"My favorite singer in the place was Karen Dalton. Karen had a voice like Billie Holiday's and played the guitar like Jimmy Reed." - Bob Dylan (from Chronicles, Vol.1)
"All I can say is that she sure can sing the shit out of the blues" - Fred Neil.
Karen Dalton recordings are available from lightintheattic... and feature wonderful liner notes from Nick Cave, Devendra Banhart,Lenny Kaye and others.

Yesterday any way you made it was just fine,
So you turned your days into night-time,
Didn't you know, you can't make it without ever even trying?
And something's on your mind, isn't it
Let these times show you that you're breaking up the lines,
Leaving all your dreams too far behind,
Didn't you see, you can't make it without ever even trying?
And something's on your mind.
Maybe another day you'll want to feel another way, you can't stop crying,
You haven't got a thing to say, you feel you want to run away
There's no use trying, anyway.
I've seen the writing on the wall,
Who cannot maintain will always fall,
Well, you know, you can't make it without ever even trying.
And something's on your mind, isn't it
Tell the truth now, isn't it
And something's on your mind, isn't it

Sorry but I prefer the original version. It's more raw and her voice sounds more emotional and I can listen to her singing all day and the violins are fantastic.

The original is so much more impactful for me because of the band's close empathy, especially the piano and the violin. But it's a blessing to have this alternate version. I believe this song may be Karen singing to herself about her own drug use which was a problem during the recording of the album, and which led her to end up dying young on the streets of New York. Friends in the early 70s went to see her in the Village and her huge stage fright made her leave the stage and not complete the show. I have read that she apparently bought into the idea that the artist, being so much more sensitive, has more need of substances. Don't know who plays on this version, but some of the musicians on the album went on to play behind Janis Joplin in the Full Tilt Boogie Band. Perhaps they were referred to Janis because of having backed Karen, another scratchy-voiced singer.

I like this version better than the album version. I think everything that everything that version contains is concealed here. This one shows how things doesnt always have to be expressed att full level to still be felt.

Sounds like a new backing track with an alternate vocal put on top. If this were original I would at least expect where it came from, the musicians and producer to be listed in the credits.

I wonder who the musicians are on this cut - can't be the same people from the album version. Sounds like more polished/studio ready guys than the album version(who were kind of ragged, but made a more emotionally impactful version). Anybody got any details on where this version came from and who played on it?

... the phrasing here is excellent(!), much more better than in the album version... it also has a greater emotional expression due to it´s more regular pitch, distance(?), softness and evenness in my opinion... it´s deeper...

I'm not sure what your motivation was in creating this, but I have to say you missed the mark. By increasing the "bounce" of the music you have diminished the emotional impact of the vocal. It's also obviously an overdub, as the tempo and accents of the vocal are out of sync with the backing. I suggest you keep the backing track and seek an appropriate singer to re cut the vocal. You may end up with a first rate cover version.

@@lancejohnson127 Hi.Do you actually understand the issue? The original track by Karen is AMAZING. This phony "remix" has drums added that do not fit, and an obtrusive steel guitar that tends to conflict with the vocal.

This is a complete forgery. The backing is recently recorded. The vocal, in a different TEMPO, has been lifted off the original recording and slapped down on this FAKE. StashPuppets is a phuqer. And to all the geniuses of "what does it mean?" - the song is not Karen's. It was given to her by the writer. ... there's this internyet thing - so go find out.

The phrasing is so terrible over this backing track must have taken ages and still the sync sucks, how depressing, cheerful backing track tho, should record vocals like someone mentioned instead of this vampired Frankenstein version
