@@davidgray1515 Because lots of women get pregnant and don't tell the father. Back in the 80's, it was actually shameful to be single and pregnant, or a teenager and pregnant. Teen could have had the baby, abandoned it and never told the father.

@@davidgray1515 My brother's X did not tell him about the baby they created either, she told him the baby had died while she was pregnant.. 20 plus years later they found each other, what a tragic situation my niece went through some really bad times and in fact even went to the same high school with her half brother that she didn't know was her brother at the time. If the mother has already past away, it is likely that many of her family members her age and older, that were around at the time, are already deceased as well. There might not be anyone left alive with direct information. It's sad, but what can you do?

The child would be 44 years old. If her mother had her young at say, 16, that would have her year of birth as 1964, and she would be 60 today. If her mother had her at 20, the mother would would be 80. Odds are the grandparents are dead.

@@yuelingchu4361I think it’s probably enough for now that they were able to figure out who the identity of the parents were after 40 years. Most of the people involved are probably dead now. And we don’t just know the situation of either of the parents. It must have been pretty desperate for the mother to do something like that. Reporters can only report facts they have been given and considering it’s a cold case from 4 decades ago, it’s remarkable they know anything about it at all.

Difficult to proof it the father knew or not or if he was part of it, sounds like they are pretty sure he's innocent, so no need for anyone to know their names and harass their families.

Oh it's just easier to call the mother a murderer based on *literally no information.* We don't know if the father was lying. We don't know if the woman had a stillbirth and maybe in her psychosis just left the baby there. Maybe the baby was unwanted, she had no way to care for it, and she didn't want the father involved for whatever reason. Maybe she was homeless and couldn't care for a baby on top of that. We have zero information beyond "a baby was found in a ditch and the mother is dead and the father says he had no idea there was a baby" to go off, so it's really gross people are assuming all these things. We don't have enough information to draw any sort of conclusion as to what happened.

Autopsy would at least say how baby died, unless botch job. It is possible the father did not know. Between 77 and 78 i knew 3 girls who had babies and never told him they were pregnant, 2 left the area 1 due to placing baby for adoption thru unwed home for girls. So it does happen more than we know.

It depends on the state of the remains, if it is very little of the remains left (an infant, 45 years in a grave) they cannot tell. You can't tell from an apple core whether or not it was blemished when it was picked off the tree so to speak. Some people misunderstand the word "autopsy", you can have 3 burned bone fragments and still perform an "autopsy" because all it is, is the examination of the remains, whatever is left, no matter how little.

I don’t love abortion, but it’s sort of a lesser of two evils thing again and again. Abortion is preferable to abandonment, birth control is preferable to abortion. It’s frustrating to have people in charge deciding even birth control should be denied. You’d think it would be the ideal solution outside of everyone in the world being suddenly magically able to abstain until they’re ready for kids.

Here in Virginia Beach they came very close to finding the mother of baby hope. They even tracked down a woman that they think either is the mom or knows the mom, but I haven’t heard any progress about the case in many years. Baby hope was found abandoned in the locker room of a Lillian Vernon warehouse in the 90s.

She lived in a home that belonged to a Church & the minister was a woman , the girl was living with the minister because her dad was in prison. Actually I was married when I was 16 and ended up in an abusive relationship had my oldest son at 17 and by the time I was 19 I was a single mother after leaving the abuser after the first time he thought it ok to leave welps on a 17 month old baby his back and legs had handprints! I had to get us both out and did everything to make sure my son was ok!! Working 3 jobs and going without stuff so he didn’t have to!! Do you think I could have just thrown him away?? The way the video showed this it was the mother or someone who knew her and she didn’t stick around to help her baby! She could have told someone after if it was someone else that threw her baby away and she wasn’t dead in all that time and yet she could have said something even if she didn’t want to tell who she was!! No matter what our circumstances are, we have free Will, and there are many who have been in worse situations than I assume this girl was who had made different choices. However, she was raised in. Her family situation is completely completely separate from who she is as a person. And we know who we are by our actions. There was a case with 14-year-old walked into a restaurant and put her newborn in the arms of the first customer she saw and walked away. Certainly, her circumstances weren’t such great shakes, but she had the Will to do better for her baby. Is 16 year-old who abandoned her baby might have been or grown into a good person at heart, but she was weak and cowardly and hopefully she changed as she grew up. Much too late to make a difference. Let’s hold people accountable for their actions

Jump ahead about 2 years I was a single mother without any help from his sperm donor! Not once did I ever think about throwing my child away! The minute I knew I was going to be a mom it wasn’t about me anymore! My job after he was born was to protect and love him! She had several choices but chose the wrong one! Have a blessed day!

I think it’s the Schrodinger cat issue. They can’t prove the baby was alive or had passed when it was left there. If the baby was alive it’s very likely a crime. But they can’t prove that. However the mom has passed and given some speculation it’s been what 40ish years? Her parents are either quite old and may have failing memory or also aren’t alive anymore. At most they’d have to find the mother’s friends and hope they can recall something from around 40+ years ago.

Sad. If only the mother could’ve gotten the help she needed (physical, mental, financial, etc) to have prevented a full-term baby being tossed in a field, but women’s rights and health have never been a priority. Where I live, a baby found 10 years ago was just identified. The mother was 15 at the time of birth and the dad was a 40 year old child r@pist who took the baby “to the hospital” after he made his victim give birth in his apartment. She just thought he gave the baby up for adoption and didn’t know how to get her back, not knowing he killed the baby and threw her in the trash. You also have to remember that in the 80s it was VERY bad if you were a young mother. Nowadays teen pregnancy is treated as an "oh nooo well we'll get through this honey" but back then you were DISOWNED and kicked out by your parents if you got pregnant at 14 or 16 by your boyfriend and you had no intention of marraige. It was very harsh and it caused a LOT of abandoned babies from scared little girls who didnt want to deal with the consequences. Yes adoption is a thing but could you really imagine a 16 year old knowing the process of how to do that? No. Especially with no support system.

The mother of the child has long since passed. The sheriff is convinced the father knew nothing of the child. The deceased baby was found in a roadside ditch. They don't know exactly how the baby died. They didn't say how old the child may have been, a day a week...I watched once and got this much out of it. Hopefully an investigation--of the mother relatives or old friends--will reveal more details but as reported, the case is closed; if mother had anything to do with the baby death, there is no one to arrest.
