I started martial arts because I wanted to be like Goku but then when I began Goju Ryu, I gained more than I thought and became more confident without knowing it. Took time off because of university but I recently got my shodan black belt. It’s a passion for me

My friends and I (in high school) were totally into the ninja craze of the '80s, and we watched SOO many martial arts movies! So I had a real interest in martial arts. Plus, as a child and in school, I was never an athlete. Always a bit of a wimp. So, during my first or second year of college my friend says "Hey I found a school that I want to check out. Let's go." Turns out it's right in the neighborhood where we both lived, and it's a karate school. We went and watched a class and we can tell theses guys are for real. Not a McDojo. So we signed up, and 35+ years later, I'm still in the same style (though only like 25 years of actual training time; life happens). The instructor changed; one of the black belts took it over when the original instructor had to quit, and we lost that dojo along the way, but we're still cranking it out in my sensei's garage. I haven't really done much in terms of other styles, as you might have guessed, but we do kobudo along with the karate, and for just a bit, because the opportunity arose, I took some classes in naginata. I thought it would be much the same as bo, but I was TOTALLY wrong. Everything I learned in bo practice was not only useless, but actually a hindrance in naginata. Completely different kind of movements altogether. I only did that for about a year, though and I can't recall why I quit.

It was kind of a back thought to me since I was a kid, but after a project at work kind of drained me more than I anticipated, I really started looking into getting more fit. Along with my younger desire to get into a martial art, I had started watching Cobra Kai at the time which pushed me into finding a school. Once I learned what style the CK dojo was using, I found a dojang near me for Tang Soo Do. I have not stopped going since then.

I started practicing martial arts when I was very young, when I was 5 or 6 years old. I did Tai Chi. But I only thought about playing, not following the training guidelines. Then at the age of 10 I did a few months of Kyokushin Karate. I left because the training was too hard for me at the time. I finally started practicing judo when I was 14 and it was the martial art that I identified with the most. Then I also started practicing jiu-jitsu as a way to complement it.

I started karate aged 17. Two years prior I boxed. I was bullied badly at school and was looking for self defence. I was inspired by Bruce Tegner books. The Karate kid, Chuck Norris, Steven Seagal. Later Lone Wolf and Cub. And Toshiro Mifune films, 2003 remake of Zatoichi, TMNT. Masters of the Universe, ThunderCats, Conan. What kept me there? I simply wanted to be the best person that I possibly could be and be the best martial artist could be and watching a documentary called the warrior within and something about Bruce Lee " If he was better thlan the next guy because worked harder than the next guy" The martial arts changed my life and wanted to continue on this path and want to spread the positive aspects of it as much as I am able to. As stated I started in boxing intimated I trained Renbukan karate and then Shito Ryu which became my core for many years. Cross trained in Aikido, Judo, Muso Jikiden Enshin Ryu. But I was only collecting dots for what I was chasing. Fortunately I met Hanshi McCarthy who not only connected the dots but also gave me the picture of being a complete me martial artist.

A theme I notice when karate masters are teaching about power generation or technique, they always use the naihanchi shodan kata. Like the dangerous shorinji ryu sensei teaching his way of blocking, the Shogen ryu senseis demonstrating using the "tanden" and relaxation in techniques, and here, Kikuno sensei showing off his way of hitting people hard without telegraphing. It's quite interesting! Naihanchi is pretty simple to do, but it seems like it takes a couple of lifetimes to truly master it.

I grew up in a house of Psychological and Physical abuses.. as well as suffered from physical bullying at the Apartment complex, on the school bus, and at school. That said, I was not able to take up martial arts, until the age of 20... as I have came from both poverty, and circumstantial chaos. I always loved the idea of martial arts, and really wanted to learn, since I was very young... I found a VHS rental place near my house, and they had a large selection of ancient 60/70s era Kung Fu movies. I started watching them regularly... and finding the Ancient Chinese way of life, and martial arts... as being very interesting, and very appealing to me. This eventually lead me to thinking about finally taking up the arts... It was then that I started to ask the question.. Which art should I study? And from this question, I would ask myself things like "Whom are the greatest fighters, of all time?". Bruce Lee's name kept coming up... and so I watched all of his films, as well as watched a few Documentary's on him.. and later would buy + read all of his books. One thing that was mentioned in the Documentary, was that Lee had learned a rare Chinese art called Wing Chun. I thought to myself... if Lee had only learned a small bit of Wing Chun... and Lee became so famous for his Skills... then that is where I wanted to start out... The question would then be... Is there any Wing Chun schools around? As luck would have it... In fact, there was a very large Wing Chun school, in my area. At that time, it was one of the largest schools in the USA... and was ran by Steve Lee Swift. Swift used to be a Karate teacher, actually. He started learning and practicing Karate, when he was a little boy. I believe his family moved around a lot, and so when he ended up in Hong Kong... he managed to discover Wing Chun, and fell in love with the art. He has spent many years over there, learning and mastering the Art. In fact, I witnessed Swift speaking Fluent Cantonese over the phone, in his school... with someone over in China. Anyway... I was quite surprised to find a Wing Chun school... as back then... Wing Chun was still quite Rare to see, Especially in the USA. But what sealed the deal for me... was his Demonstrations. He was lightning fast with his combinations of movements.. and he was also incredibly powerful. The interesting thing about Swift, was that he seemed annoyed by the mere mention of Bruce Lee. I would eventually realize why this was... as Lee never really finished learning Wing Chun, and sort of gave the art a bit of a bad reputation... due to making various mistakes in its usage. I had visited a few other schools before finding Swifts classes, but none of them impressed me like Swifts demos... so I signed up for classes. The thing I learned from watching the old Chinese films... was that many of these guys started training as young as 3 years old. I thought to myself... "How am I supposed to be able to Catch up, to someone that started so young?!". And the thing is... I had felt that I had been Unfairly, "Held Back" ,due to my poverty levels, and other issues. As such, the only thing I could come up with... was that I might be able to catch up, if I work 5 times as long, and 10 times as Hard / Intense. As such, I was taking every Class that was available. Often taking both the Day, and Night classes (when I wasnt working in the day). His classes were 2hrs long, and one of those hours contained a Hardcore "Core" workout Routine. I was also biking +20 minutes to each class and back. As such, I started to get in amazing shape... and quite quickly. I was also training every single day, for several hours... outside of classes. About 1 year into my training, I started to spar against other artists, from other schools. A lot of the local schools have days where there are Open-Sparring sessions, for any martial artist, to participate in. I would eventually learn other arts methods, and cross train in their various techniques.. such as the high/spin kicks of TKD, Muay Thai, and Northen Shaolin / Wushu. I also started training in Shaolin "Iron Body" conditioning routines, to toughen up every part of my body. I also learned boxing strikes, as well as some Tai Chi, and Shaolin Longfist methods. Of course, before taking up the arts... I had previously done daily 1hr meditation sessions... as well as learned and developed Yogic Breathing methods. Both of which would only further Elevate my own Martial Arts abilities. As these technologies USED to be taught in all Chinese combat arts... but due to modern Corruptions... its rare to find modern teachers, that teach the Meditation developments, nor the PROPER "Combat Breath" developments. I was able to figure out the missing elements, due to my former meditation + breath training. Eventually, I met so many artists, that I was able to start a private sparring group. We probably had at least 15 different artists show up, to cross train + spar against each other... every Weekend. Many of these fighters competed regularly. And a few of them were Masterclass level fighters... that even FAR outclassed myself. Along all of this, I had build a training Dojo + Custom made training devices, in the Attic of where I was living. I would train up there, as well as have other artists over to train, spar, cross train..etc. I ended up with a few private students, and we all would train up there. Teaching others, made me even more aware + more skilled. I also got in even better shape, than before. Over the course of many decades, I had attended 3 different Wing Chun schools... as a lot of these teachers would end up moving out of the state, or would quit teaching, for various reasons. Each time, I would have to start over from the beginning. While this was annoying and disappointing, it also would allow me to get to a level of functional capabilities, that most WC practitioners were never able to attain... because I was forced to fully MASTER the Root foundations of the Art. Also, because each of these teachers came from different Lineages, I was able to see each difference in methods... and was able to learn + test each method... allowing me to rediscover things that were lost / misunderstood / corrupted. Eventually I had attained Masterclass levels, within every one of my techs / capabilities. This included Lethal levels of Short Range power generation. Not long after this point, I stopped sparring, and eventually got too busy to train + shifted my focus on other Hobbies. As once you are Masterclass level... other fighters tend to get injured, even when you are trying your best to respond as "kindly" as possible. It was also at that point, that I had done nothing but martial arts, for many years... and I felt I more than reached my main Goal.. of being capable of Realistically being able to Defend myself, and my potential loved ones. I will also add, that before all of this... I was weak, under-weight, and clumsy / uncoordinated. I was the kid that used to get picked LAST in Gym classes... and for good reasons. Yet years later, after all of this daily training + daily workouts... I was lightning fast, graceful as a Cat, Tough as Iron, and powerful as a Wrecking ball. It built up a whole other level of inner peace and confidence... as I no longer feared any man, within my presence... no matter how large, nor how strong that they were. I put on many pounds of Bone and Tissue Density.. including some decent dedicated muscle. I became extremely Fit, and developed a level of Internal Strength, that has helped me in all areas of my life, and jobs.... such as being able to move 450 lb arcade machines, up and down staircases, all by myself (on a dolly, of course). While I eventually ceased training... I have always continued to research and learn even more about all of the different artforms. The more open my mind became.. the more I would learn and grow. And the more I would discover lost technology, as well as shared technology, between all of these arts. I also learned the hard way... that we always tend to be our own worst enemies.

I started taekwondo when I was 16. Did it couple of years, then half year of boxing . Went to military ( martial art in it's own right ) like almost all boys go here. After military , did aikido for a while, but then stopped all martial arts training for 10 years. Then I had this terrific call to do martial arts again, tried several arts but nothing resonated. Then discovered Haedong Kumdo and did it for couple of years. When covid hit, I moved to my original area and started taekwondo again at my old school. Now have been doing that for several years, then started Scandinavian Defendo ( a kind of krav maga in Finnish style ) , aikido, and Shorinji-ryu karate . Also tstarted kombatan, (stick fighting system ) , hapkido and capoeira but don't seem to find time for these anymore..

I started practicing Shorin-ryu karate when I was very young. I didn't know that's what it was at the time though, my mom just had me take it so I could defend myself at school. I went to a rough school where the teachers didn't deal with fights, they just let them happen, and I've always been skinny. In highschool, I started doing Historical European Martial Arts through Joachim Meyer's longsword. Now, I teach HEMA at Oklahoma State University. I also teach catch wrestling, which I've done on and off over the years but started doing regularly maybe 2 years ago. I try to take classes in every martial art I can if I have the time to. I've taken BJJ classes, a capoeira class, a lot of different sword classes, and a couple boxing classes so far.

I moved to a new neighborhood in New Jersey & the older children were bullying me, so my dad first taught me he studied Isshin Ryu under Frugé in Louisiana. My dad's friend mr Shawn wanted to teach me since I was interested; he taught Moy Yat Wing Chun, Inosanto Kali. Mr Archie was a PTK practioner. Basically private lessons of Wing Chun & FMA were my first martial arts besides my dad. I had a neighbor mr Vaughn who was a firefighter & Kenpo instructor who also knew Veejitsu & Sanuce Ryu, but I didn't train under him, but his son would come over to spar & cross train with me. The first martial art I went to a dojo to learn was Judo & Jinmukai International. These are still my foundational martial arts skills. I still have Katana, Kodachi, Jo, Bo, Boken, Shinai, Baton, and Judo Gi.

Initially I did Shorin-Ryu Karate as a young teenager, don't remember why I gave it up, probably due to playing lots of sports. For about a year now, I have been training Itosu-Ryu Karate. The reason I got back into it was my wife and I wanted to put our 3 children into a Martial Art. We found a great dojo nearby and I figured since I was already there for them, I may as well join. So I suppose wanting my children to grow up with discipline, strength, and confidence was the reason I got back into it.
