What a badly informed hatchet job on Jimmy Stewart. In Stewart's time Hollywood was almost totally run by Jewish men. And Kirk Douglas, Walther Mathau and many more famous actors of the time said, many times in public, that these powerful Jewish men could not be trusted. But Douglas and Mathau were Jewish themselves so could not be accused of antisemitism. As for Woody Strode, he mentions in his autobiography that over the course of a few movies he made with Jimmy Stewart, he found the man to be a 'kind and gentle soul'. On the other hand, Strode thought that both John Ford and John Wayne were not overly fond of black men and were very loud in making their feelings known.

As almost everyone has said, it's ridiculous to judge people from 80 and even 90 years ago by today's social norms and knowledge. It turns out, the claims about James Stewart aren't even true. John Wayne's remarks in that interview, on the other hand, were woefully ignorant, even by the standards of 1971. There were overwhelmingly large numbers of highly educated black people. But most of this is akin to people who say that Mark Twain, born in Mississippi in 1835, was a racist. In 2022, sure, In his time, he was almost as anti-racist as he could get. People just don't understand that these are social ideas and they change over time. Let's hope that, a hundred years in the future, the best attitudes of our time are not considered woefully ignorant and racist by future generations that also do not understand the nature of history and social change.

Inaccurate is your interpretation of John Wayne's quote. John Wayne said is that their are far to few blacks in acting and the movie industry's schools so the level of talent and numbers are just a fraction of that to the whites, and untill that changes the whiles will continue to dominate because of the ratio of blacks to whites attending film and acting Colleges.

Not defending John Wayne, but a few points: - He once borrowed his Rio Bravo hat (which was actually his own personal property) to Sammy Davis Jr. for a Western Davis was doing and posed for a pic with him. - He acted alongside Sidney Poitier in THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD (JW played the centurion at Jesus' feet who uttered the words "truly this was the son of God"). Reportedly, the two got along well. - Woody Strode co-starred with Wayne AND Jimmy Stewart in THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE, and while he couldn't stand the best bone in Stewart, he and Wayne got along well. - Roscoe Lee Browne co-starred with Wayne in THE COWBOYS (1972), and said that he and Wayne had alot of respect for each other and that he never got any racist vibes from Wayne at that time. - Wayne himself destested Walter Brennan so much that Wayne once said that he used to think of himself as a Liberal as compared to Brennan's strong Conservative leaning because - according to Wayne - Brennan was filled with pure hatred for anyone with skin darker than his own. You have to remember the times these guys were raised. Sure, Clark Gable grew up in their time as well, but he fought against racism to the point where he threatened to walk off the GONE WITH THE WIND set if the Black actors were mistreated. Hattie McDaniels was also his friend, and she was the one who persuaded him to attend the screening of GWTW after he threatened to boycott the screening after he found out that the cinema wouldn't let her attend. I don't thing John Wayne was racist in the way we know it now. Many of these guys would utter racial epithets because it was part of their upbringing, but some of them were not racist. Like I said, I'm not defending them, just saying what I think, and telling what I heard from people who were associated with some of them. And in case you're wondering, yes, I'm a Black man.

think its all BS, especially Stewart. Most do not know that he remained on active Air Force Reserve until retirement in 1966 after he flew his last mission over Vietnam. He was by then a one star General and was type rated on the B-24, B-17, B-36, B-47, B-29 and the B-57 Hustler. Quite the airforce resume and had black bomber crew members that thought the world of him. Just before his retirement he was promoted to major general. Yup, quite the impressive military record and that was more important to him than his acting career. If you read his autobiography that is quite detailed there is no mention of this nonsense. Yes, he helped Hoover but later in life was discussted at Hoovers private life and at many of the things that he did and would not have been so helpful to him had he known. General Stewart was an impressive, hardworking, loyal patriot and veteran, do not smear him with all this he said, she said BS. Facts or clips of this don't exist cause they never happened so what you have done to his family and memory is so moronic and quite disappointing!!!!!!!!!

They are broken people, seething in their own feelings of impotence, seeking to subjugate others for that rush of "power" they crave, to fill a hole inside themselves which Nothing will ever truly fill. Today, as in the past, they're mental patients, very likely child abuse victims, who've not yet found treatment. And they won't, b/c our society Only cares about $$$ now. Even the Richest, like a certain former "prez" who has long hero-worshipped Nazis, won't get the help they really need, b/c No One will hold rich folks accountable for their wrong doing. We can hate the horrid actions & the attitudes that perpetuate harm, while still pitying the abused children they once were. None of us is born hating other humans. That garbage is taught. We need to unteach a whole lot of people, but we can't, b/c the rich but broken ones in power won't allow it. So, we must find some way to do better by Today's children, instead: no matter their color, religion, gender identity, family wealth, origin, etc. If we truly want to to build anything "great", we need to start at the beginning, in childhood (which requires us to actually care about poor kids as more than political tools to achieve Power). We need to fund Public Ed properly & Not use subpar schools as conveyor belts feeding for-profit prisons. Nothing "great" will ever be built w/ hate, nor inequality. What we'll get instead is repeated "Gilded Ages". Gilding is merely covering garbage w/ a shiny coating so it looks nicer. But it's still Trash. I often wonder how many Einsteins were left undiscovered b/c No One who could invest in them did so. How many times have we missed world-changing discoveries, the cure for cancer, methods to save a planet for our grandkids, etc.? The racists & sexists of our world are "better" than No One. The ones I've met are actually terrible humans. They serve as a warning sign of what abuse of children eventually creates. Often, it's a monster in human form. Further proof? Over a million people didn't die of a "Hoax!". They died b/c too many uncaring people embraced the words of a cult leader who purposely stirs up chaos b/c he enjoys causing pain, and truly cares about No One. This era is Tragic. You state that James Stewart grew up in a small town in Indiana. That is not true. He grew up in a small Pennsylvania town named Indiana. If you want to talk about history, you need to get your facts straight. I'm not a JimmybStewart fan, and I knew where he grew up. It makes me wonder how many more subtle facts you may have gotten wrong.

Wrong: Jimmy Stuart did NOT grow up in the state of Indiana. He was born and raised in Indiana, Pennsylvania.

Racism is not simply if you have nothing good to say …. this is the subject is done as we can see through how racism is still very prevalent today. All of these folks had great careers & that’s what people will remember but it is important to show the truth about folks - hell can’t hurt them now

When it comes to blacks we need to rest but whites keep doing it

Indiana, PA had black people. They worked as servants in his house. His father referred to black people as “n--rs”. Former staff members said Jimmy never used that word although he was not really comfortable with black people. Mrs. Stewart only tolerated her father in law and spent their visits in the kitchen with the black help.

Jimmy Stewart racist? Now that’s bs. My cousin date his son and he proposed to her prior to being drafted. She asked to wait till he came back from war and unfortunately died. Her experience with the Stewart’s was nothing but good comments. To include treatment of ALL people. John Wayne’s statements are taken out of context.

There's not been one man or woman that walked the earth that exposes their innermost thoughts and feelings to the public. Having said that, the important part of acting is to entertain and master the craft. That was achieved by the individuals mentioned. Ultimately, who we really are only ourselves and God knows. Man's or Woman's time on earth is to be judged by God when that time comes. So, in short, people are free to be themselves whether they reveal it or not.

They felt pretty comfortable exposing those hateful innermost thoughts of racism towards others. It most definitely changes my view towards them.. 100%. Sounds like it doesn't bother you very much, but I may be mistaken.

@@wendigo1919 Of course it bothers me but I can't change people's way of thinking neither the unnatural behavior of today's stars. The way you feel is justified but that's what happens when the public is privy to their lives outside of their profession. I feel the same about Ellen. I actually liked her but when she exposed her private sexual preference, it made me look at her differently. Same with Mel Gibson, OJ , Neil Patrick, the list goes on. They really need to keep their lives outside of their profession to themselves. After all who really cares as long as they don't murder or harm others physically.

@@wendigo1919 I'm half black and half white, I'm also a fan of John Wayne. By the liberal definition of racism, none of them can be considered racist (prejudiced, sure, we all are). None of them were in the position of power. They were actors in movies. Who cares whom they associated themselves with or what words they used? I don't look to Hollywood for a lesson in ethics or morality. If I did, the current crop of Hollywood actors and actresses would receive an F in that department.
