My mother was originally from Glasgow before her family moved down to England. That song is wonderful as it's reminds me of my Scottish heritage I remember this being sung by Karen Matheson at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games closing ceremony when the Commonwealth Games flag was lowered and handed over to the Gold Coast.

Fabulous blending of two of my faves. Paul Brady holds a special place in my heart. First heard him on my honeymoon, walking along Grafton street, Dublin, and some record store was playing " The Island". Hubbie went right in and bought the album (yes...we're that old) and we still have it and I still love it. They both have such incredible, distinct voices. I was not familiar with this song even though I listen to a lot of traditional music. Gorgeous.

I really enjoy this version with the text as well. It is really wonderfully sung. And Karen Matheson is a great singer, she deserves more recognition. Love can be so sad! A great Robert Burns song! At school you wondered what was so special about Robert Burns, as you were too young to get it, but poetry such as this song is just exquisite and I have never heard human emotions put to paper and song so very well and so fittingly. Honestly, 'had we never loved sae kindly, had we never loved so blindly, never met or never parted, we had ne'er been broken-hearted' who writes such beautiful and sad sentiments that I am sure every person feels in their hearts. Incredible song and poem.

Ae fond kiss, and then we sever; Ae fareweel, alas, for ever! Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee, Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee. Who shall say that Fortune grieves him, While the star of hope she leaves him? Me, nae cheerful twinkle lights me; Dark despair around benights me. I'll ne'er blame my partial fancy, Naething could resist my Nancy: But to see her was to love her; Love but her, and love for ever. Had we never lov'd sae kindly, Had we never lov'd sae blindly, Never met or never parted, We had ne'er been broken-hearted. Fare-thee-weel, thou first and fairest! Fare-thee-weel, thou best and dearest! Thine be ilka joy and treasure, Peace, Enjoyment, Love and Pleasure! Ae fond kiss, and then we sever! Ae fareweel, alas, for ever! Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee, Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee.
