It's amazing she could perform so brilliantly when she was so emaciated! You can clearly see that she was a virtuoso on the drums (and admired by top drummer Buddy Rich), but she also was the best female singer of all time. And it's great to see her brother showing off his keyboard talents.

I was born in 1962. If you had a talent back then most parents would encourage it. My dad bought me a drum kit when I was 8 after watching my bash the crap out of various objects with my mum's knitting needles. I was in rock bands from 12 years old and loved every second I was behind my kit. I'm now 60 and because of some personal tragedies I no longer play. It's the only thing in life I really miss. Karen was an amazing drummer and a beautiful human being. Much missed. ✌️♥️🇬🇧

On June 24, 1966, the first time Richard and Karen Carpenter performed at the Hollywood Bowl, they were part of a jazz trio, not a pop duo. She was only 16 on the drums. Somewhere there is a tape of this. The Richard Carpenter Trio won three trophies, including the “Sweepstakes” at the “Battle Of The Bands,” a talent competition held annually at the Hollywood Bowl; but when Wes Jacobs [upright bass player] was accepted at Julliard Music School in New York, the trio disbanded. Lucky thing, the Carpenters went on to become who they were. If the bass player had not gone on to Julliard, wonder what would have happened? More jazz trio?

She overheard executives saying she was too fat to be behind the drums and she took hold of that and became anorexic and died at the age of 32. Her mother was incredibly controlling of her as well and back then they did not have any help for this kind of thing. Her death brought complete awareness to the disease

I loved Carpenters! You're right about female drummers not really being a thing at that time. I began band in 4th grade, mid 70s (Yeah, just aged myself there. Lol) The girls were not allowed to pick ANY percussion instrument to play. Played clarinet, then sax for several years but man, I really wanted to play those drums!

This was a fantastic video review, I've never seen them play this what a phenomenal performance! I knee she played drums but you rarely saw it I think I saw her play one song on drums in my life and this was just at another level for anyone tbh especially the tricks with running up n down having them spread out then running back to the kit and smashing it out the park! What a talented lady she was! And her brother fantastic pianists and songwriter too he definitely displayed his own talent here they clearly had a passion for jazz and classical music aswell as pop music and I'd imagine, possibly she may have even liked rock being a drummer who knows? Just utterly tragic that she died she was one of those souls that lights up the world and will be remembered for generations to come through her music she seemed so pure her voice and smile just tragic that someone who brought so much happiness to the world could suffer so much and ultimately die so young! Anyhow thanks great review.. Cheers from London England 👍😎🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🙏 Have you reviewed "Cream" the "reunion concert 2005" and sing "Toad" with Ginger Baker playing an IMMENSE drum solo for much of the song, possibly the best drum solo of all time tbh. And given their age and first and only time they played together in 35 years before Jack Bruce died and then Ginger Baker couple years ago. They played like they'd never been apart! It you've reviewed it apologies haven't seen it but if not Please do review the Cream 2005 reunion concert at the Royal Albert Hall, playing "Toad" as it's focussed around Ginger bakers immense Drum solo that tune and at his age when they got back together the effort and skill he still had was RIDICULOUS as a virtuoso Jazz Drummer primarily. They're ALL fantastic songs with virtuoso Drums Bass and Guitar obviously being 3 VIRTUOSOs in their own fields so well worth a watch...

the songs they are using in this are by George Gershwin....Strike up the Band, It's Wonderful, etc. Karen did more to inspire little girls [and boys] to become a musician, in this one performance, than anyone else I've ever heard of. No boring lectures about classical music like Bernstein did on TV, just go right to it and demonstrate by playing. Richard Carpenter as well.
