Thank you for highlighting the great Carpenters. Great musicians !! Karen considered herself a drummer who could sing . Karen is a great loss to music 🥰

She studied Jazz drumming under professional drummer Bill Douglass, who played with some of the Greats of the late 1940s, 1950s & 1960s. Drums were truly her first love. As others have said, she always considered herself a drummer first who just happened to sing. My favs to watch her play in the 1974, Japan concert are "Mr. Guder", "Help!" & "Johnny B. Goode" & the entire concert in Australia, 1972. She plays the entire concert (before Cubby O'brien joined the band) except for maybe 3 songs. The entire rest of the concert was her on the huge kit built similar to Hal Blaine's. Thank you so much for honoring Karen's love for her drums. Thank you!

Great job! Wonderful analysis! You're right, these two were one of the most talented duo's in musical history. ( if not the best ). Love to watch her smiling and playing the drums. Her singing could bring a tear to my eye but watching her play the drums always brings a smile on my face.

Music Mindset, thank you for your eloquent and perceptive analysis of the musical brilliance of the Carpenters. Their talent and music are timeless. They were humble hardworking artists who never became arrogant egomaniacs over their own extraordinary and well deserved successes.

Another warm piece on Karen. She was a Good drummer with a capital G. I’d add Very Very to it IMHO. That young man on the drums in the BBC show was Cubby O’Brien as in Cubby and Karen from the M I C, See you real soon. He became their road drummer (concerts and TV Shows) for most of their run in the 70’s. In studio it was mostly Hal Blaine on drums Jim Gordon did some big ones and a few various others. Karen did the first album Offering/Ticket To Ride and Now and Then (the Ferrari album) with the exception that Hal did Jambalaya. Hal dis C2Y and RD&M and most of the early songs. On the concerts Karen sat in on some songs and either the guy with the big mop of hair (I don’t know his name) or Cubby on main drums. They usually did percussion or tambourine when Karen sat down at her kit. The exception was when Cubby did a battle of the drums with Karen like in that BBC show. There’s a story involving Cubby. The Carpenters were in Las Vegas, I assume a show, and Buddy Rich was also playing at a hotel. Cubby took Karen to see Buddy. Since he knew Buddy, he took Karen back stage before the show to introduce them. Buddy said to her upon meeting Karen “you’re one of my favorite current drummers!” Karen was to say the least flummoxed. Later she asked Cubby if he meant that, Cubby said “he said it!” On your first Carpenters analysis I left a comment with some suggestions. One was for the 1970 live performance for The Ed Sullivan Show, are you familiar with that performance? It’s got Karen drumming and singing fully live. Highly recommend that one. Keep up the great work. ❤️

thanks, mindset! she had a passion for drumming, but once that beautiful voice was discovered, she was pushed to do the vocals.. and good for all of us.... but she was not happy being a "front person".. from what I have heard... she was an amazing musician, and is greatly missed!

Fun fact. Karen also loved Mickey Mouse and collected anything Mickey. The other drummer is Cubby O'Brian, who was one of the original Mouseketeers. No denying the joy on her face playing her beloved drums!!!

Thank you Music Mindset for honoring the Carpenters! It makes me happy to see people, such as yourself, take time to appreciate such rare and wonderful talent like Karen and Richard. I am the same age as Karen would have been, had she lived a longer life, so I identify with her very much. I cried when she passed away. It was like losing my sister or best friend. I am so thankful that they had a treasure trove of music for all of us to enjoy. I love and appreciate their music and talents more now than when I was younger, if that is even possible!

I know you are just reading someone’s article but she did not ever play the piano. I was at her mausoleum last year, went to the house, the school, etc just to pay my respects to this legend. ❤
