There are a ton of myths in martial arts these days like.. You can k*** somebody by palm heel striking the nose into the brain.. what. Or that if you're a black belt you have to get your hands and feet registered as deadly weapons.. malarkey. Or that Frank Dux was legit! Bloodsport mostly.
Anyway, heres my take on these martial arts myths!

@@seppokangas1488 this is definitely a thing. It has even resulted in some unfortunate cases e.g. where a professional boxer in the UK killed a person with a single punch to the head, and their defence of self defence was rejected on the grounds that they were especially skilled and experienced at punching, so they should know better to be able to use a more appropriate amount of punching force to defend themselves without killing someone. The boxer's defence was, "that's the only way I know how to punch" and he honestly didn't think he hit him that hard. The boxer was charged with manslaughter.

The myth of the monks comes primarily from the fact that the monks did at one point in history serve as a military force and a pretty well respected one at that. The problem is that the shoalin of that period is not the same shoalin as today, shoalin has been destoryed like 8 time and with each reconstruction the monastery has changed. Today shoalin is largely just a church within extremely successful performing arts branch.

The thing that the old shaolin monks knew that other warriors of the time period didn't know, is how to develop strength and power progressively. Now every athlete in every sport knows these principles so shaolin kung fu is nothing special
@unmessable12
@unmessable12 2 жыл бұрын
@@taintwasher3703 I mean also when he says they were a military force in the past, they were, well, a military force. What made "Shaolin Kung Fu" special is that they fought in formation with spears, armor, and all of the tactics and tools one would expect of a military force of their day, which they did not gain through buddhism or meditation, but through Yu Dayou and related generals going there to train them in this. There is basically no evidence that the Shaolin temple gained its reputation via empty hand pugilistic dueling, which is itself a pretty western concept to tell the truth and with the exception of wrestling wasn't too much of a thing in China at least compared with Europe. They were likely skilled wrestlers to some extent as wrestling was long considered the foundation of learning the art of war in China (wrestling in this context including integrated striking and whatnot) but they weren't flying through the air with 9 section chain whips doing double butterfly twists or anything like that.

In south east Asia monks served as teachers. I’m sure China wasn’t different. Monks don’t fight wars though that’s the dumbest thing I’ve read today. They would have to disobey the Buddhist precepts and leave monkhood and then they wouldn’t be be a monk anymore.

My favorite myth is specifically in Frank Dux's Kumite interview with black belt magazine. While it's hard to pick just one story, I've got to go with his incredibly petty aside that the judo guys and wrestlers were the first ones defeated. He said they weren't ready for people pulling their hair and raking their eyes, because they trained for sports and not fighting. It's the only shot he takes at a specific style in the whole article and it makes me think he was long nursing a bruised ego from being tossed around at a judo gym in the distant past.

@@QuiplashWhiplashWalker Yes you learn under the specific rule set. That’s true. However what you are learning directly correlates to actual fighting. If you do boxing or wrestling and train that let’s say for several months, you can actually use it as it, as it is in a fight without the specific rule set. Throwing fists or grappling is the basics of fighting. How else you gonna fight somebody? You don’t even need martial arts training fighting somebody but it definitely helps.

One of the more damaging myths surrounding combat is that being attacked in "da streetz" plays out like some kind of choreographed fight scene. I help teach a self defense class and every semester there is at least one student who, when asked how she'd react to being grabbed by a stranger, replies with a multi-step kung-fu series of attacks. Of course, it completely falls apart once the "attacker" makes even the slightest resistance. Also, not really a myth, but if all the kids I went to school with who said they were black belts were actually black belts, I think I might have grown up in the Matrix.

The vast majority of situations where you have to defend yourself are not sparrings, just threatening. On these situations, your two best bets are avoiding fight (deescalation, giving agressor what he want if he just want your wallet and is armed, etc.) or playing easy prey and attacking him when he is offguard... and there is where having some goods techniques make sense (well, I agree that there is still a lot of bullshit teached here) Of course, there is still some situations where sparring is unavoidable, and if you miss your first attack, it will become kind of sparring. I was once accosted by someone who grabbed my collars by both hands who meant to intimidate me like the big, macho guy he thought he was. Effectively an uppercut, but with the palm instead of the knuckles.

We use the same technique in Muay Thai to break the clinch. It’s more natural than using the fist. We don’t strike with it but simply pushing someone’s head up with the palm is enough to ruin their posture. I learned the palm strike in TKD and I would still use it in a self defense situation because I’m a guitarist too and don’t want to break my fists. Palm strikes work.

I guess my favorite MA myth is the size/weight related one. Otoh I am a sizeable person, and I know the luxuries it affords me in melee combat, but I also know how much more damage one can do with the proper technique and end a fight quickly (though rarely with a single maneuver). One reason why humans made it in the first place is the fact that better technique and technology beats more strength every day, but you're not going to wrestle a bear or an elephant and expect to win - or even survive - because there are orders of magnitude in Strength that no human can realistically bridge with technique. That's why we use guns to defend ourselves against big animals...

In fairness in England if you do any training in martial arts or boxing then your hands and feet are classified legally as "lethal weapons". You don't have to register them with any organisation but if you get in to a fight and you hit someone legally it automatically goes from a simple "assault" charge to "assault with intent" and "assault with a weapon". Though England has many, many stupid and illogical laws and in a country with absolutely no "castle law" or "stand your ground law" its the least of the English people's worries. Imagine a country in which if someone attacks you (even if they are breaking in to your home at the time) and you harm them in self defense YOU have committed a crime. Insane but true

Another great video Seth, thank you! Another great myth is to ‘just kick ‘em in the nuts’ or ‘gouge the eyes’. Sure, it hurts, but it’s only going to piss off the attacker more. Plus they can kick and gouge back.

Using energy to block attacks. That’s my favorite crazy myth, Seth.

My favorite myth is probably the weapon registration one. I loved when they brought it up in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood lol

Thanks for providing a look at the official deadly hands and feet registration form. While my left hand and right foot aren't quite to the level of lethal my "other" certainly is.

Funny thing about the palm strike to nose thing though, there's a layer of bone separating the brain from the eyeball so even if you break the nose bone, it's just gonna be like a screw came off inside your electronics

Heard the myth about sidekicks. They don't even work! Nice Video.

Fantastic video! I feel super foolish for going along with the smeller going into the thinker myth. Some TKD schools still swear by this idea too along with several of those other myths.
