My late husband was a double above the knee amputee. He drove absolutely beautiful cars using hand controls. When he had his Centennial Corvette many years ago, a woman, very much like this gem, came up to the window lecturing us about parking handicap and also accusing us of having a fake placard. She threatened to call the police, we laughed and said, “Go ahead. We’ll wait.” She was parked behind us and refused to move anyway. About 10 minutes later a policeman arrived and when the lady’s back was turned, my husband opened his door, assembled his wheelchair and rolled up to the front of his car. He sat there, arms crossed, just waiting. The officer pointed to my husband as she was ranting and when she turned around the look on her face was priceless! The woman started coming towards my husband yelling at him for not telling her that he didn’t have legs and that he was in a wheelchair. He just nodded his head and laughed at her. The officer warned her to calm down before she caught some serious charges. In the end, she received tickets for being illegally parked (behind us) with no hazards as well as having expired registration 😂 It was beautiful

Oh that's fantastic! Not the lack of legs, of course, but the Karen being an idiot. I'm also sorry for your loss. 😢 I do hope you are doing okay enough. I know how loss is, sadly. Hugs 🫂 I have disabilities, but you can't just see them. I have my limbs and I "don't look" disabled. I'm not to the point of needing wheelchair, but I do have a cane and sometimes I need to use those little Mart carts in stores, especially big ones. I try my best not to, unless I'm having a severely painful day and absolutely have no choice but to go to store myself. I don't trust Walmart delivery of groceries and stuff bc the separate company that has the pickers and drivers will steal your groceries. I get all sorts of dirty looks, and I understand them, but the assumption that I'm young (35) so it's impossible for me to be disabled is just aggravating. There are children BORN with heart defects and cancer and all sorts of problems, so how do they know that's not the case?! I don't have those, but I was injured really bad in an accident at 17. My while left foot/leg, hip, and back are all screwed up. If you see me walk you can tell, but you can't "see" anything else. I walk like a penguin on my really bad days and use my cane. I still work bc I don't have a choice. I have neuropathy in my legs and feet. I don't have a disabled placard right now bc I'm trying to walk and get what exercise I can in. That lady in the video was able to walk around and take pictures and stand there, she didn't "look" disabled either! Those people drive me nuts. My mom is very disabled and can barely walk. People see me get out of the car first and give me evil looks, but when I get out my mom's wheelchair and they see her, their attitudes change. My hubby is missing a finger due to a work accident. He can still use the hand and works, etc. He was pushing change of the counter into his hand to give it to a customer and she commented that he was dropping more money than he was getting, and he said, "Well, I'm missing a finger so it's hard to not drop stuff when you have a hole there." Her eyes got wide and she started apologizing. The finger is gone from his right hand, good dominant hand, so it's just natural for him to put that hand under to catch. He's only been missing it for 4 years, but it's hard to change something you've done for 42 years. I'm sorry your husband had to deal with idiots like this lady. ❤

He was a nice looking professional guy in a suit too. I was totally caught off guard. Even when I explained, he said my son wasn't disabled "enough". 🙄 I shouldn't have to explain to people that he is at risk walking in a parking lot. He had multiple falls per day. And was shorter than the back of a car when people back up. They can't see him. You really made me smile. ❤

She’s not disabled then, either! 🤷🏻♀️ I’m in the US. I’ve got a disabled parking placard because I’ve got a few serious conditions that makes mobility difficult. Some days are better than others. On days when I’m not in as much pain and can walk easier, I won’t park in a disabled parking spot. On days when my pain level is much higher thus causing me to have difficulty walking, then I will park in a disabled parking spot. I had some heifer come yelling at me like this woman stating that I didn’t “look disabled” and therefore shouldn’t park where I was. I had gotten out of my car and not gotten my cane out yet. She shut her mouth when she saw my cane. If people have disabled parking placards, that’s between them, their physician and the government that issues it. Period.

My college roommate who is disabled and uses crutches or an electric scooter- once had just pulled into a handicapped parking spot when a lady approached her before she got out. The lady told her she couldn’t park there -that’s for handicapped people only. When my roommate opened her car door and then said - oh then what’s this pointing to her deformed legs that are in leg braces. The woman was so embarrassed for judging her because she was young and not an old person. Handicapped parking isn’t just used by the elderly. There’s many in younger ages who have a handicap that grants them a handicap parking pass. This lady don’t look handicapped at all. She’s walking and moving just fine.

But you just did what she was doing! You judged the severity of her disability by appearance alone, mist as she did with the driver parked there. That’s inappropriate. What do disabled people "look" like? I've had 4 hip replacements, a knee replacement, a 5 hour back surgery replacement. But you can't tell that by just looking at me when I'm sitting down. Next thing I know cops ticketing her for false call, using police to harrass, if i remember correctly. This was like 30 years ago. But look on her face was priceless she had same look even as cop was writing her up. Even before foot was amputated he needed wheelchair due to debilitating rheumatoid arthritis from Lupus. Now I a now his age then with same issues no diabetes or amputations. Though i do need hip and knee replacement. I use a rollator walker mostly. But I do have wheelchair for times i cannot walk. Only i no longer drive and place I live my kid drops me off and can pick me up if i dont decide i can make it to the car. Eventually i will get the plaquard. Recently has a 65ish year old woman scream at me and actually call police because she felt I was abusing a parent or grandparents plate and using it for myself. She kept demanding to know what was wrong with me and finally just to try and defuse the situation I told her I had extremely severe Arthritis and POTS she looks at me and blinks and then says ‘So!’ I asked since she was so concerned what was her disability she says ‘well Duh I’m Old!’ I just laughed as the police pulled up and she is ranting that I’m clearly driving someone else’s car because I OBVIOUSLY am not disabled. The officer quickly compares my plate to my DL and then does the same to her.. which she put up quite the fuss about.. hilariously HER tag wasn’t hers it was her husbands who was not in the car with her… I went about my shopping she got the ticket!

Arrived with the video, my medical records, an ADA advocate, and the laws concerning hippa as well as traffic/parking while disabled. Of course my ticket was tossed, but we requested he be made to take remedial classes without pay and do 40 hrs of community service with disabled people who “ don’t look disabled” and it was granted. I had a tough recovery with a hip replacement. It was a family genetic trait. I was given a handicapped permit to use for parking, but if there were spaces that were fairly near the store I'd just park in one of those. It was a struggle and painful to take the extra steps, but since I live in a community with a lot of elderly people, I wanted to leave the spots for them, as I thought they might be even worse off than me. One day , I was returning to my car, and had parked in a handicap spot because I had been having s rough day because of recent physio, I saw an enforcement person standing by my car. When he saw me, he noticed that I was struggling abd using my cane, he just looked and smiled and wished me to have a good day. Honestly, people feel free to make assumptions and judge others, and it's so inappropriate.

We need the extra wide disable parking to get me in and out of my wheelchair. I had just had my third surgery and in the road as we were moving cross country. We stayed the night in some back water town in Wyoming in a hotel that was mostly empty. Not one person in disabled parking. We were towing a trailer so my husband would pull in sideways taking up the entire disabled parking to get me out, get me to our room and go back and move the car. So next morning he did the reverse.. pulled up in the empty parking lot disabled and came into get our luggage and as he was putting it in the car a lady out there telling him how rude he was.. saying he shouldn’t be in disabled.. mind you parking lot was empty and it was about 6:30 am and he ignored her 100%.. I was watching from the window a few feet away. He told her he didn’t have time to listen to her and if she had a problem to take it to the front desk.. and left her out there puffing on her cigarette.. next to the door BTW.. not the 30 ft required distance from the door.. while he came to get me. Should have seen her face when he wheeled me out and helped me into the car. People constantly give him looks because he’s able bodied but don’t take it in to consideration that it’s the passenger that is disabled !

These ideas of “looking disabled” and not looking like a person with a disability is horrible and offensive as it appears that most people believe it. They taught me to believe that I didn’t deserve a handicap parking space. I spoke to my doctor several times about it over a five year period. My doctor was frustrated and finally told me that I am the reason why handicapped parking was created! Another time she said the dictionary should include my picture in the definition of handicapped. Back then, people didn’t use cell phones for much other than time and calling. I still think that many other people need it more than I do. I had to accept that those other handicapped people were not there to use it, only me. It bothers me a lot that many handicapped kids (mainly) and adults think their disability isn’t visual enough to warrant them using handicapped parking. Im ok thinking about myself that way but not other people. Most days, I use a cane but on bad days I use a walker or a wheel chair. All the scars from a few back fusions and other back operations are covered by me wearing my shirt. It would be nice if only a few Karens had a problem with me parking there but they have infected many others that we shouldn’t be allowed to park there. Most people see Karens like this and blow it off or just don’t care. Karens only act like this when they are targeting a victim. Most people NEVER see a victim and don’t care if we exist. “Wanna report me to the police? Then here lady, let me dial them for you. No, don’t call them on 911, those are for other very important calls and emergencies. Parking doesn’t deserve a 911 call.”

I had open heart surgery when I was 18 years old. After my surgery one of the nurses was nice enough to help me get registered for a temporary disability tag for my Nana's car since she drove me everywhere I needed to go. My doctor gave me strick instructions to not walk long distances for a little while, to slowly rebuild how far and long I could walk. So anytime I needed something from Walmart or a bigger store like that my Nana would park in a normal parking spot and go get me whatever I needed. But when I would need to go to a smaller store like Dollar Tree she would park in a disabled parking spot and let me walk myself in. One day my Nana took me to a dollar tree so I could pick up some small stuff. She parked in the disabled spot, put the tab on and said to text her if I needed any help inside. After buying what I needed I texted my Nana and asked if she could pick me up directly in front of the store cause I was already starting to feel out of breath. She said okay. I walked outside to see this lady literally blocking my Nana from getting out of the handicap spot. She was yelling at my Nana that the tag was fake cause it was red and that she would call the cops. I was already physically tired so I yelled at the lady to move so my Nana could get to me. The lady marched up to me and started yelling that she was gonna call the cops on my Nana for having a fake tag. I told the lady calmly that the tag was temporary and not for Nana's use but mine. The lady yelled at me that I didn't look disabled and tried to get closer to me. I asked the woman not to because I can't moved backwards very well and showered her my surgery wound that still had the tape over it cause it wasn't fully healed. She tried to double down and actually called the police. A woman in the store saw this happening and came out asking if I needed anything. She was the same gal who checked me out and we chatted a bit and I mentioned to her that I had surgery recently. I asked her if she had a chair I could sit on till the cops arrived and she brought me one. My Nana pulled up to the curb and we waited with the lady till the cops came. She kept going on and on while we were waiting. When the cops finally showed up the were practically hounded by the woman. When they came over to talk to me my Nana turned off her car and came to my side with the tab in hand. The officer asked for both of our IDs, asked who the tab was registered to and for what reason. Looked up the tab and confirmed it was for me and it was a temporary one. When I showed my healing surgery wound and explained to the cop that my doctor was having me practice small distances he agreed we weren't in the wrong and told that lady to not harass people like she did to us. She got a warning and we were allowed to drive home. Thankfully during first 3 months of healing this was the only incident with an unreasonable person we had encountered. I'm all healed now and will be celebrating 1 year since surgery this August and can now walk much longer distances without much trouble 🥳

It REALLY irritates me that people look at a person using a handicapped parking space, and if they are not in a wheelchair or a scooter, or hobbling, that they assume that they are not deserving of a handicap placard. Some people have disabilities that are not readily apparent, such as COPD, or as in your case a heart condition that limits their ability to walk without struggling to breathe or becoming weak to the point of needing assistance. Then along comes the handicap Karen Kop, that gets ballistic because you are not in a wheelchair, and gets all butt hurt when you show them your placard and accuses you of it being fake. They really need to get a life for their miserable selves.

This happened to me too. I had just gotten into my car & was preparing to leave. An old lady came to my door and rapped on my car window with the handle of her cane and scared me big time! I cracked the window and said, “Can I help you?” She angrily told me she had to park in the row behind me because I was parked in the handicapped space. When I pointed to the handicapped tag on my mirror she said, “Well, I’m sure YOU are not as handicapped as I AM!” As she walked away cussing while declaring her more severe disability I said to her, “I didn’t realize this was a competition!” Seriously couldn’t believe it. Now, there are many times I don’t get a handicapped spot where I live because they are all occupied. I don’t have a temper tantrum. I just accept that it’ll be a longer walk this time.

♿️♿️♿️♿️ l've had to "walk" pretty far from a regular parking spot but I'm in a bright red power wheelchair. As I was passing the trunk, the car started moving. Damn near tipped me over but my blood curdling scream from me and my daughter stopped the man. He of course apologized a lot but he also told me he can not see me behind his car. I was too short. He never saw me but saw my daughter who was a bit behind and she wasn't close enough for him to wait. Please anyone in a power wheelchair or scooter pleaseee watch all parked cars. They simply can't see us. I hope I never get tipped like that again let alone run over. ♿️ ♿️ ♿️ ♿️

I was in a wheelchair for three years, sometimes when I knew it would only be a short way to go, I'd try to walk on crutches, but most of the time when we were anywhere in public, I had my wheelchair. Either way, thanks to that my Mom was allowed to park in the disabled space when I was with her. More than once we had people that would nowadays be called Karens and Kens come up to us telling us that it is a disabled space and asking Mom what her disability was. In the beginning, she was very confused and asked what they were talking about, after a while we got used to it. Either way, those people keot telling her she doesn't look disabled and she'd point at me saying "my daughter is literally sitting in a wheelchair right in front of you." They, and with "they" I mean ALL OF THEM, always went "well, yeah, but SHE isn't driving the car. Where is YOUR disability?"

She doesn’t “look” disabled either! If she truly is disabled, she should know better than to say such a thing. My mom had an invisible disability and lived in agony every day. I’ll never forget one year, on my birthday, we were approached by a complete douche of a man who berated us for parking in a disabled parking spot. She had a parking pass but only ever used it on her really bad days because she wanted to make sure the disabled spots were available to those who needed them most. The man claimed to be a doctor and followed us around the store continuing his tirade. I finally reported him to the store.

@@terre08there are laws regarding asking, but they may only apply to business. I work at a museum that does not allow pets. However, anyone can walk in with their dog and walk in because we can’t ask them if the dog is a service animal or not. (vest or no vest… but vests mean little any more because you can just buy them online) The only thing we can do is if the animal causes a disturbance. Although I’ve never once seen them ask anyone to leave, even when the dog was barking and clearly causing a disturbance and making other guests uncomfortable. Yeah, it’s not against the law to question someone about their disability, However,it is quite rude and disrespectful however, if you go up to a person and, ask that! Especially, if your not a doctor, nurse, a doctor’s secretary, a testing technician, a hospital or someone with The Social Security Administration, The DFC/ The Department Of Family And Child Services, The Human Resources Services Office/ Community Services where they are eligible to receive or may already receive benefits. If you are a total stranger your not entitled to pry in another person’s business, just like you they are human, you treat them just the same as you would another person. I became disabled right before, I turned 30 and, been nearly disabled close to 40 yrs and, let me tell you, I have had people say some rude things and just assume what they have NO Knowledge of! No One has to explain their self to NO ONE! People Like To Just Be Nosey As 👺🔥! No Joke 💯%‼️🤦🏼♀️🙊🤦🏼♀️🙊 On top of people that like to be nosy, they also like to be bullies!

She’s so ignorant. She doesn’t know the issue called “visibility.” Many disabled people don’t have visibility but they could be severely disabled. If his doctor says he qualifies for it, he does. It’s extremely inappropriate for her to ask about his condition(s). Even the cops can’t ask anything except “does that badge/placard belong to you.” And considering that she feels she “needs it more than he does,” she sure is moving around on her feet quite well! When she said he doesn’t look disabled, he should’ve said “thank you!” He qualifies to use it, and he was there first!

To be fair, not all disabilities are visible. If you have a heart condition you can also have a disabled parking placard, or if you've had recent surgery, or even have nerve damage or a chronic pain condition. There are people who abuse family and friend's placards, but not every person who has disabled parking rights is someone with mobility issues. That being said, disabled spots are first come, first serve. There can be a bigger conversation for why parking lots limit their number of disabled parking spaces, but you can't harrass people to leave a spot they're in.
