New subscriber here! *Note* (sorry, this comment is very long): the "long neck" tribe is actually part of the Karenni subgroup of Karennic peoples. Karennic peoples include Karen & Karenni. Karen peoples call themselves "K'nyaw." Karenni peoples call themselves "Kayah," "Kayan," etc. Each group has multiple subgroups. For example, Karen people have S'gaw Karen & Pwo Karen. The people in this video are part of the Lawhi subgroup of the Kayan Karenni people. Even among the Karenni subgroups, not all of them wear neck rings. It helps to think of it as similar to the large grouping of Anishinaabe peoples of North America. The Anishinaabe group includes multiple peoples, with each people having their own subgroups, and related peoples. The most famous is the Ojibwe people, but the Menominee, Odawa, & Potawatomi people are all in part of the larger umbrella of Anishinaabe groups. Yet all of those people speak mutually-unintelligible languages (even though on the surface they may sound similar). AND, even the Ojibwe people have subgroups which some debate may be semi-separate, like the Salteaux, Nipissing, & Oji-Cree. It's complicated. Just like how Karennic peoples are complicated. *If you remember nothing else (understandable), remember that the "long neck" people are Karenni, not Karen.* The Karennic peoples of Burma & Thailand are indigenous, just like the Anishinaabe peoples of North America are indigenous. Karennic peoples' cultures and often the religious practices (many practice Shamanism or Christianity instead of Buddhism of the dominant culture of Burma & Thailand) make them a target for bias, discrimination, & gen0cide. If you decided to read this far down the comments, you might find it interesting that the USA has a LOT of Karen & Karenni people. The U.S. states of Arizona, Arkansas, California, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington, Wisconsin, and *especially Minnesota* have Karen & Karenni refugees who resettled here. Minnesota actually has the largest-per-capita population of Karen people outside of Asia, although I don't know the number of Karenni-per-capita in comparison. And let me just say: if you become friends with Karen & Karenni people, they will often share lots of incredible homemade food with you! You definitely need to try traditional Karen & Karenni cuisine as well as watch them do traditional dances and sing. If you ever visit my state, I might be able to help connect you with Karen & Karenni people & events.

Watching from Los Angeles CA. You forgot to ask them as to why they want long neck? What’s the real reason behind it! Am curious. TY.
@CorySchadt9 ай бұрын
I opted to not visit as I had read that these people continue to use the rings not out of tradition, but to get tourist dollars.
@worldnomac9 ай бұрын
Wow, it's intriguing how cultural practices can be viewed from different angles!!🙏
@CorySchadt9 ай бұрын
I understand that this was traditionally a cultural practice. But opponents now think it could be exploitative, that the use of the rings can cause permanent body disfigurement.
