Most of this comment section’s ignorance about fencing, my fav sport in the world, is making me want to bash my head into a cactus. “All you have to do is stab!” And “you don’t need any coordination at all!” These are all completely incorrect. As a competitive fencer, you need a lot of coordination. And even though we aren’t using multiple limbs, it still requires aim and timing. Fencing is a beautiful sport, and before you comment, know some things. Thank you.

Haha thats how I feel about Equestrian. People don’t understand! You don’t just ‘sit’ there. You need so much skill. The equestrians make it look so easy when in reality... they’ve spent their whole lives training. And for fencing you don’t just stab.

This was pretty interesting. I think chess is a serviceable metaphor for both of these sports, but I don't think it's the best one. I heard a quote attributed to philosopher Carl von Clausewitz that went something like, "People compare war to chess, but it is far more like cards." This was meant to say that the chaos and randomness of war is more akin to the strategic decision-making under uncertain conditions seen in games like poker. This kind of strategy is based on probability more than logic. Sports like Karate and fencing involve speed that makes truly logical decision-making difficult. Things happen more dynamically and chaotically. People often perform attacks, defenses and counters based on the likelihood of an opponent's reaction happening, rather than actually seeing it and then deciding how to respond. For this reason I think these sports, along with most weapons sports (Kendo, HEMA, etc.) as well as most striking combat sports (boxing, kick-boxing, etc.) are more analogous to cards, while something like Brazilian jiu-jitsu, which involves slower, less dynamic engages which permit better moment-to-moment logical decision-making, is more like chess.

@3cheersforidiots
@3cheersforidiots 4 жыл бұрын
If you block an attack in kumite, it doesn't score. The reason why you're seeing a lot of scores in professional kumite competitions is probably because the karateka there are doing a lot of compound attacks that are difficult to block. In essence, though, there are some criteria for scoring a hit in kumite, including having the correct form, the correct distance, zanshin or kime (usually demonstrated by a kiai), controlling the movement, and also actually hitting the opponent on a valid target area. The only exception to this last criterion is with junior kumite competitions, where a punch to the face cannot actually touch the opponent, but has to be a couple millimetres away to demonstrate control and to protect against injuries. Hope that answers the question!

sorry! i thought you were sarcastic. for landing kicks and punches you need much better body coordination than to -i don't know the word-stab???someone with sabre??? and thats just about offence.deffence in karate is much more difficult-thinking about punches, kicks and potencialy getting ko-ed, while in fencing there is not even painful being stabed.karate is not just physically harder but is also psychologicly harder.and last thing is tehnique thowing a simple step in jab is harder tehnique too learn than step in stab with sabre because if you look step in jab and step in "stab" they are very similiar.stab is just little shorter move because you don't have to generate that much power there for easier.i could write an argument about timing too...
