Let me be the first to offer up my condolenses to Karen Black. I think we all remember the lunch scene from Five Easiest Pieces. She was also in Nashville playing Connie White. Just help me keep from sliding down indeed. Glad I was the first to offer up the sympathy.

This was apparently Altman's sendup to Nashville. But what it ended up was much more. All these talented people, Karen Black, Keith Caradine, etc. And we still love Nashville. Hey, Minnie, yur hat cost lotsa money.

Altman sold himself as an iconoclast/ satirist but he was far deeper than he often admitted

The performances of the lead actors - actors, not musicisans - make this movie much, much more than satire. I've never considered it satire. It may have started out that way but by letting each actor write their own songs and create their characters, it became so much more. And the largely uncredited journeyman musicians of Nashville, who backed up these amateurs not knowing what they were getting into - watch the faces on the band members during Barbara Jean's crackup at the Opry Belle. And then there's Vassar. One brief scene, to be introduced to this fabulous musician. Once you get to know this movie it becomes obvious that Karen Black has only two scenes, both of them on the Saturday Opry night shoot - at the Opry itself and at the King of the Road - she does a total of three songs but none are complete in the film. She's the only one of "the twenty four" not present at the final scene at the Parthenon, and if you listen to the dialog during this very song, Haven will tell you why. She's present in the form of a poster at the airport scene, where most of the 24 gather the first time. Hats off to Richard Basken who made all this music work, and to Ronnie Blakely, who turned in a 300% career performance that was totally believeable and she helped with the songwriting and coaching as well. Yes, she tried to teach Gwen Wells to sing. She was supposed to be bad, but not THAT bad, but she did her best and the sincerity is there even in her strip-show performance. Robert Altman took this loose script, a crazy idea, a rag-tag bunch of actors and a very modest shooting budget and tight schedule on location, and ended up with a 1969 Miracle Mets World Championship film. I love films, and this is still my favorite of all. We just got a nice new 60" TV and Nashville will get a spin on it real soon. It will probably be the 20th for me since the DVD was released, although I probably watched it 9-10 times just in the first year and when I first got the DVD in 2000, I watched it 3 nights in a row by myself and then started inducing various friends and family to watch it with me. Sorry Robert, your satire turned into a beautiful, honest, true-to-the-core, heartbreakingly sincere piece of Americana. Thank you.

The NASHVILLE soundtrack credits say Karen Black did indeed write "Rolling Stone." Also, I believe, she wrote the "Memphis" that appears on the NASHVILLE album, though allmusic (probably incorrectly) credits both her and Chuck Barry, who had his own "Memphis" song. Sadly, I can find no printed (or online) lyrics to Black's "Rolling Stone," though there certainly are for anything by the group the Rolling Stones, or "Papa Was a Rolling Stone," etc. I'd love to know if the first line of her song really is, "He brought me sweet joshua..." Joshua (per U2) is another name for the Yucca cactus, which certainly isn't native to Tennessee!
