Backstory on the TX, an old Thrash Band from MN was called Kublai Khan, and got mad that these guys were using the name (despite the thrash band only vocalizing their anger after the release of Absolute), so Kublai Khan TX added the TX for legal reasons.

It was also an easy transition to the TX at the end because all their social media already had TX at the time. Super easy for them to add only two letters and call it a day.

Oh dude, Matt Honeycutt has some of my favorite vocals of all time. Saw them live recently with The Acacia Strain and they tore shit up like always. He's the perfect balance of grit, anger, and understandability. Also, matt didn't use to, but when he plays live now, he drops a lot of the true chord phonation from his screams. I think that was a good decision for him, because now it means we will get many more years of this sick ass sound without much trouble.

Lotta vocalists actually sound way voicer on the albums than live. Sam carter as an example. It’s not only the safety thing, but also the consequence of many vocal layers in the mix, many of which are cleans or almost cleans

@@angryktulhu I think Sam puts more true voice in his live vocals than Matt does these days, but yeah I know what you're talking about. Saw The Acacia Strain recently too and Vincent didn't do many of his pitched vocals like in the chorus of Beast. Some vocalists do pull it off though. Saw Fit For An Autopsy on this past tour and Joe Bad sounds literally exactly the same live, dude was incredible.

Songs like these are what make me love Kublai Khan so much, so strong hitting musically, but most importantly emotionally to both the listener AND the vocalist. To me their album Balancing Survival & Happiness is what shines a light to themes like this one. I really recommend you give that album a look as there’s various themes like this that really hit hard in both how Matt feels during each song - and how you, the listener feels once you get what it’s about. Probably the songs that stand out to me the most are The Guilty Dog, Balancing Survival & Happiness, and Ghost Pains Pt. III especially. Very fucking heavy songs especially emotionally

Hi, in Minnesota 1984, a different band had formed named Kublai Khan, who played Thrash Metal. Later, in Sherman Texas, a completely separate set of musicians formed a Heavy Hardcore band and, inspired by the name Kublai Khan, which they came upon in a poem, chose it as their band name. Eventually, the Sherman Texas band learned that there had already been an '80s Minnesota band named Kublai Khan. So, the Texas band from that point on called themselves Kublai Khan TX (said "Kublai Khan Tee Ex").

So I knew how Scott was reaching his vocals just cause that's how I've always naturally done it. I've been trying to practice Matt's for a month now and had no idea up until now how it was done. I was able to replicate it but it's very limited. It's so difficult to mix the distortion in and I can tell I need to build up calluses first.

There is a constant aspect that people (mainly vocal coaches) seem to miss because they get too much into theory and keeping it "safe" and that is the intensity and loudness that gets put into the delivery. I am sure that's the case in Matt's vocals. I grew up listening to extreme bands from grind/ crust waters before the whole "vocal coach" became a thing and my main inspiration was Mark Barney Greenway because I found his vocals to be the most aggressive. When we had rehearsals I almost didn't need to be amped because my growls were so loud, and they were loud in order to get that type of natural vocal distortion. There are certain thing you just can't get with out the maximum push of the diaphragm. But with it you can't hold a long shout, so it's a tradeoff between stamina and power. After all these years in the extreme metal (around 25 years) that method has served me well. Sometimes I do the high scream that cut the throat intentionally for few minutes to agitate the vocals just to get a bit of grit afterwards.

You can’t fake a scream in the mix unless you add an actual distortion plugin. EQ and compression can only alter dynamics and the frequencies to sit better in a mix (adding punch, clarity, reducing muddiness, etc).

I keep thinking the opening to the video is the end of The Outer Wilds' song from the end of its time loop and it messes with me.

i know you are being sure to not be judgemental, but it is important to note that matt blows his voice out very quickly every tour, you can hear him screaming through his lost voice when you watch live shows of theirs. ultimately, thats totally his choice and it sounds sick, but its good for ppl to know that they will almost 100% certainly cause hemselves vocal damage if they follow in his footsteps. still, personal choice!
