I think back then the audience was more concerned with the acting and the work. These days the audience is more concerned with the actors personal lives and character. Her work is made for audiences so she’ll listen to comments and criticism. But if your criticism is only on her character and her personal life then she’s not obligated to listen. Even with laal Singh Chadda. When she said ‘if you don’t like me don’t watch me’ she legit meant if you don’t like ME don’t watch me, cause the criticism was directed at HER not at her FILM. But then she later said you should watch the MOVIE cause it’s a beautiful story etc etc. this had to do with the film and not HER. The audience nowadays has so much hatred for Bollywood that they only see the celebrity and not the character they’re playing. If they like the celebrity they like the roles they play. That’s how it is now. She said ‘you don’t like me so don’t watch me’ to the boycottbollywood people cause they didn’t like HER, they don’t have any criticism about her films or her acting they’re more concerned with nationalism and values and political views. Now obviously she’s going to tell you to fuck off if that’s your point of argument. If your point of argument is about her work and her movie choices etc etc, her reaction will be different. The thing is back then being a celebrity meant you had to be very far fetched and higher than thou and had to brand yourself as so. Which is what her brand was. And so people still believe that that’s who she is, even though it was just a persona she’d adopted as a ‘celebrity’. And nowadays audiences don’t connect with a far fetched image they connect more to someone who’s relatable and similar.
