every 180 degree turn is to the right. Every 270 degree turn is to the left. If you can keep that in mind, then all that's left is remember the order of the turns and of course, when the three chudan punches come.

...This is kyokushin, a style known more for raw power than for elegant kata. There are other karate styles, like Goju and Uechi Ryu, that have more intricate kata due to their roots in kungfu. Uechi Ryu, is arguably the one karate style resembling kungfu the most, as it is the only known surviving rendition of Pangai-noon kungfu. I love karate, but the fact that it has roots in kungfu shows there is value in both styles. The history of the two are more connected than people want to admit.

When I did kyokushin I was told to step straight forward (no shimmy) so that I couldn't be tripped while my feet were together in mid-shimmy. In shotokan I'm told to shimmy so I don't get kicked in the groin mid-step. I know I'd rather be on the floor coz I was tripped rather than being booted in the groin lol. There may be other reasons but that was the one I was told. Good luck in your training

The style I take we stomp into the floor with each step. This looks so much easier than what I have to do at the dojo

this is very helpful for review. our style varies slightly but the basics are here. I'm curious why everyone is SO critical... there are different styles, different abilities, different ideas, but all from the same origin. why can't we all just get along? :-)

Shadow Knight - Road to 100k subs Yellow after 2-3 months of being orange, and then in only about 3 months you're going to try for green? sorry but, what federation are you from? I do kyokushin karate for IKOK SOSAI, and next week I'll try for yellow... and for what I know, you have to be blue for at least 1 year, before trying for yellow, and that's if you trained hard that whole year... and the color system is : white -> orange -> blue -> yellow -> green, etc. (not like traditional karate color system). What federation or system are you in, if I may ask?

This is for a group of people attacking you at once. You'll notice everytime this person turns, he blocks his groin and mid area so they don't strike him as he transitions from person to person. He is doing a sequence of blocking and punching mainly to nose area. Please note this is also the first kata in karate, and so this is a basic structure to remember if you suddenly get caught in a group of people. You can deviate and do different moves and blocks where necessary in a real life situation.

Are the individual positions of the kata designed to fend off a specific type of attack? Because the chance of somebody attacking you in such a way that you'd have to defend yourself in exactly this sequence is practically zero.

@fightluv Sir From 1910CE-1945CE what is now North & South Korea was the province of Chosen of the Japanese Empire. The Korean native Martial Arts were subdued and the Japanese Martial Arts were given focus throughout the province of Chosen. During the 1950s Gen. Hi would come up with Tae Kwon Do. The Ryukyu Te/Okinawan Karate had only been in mainland Japan since the 1930s (Okinawan 1st prefectual time period was 1879CE-1945CE). So, there is truth in your statement, so I believe. Osu

Yeah, kung fu tends to take the cerebral approach to fighting. But karate was originally designed to be more linear and to the point. Body type and terrain tend to play into it as well. Okinawans were stockier than most Chinese and Japanese, and many worked near the ocean, so they used more upper body techniques and rooted stances. This led to simpler techniques. Besides, why should karate try to be like Shaolin? They're just two different approaches to combat, neither is right or wrong.

To all the know-nothing, boorish posters who declare - as if it were some major discovery - that "this isn't realistic," I respond: neither is hitting a speed bag in boxing. Just like hitting the speed bag, the kata (unless it is tied directly to its applications, which exist and are modified) practice all kinds of things you need in combat, including balance, dexterity, speed, timing, focus, footwork, and so on. Kyokushin is one of the most respected martial arts in the world. For good reason.
