I'm gonna make a suggestion that's a bit out of your usual wheelhouse. Check out a mathcore band from Philly called Kaonashi. I recommend checking out either an older song called "Why Did You Do It?" or a newer song called "I Hate The Sound of Car Keys". You'll have a lot to talk about for either song, but the first song has more variation in vocal style while the second is heavier musically. Peter is a very unique vocalist and honestly he's an acquired taste, but I personally really like his sound and think his delivery and lyricism fits well with the rest of the band.

When your talking about how they do it I think it comes down to simple is better, alot of bands make songs over complex which can be easier to screw up or sound off. I think they also use a lot of "space" in there songs to create an atmosphere. Imo kublai khan is brilliant and they have genuine musical theory.
