NO one man or woman makes singing look so effortless and natural as Karen Carpenter.

Sadly, THIS kind of talent, exhibited by two truly God-gifted individuals, is something that will never be again. Society and what's considered "entertainment" have both devolved to a point that we could never have imagined back when this first aired. Karen Carpenter is forever missed. Glad to see that handsome Mr. Davidson, now in his twighlight years, is still out there putting on great live shows.

John turns 81 this month. He still has a great voice and mind. I was watching an interview he did recently and he mentioned that he had dated Karen for a short time. I have seen his show he used to do in Branson and really enjoyed them. He’s so talented.

I love these videos I’d never before seen. I never truly appreciated John Davidson but he seems to be a wonderful, genuine human being. What really gets me is his genuine affection for his duet partners, both Mama Cass and Karen Carpenter. You can tell he has sincere affection for them as people and talents. I can still remember where I was when Karen Carpenter died. I was working part-time while in college... stocking shelves at K-Mart, when her passing was announced on a radio station playing overhead. It was quite shocking as I had all the Carpenter LP's and she was so young. Anyway, does go to show what impact she had on pop culture at the time.

@MarcusStaAnaBurSelF3 жыл бұрын
@@coppingtonfarnham7731 Yup, I think she sounds like a cross between the male and female voice because of her unique contralto range, making her a female bass. I always thought of Richard as the creative genius that started it all, he was the composer, producer, arranger, musician, pianist, singer, songwriter. Though sometimes, I think he gets overshadowed by his sister, I think they really compliment each other when it comes to music making. I’m grateful Richard is still alive and kicking to this day, fills a smile to my face, but I’m sad that Karen died in such an early age.

She always seemed so happy, relaxed and downright enjoyed these tv specials, obviously in her element. I wonder if it was because these moments back then seemed so fleeting and never expected anyone to ever see them again. So “what if” anyone in her inner circle (you know what I mean) had any criticism or judgement. Someone else was in control fo these. They had fun doing it. And the irony is, .....now technology and streaming channels like this, provide a true time capsule and historical document......priceless!!!!

i don't have that good an ear - i would never have expected these two voices to sound so good together - and it's a good song for them - it's a surprise to see Karen in choreography - i think John's all around professionalism helped here - the musical arrangement seems to be direct steal from the Carpenter's rendition on their As Time Goes By album - with John substituting for Richard's part
@merlin8537 Жыл бұрын
On "As Time Goes By," Richard was actually substituting for John's part in the "Music, Music, Music" sound track. Richard and Karen did their own mixes of several of the songs done with/by Ella Fitzgerald and John Davidson on the TV special (because of copyright considerations), and those are what you hear on "As Time Goes By."

John Davidson was the most natural entertainer that I've ever seen perform, going way back to O'Keefe Centre in Toronto back in the 1970's. And the quality and range of his singing voice was comparable to Englebert Humperdinck's. John just never had a hit record or two, but still, so many TV shows and appearances lead to a very long and successful career. And, thank God, he's very secular and an atheist to boot!(lol!)
@JohnnyGNV2 жыл бұрын
John Davidson really deserved to have a Hit Record - He was under contract to Columbia Records and that's impressive but they needed to be more aware of his vocal talents and find tunes that were more tailored for his voice. I feel he was always a tad underrated as a Performer.
@jonathansmith92352 жыл бұрын
@@JohnnyGNV Very underrated, but still a great performer nonetheless. He did many shows in Vegas and across the country in some of the best venues. He lacked the, per say, uniqueness, and his voice wasn't as distinguishable as an Elvis, Sinatra, Andy Williams Tom Jones, Sammy Davis Jr., or Engelbert But he did release 12 albums within a twelve year span, but nothing since 1976, as his style of music was generally considered passe by the 1970's. But, his energy and enthusiasm and boyish charm, and his intelligence got him through the rest of his career pretty well. Plus, he had that hair.(lol!) But hey, he got to be on Ed Sullivan.(Of course, so did guys twirling plates. And, a mouse.)(lol!) He is now 80, and lives in Sandwich, New Hampshire.

Yes. It's what happened in nearly every feature film or television show that involved singing. The tracks were pre-recorded by the artists, who would then lip synch to a playback during the actual shoot. It was still John Davidson and Karen Carpenter singing. They had just done their vocals earlier. This was done because it was much easier to control the audio than it would have been if they had been singing live. One notable exception to this was Rex Harrison in My Fair Lady because he flatly refused to lip synch to a playback.
