"getting fat" was not just about weight; it was mostly referring to the fact that before the group formed and got famous, Cass was the only one actually beginning a career and "getting fat" from the money she was making in music. Actually, a lot of live tv performances during this time were lip synced, because the equipment required to broadcast a live music performance was expensive and complicated. There is actually a clip of the Mamas and Papas performing on the Ed Sullivan show, where Michelle was eating and talking to John during the performance in protest of the producers making them lip sync! Meanwhile, Mama Cass was singing so powerfully that the audience can hear her vocals over the prerecorded track. I am not at all doubting the pure talent of these artists, just a fun fact!
