Tonfa is probably the one I feel the most connection to, but the shield and spear would be cool to try out.

1 - Throat is my main target 2 - Sai would be a nice weapon to try 3 - I never did Kobudo :( but it would be Bo

1) How to gripping the weapon, trajectory and target. 2) I practice Matayoshi Kobudo, but never tried Tinbe + Ronshin (I hope try it soon!, its an advanced weapon). 3) Bo and Sai, for me, Tunkuwa is the most difficult, maybe nunchaku too.

I've never done kobudo (nor anything similar), but when I practice kicks I usually aim to the temples, but of course, it depends on many factors (distance, the height of the opponent, its position, etc). If I ever get to practice some form of kobudo, surely the bo would be my first option.

When it comes to aiming an attack, i tend to focus more on the body since it’s a larger target to hit When I get to do it for the first time, I think I would try out the nunchaku and the eku Of the kobudo weapons, I would say that the Bo and the nunchaku would be my favorite based on what I’ve seen

We do the same in aikido. I learned that we aim at the eye so the opponent cant see the exact length of the staff. Same thing with a sword. Also the best way to aim when striking with the staff is to not look where you are hitting. It might sound weird, but your aim will be much better if you just look straight at the opponent instead. If you do it this way, your aim will have be precise to the centimeter (or even less) level.

Thank you for this video, Sensei. I was taught to strike the collar bones/ neck, overhead, below like an uppercut to the groin, elbow and knees, and to thrust and twist forward it backwards into the opponent essentially to loosen their grip if they managed to grasp my weapon. There is just so much to learn concerning the Bo. 😅

@3:26 you have the perfect holding position. When all your opponents can see is a “dot” end of the bo it’s is a very big advantage. It gives you the option for thrust or strike. It’s too bad we don’t have competitive BO a kumi bo training with full kendo gear. I would love to train like that

The first Bo lesson that I remember was in the late ‘70s. The Sensei was, more or less, a contemporary of mine, but had continued to train when I stopped for a while as I had a family and had started my career. He was a talented Shodan and I was still San Kyu. Anyway, we were doing a Shotokan Kata (can’t remember which one) which he said had originally been a Bo Kata. At some point, we were supposed to do a Jodan attack, but he didn’t specify the target. After a couple of repetitions, he came by to watch me. My attack was to my opponent’s collar bone. The Sensei stopped the class and said, “Don is attacking the collar bone. Don’s a Probation Officer, everyone attack the collar bone!” LOL I have NO idea if this was the proper target, but since I was a Probation Officer, everyone had to do it my way. Still makes me laugh!

I maybe not in karate but on kali. we have a similar weapon called bankaw, the basics taught to me are similar to this without the extending thrusts. I came across this video randomly and appreciated the details explained by Shimabukuro sensei on how to handle the Bo. will integrate it on my training. thank you

Great master, great lesson, great video! My favorite Kobudo weapon is Kun (Bo), because it is called "The Father of All Weapons". Also, I use another weapon from Eskrima, Filipino Martial Art, as my favorite: Yantok (baston, generally 26 inches in length).

I would like to try out the Kamas. Ninjutsu used a Kusarigama which is one Kama with a long metal chain at the end. I’d like to feel these out! I like this lesson, again a very different point of view for the Bo. But I love the reason, quick deflect and strike with utilizing both sides. As blocks and attacks. Cant wait for the kata! 🥷

What's interesting is that there is an old photo of either Funakoshi or one of his early students training with the bo. So at the very least the bo was taught in shotokan early on. But for whatever reasons it was removed from most groups curriculum all together.

aiming an attack. i dont think consciously about it , its all subconscious . But if i had to put into words i dont activly track anything in sight. its all tracked in my head this allows me a very real world application of spidey sense . it also is great when they try to deceive you or do a change up . i dont ever fall for any of it becuase im not tunnel visioned on SEEing what my opponent is doing. things like the environment around me tracking individuals in 3d to predict their tactics . psychology also plays a big part. what would be the easiest thing for them to do? whats do they Tend to do in these situations? . what would a predator do in this situation ? see way to much to actively think about it! but subconsciously its easy once u practice it enough it becomes second nature. in sports we're always told to keep eye on the ball. but in a fight that gets you in trouble. like how sensei tells you to point the bo at the eye ball . its because we want to track the dangerous thing i front of us . its easy to fool people that way.

Please, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that kobudo related to the several ryu of martial arts prior to the Meiji era, as opposed to gendai budo. But it seems that, in the context of karate, kobudo means weapons training. Is that so?
@danilodibujo
@danilodibujo 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. I was told that Kobudo means "old martial art", it has diferent meanings in mainland Japan and in Okinawa (where it refers to the use of traditional weapons). Maybe a japanese or okinawan can give you an accurate answer.
@jamesfrankiewicz5768
@jamesfrankiewicz5768 3 жыл бұрын
The term for old martial arts of mainland Japan is "koryū bujutsu" (lit. "old stream martial arts"), often just shortened to "koryū". Some koryū schools are dedicated to a single weapon (be it sword, spear, bow, gun, etc.), while others include a wide variety of weapons, yet others may focus on jūjutsu (a.k.a. "yawara", "taijutsu", "kogusoku") and/or kenpō ("fist method") but these last usually tightly integrate daggers or other small weapons into their methods.

Hello; may be because if the guns are legal they can search if there are some one killed but nothing to follow with a nunchaku
@Burvedys
@Burvedys 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheReverb1 : actually, the answer is two-fold. One is a cultural and historical ("everybody's kungfu-fighting" during late 80s and early 90s when street crime was high) that deems a huge article on it. And another one is more of a legal concern when any object might be a legal prop-tool as a weapon for self-defense to inflict reasonable damage and harm (actus reus) unless it supposes evil intent to prepare that weapon before it is used, means mens rea. And a crime must have both actus reus and mens rea, hence you may grab a frail and defend yourself being an Okinawan peasant working on some grain but it's not a case in Lithuania, methinks. :) Same way it would be illegal to carry a sharpened screw-driver etc.
