I was today years old when I realized another point of view on the saying “Be better than me.” My mother said it to my sister and I, adding in she had a Master’s degree, now what were we going to do. My sister and I went and earned professional doctorate degrees (I even added in a MBA later). I’ve said this to my 12-year old daughter, and I see I need to reframe. Thank you Dr. Black for the prospective. I want her to have all of me, our village, and more! ❤️
@jtFacts77
@jtFacts77 Жыл бұрын
No you don't need to reframe. The good doctor is wrong. Is it wrong for a drug addicted mother to tell her child to be "better" than me? Is it wrong for consistent womanizing, cheating, lying husband to tell his son to be better than him? You are hearing what Dr. Black said through a non-critical lens. He's wrong and YOU of all people should be able to see it, with your "professional doctorate degree". Here is some advice. There is a youtube channel called "Soft White Underbelly", where the host interviews the margins of society. Listen to some of the origin stories of prostitutes, children of parents who sexually abused them, drug addicts, etc. During moments of lucidity, some of those parents told their children that they should be better than them, and THEY WERE RIGHT. I guarantee you will leave that channel with a different perspective. Perhaps Dr. Black should listen to those stories also. He might learn something.

When Dr. Black said oooh and put on his glasses, I was expecting him to start speaking in tongues, then as the conversation was winding down I was waiting for the organ to start playing and the passing of the plate. *Hopefully, when WE know BETTER, WE do BETTER! I think many BLACK FAMILIES were just culturally socialized to say "BE BETTER THAN ME!" Just like these same families probably said you have to be TWICE as better and work TWICE as HARD, something I'm sooooooooo HAPPY my family NEVER said to me! Imagine killing yourself to be better than MEDIOCRITY and (know that you can't compete with) NEPOTISM!!!!!! Thank you Dr. Black for that 💕cultural gem💕, maybe that will shift the mindsets of many!*

Another delicious and gem-filled program that made me run it back again because a few of the gems touched on topics that I think the audience would have enjoyed hearing Dr. Carr and Dr. Black volley with for a moment. Could the parents' admonition "to be better than" be a Sankofa connection with the ancestors urging us to reclaim Maat? Could knowing the factual history of the "42 Negative Confessions" be a motive factor or blueprint for not being less than but becoming the beings our ancestors envisioned for humanity over 5000 years ago? Thank you for these synapse firestorms Prof. Hunter!

Also, we SHOULD be better anyway because some of the hard lessons our parents had to learn, we walk into the world ARMED with the knowledge of those hard lessons so we don’t have to bump our heads to get it. Besides that, he went off today!! I love it when he gets in his bag on a spiritual level!!

Wow! You are so on point! It’s like a prison to live under this. I think we (humans) are being asked to evolve our collective identities regardless of “race.” You said it, it’s about Liberation. It’s a continued journey, a life long journey. And if Black people as the Parents of humanity can evolve identity beyond race and color, the others, our children, will learn from us. And, like you said, it’s about Consciousness. Consciousness of the One collective human. Being conscious of the human assignment given by the universe, To Continue To Evolve. And can’t and won’t until we get out of the prison mindset shackled by race.

Karen and Dr. Black: I 've never articulated "Be better than me" to my children, but, while raising them, that was always my goal--"better" in any way possible, but principally, Spiritually better--I think, more Evolved than me. As in the phrase, "Every generation stands on the shoulders of the one who went before them." Always striving toward the most highly evolved expression that the Creator has for us. I was drawn to your u tube clips, Karen bc I think you may believe that, too--though I could be way off base here. BTW, I am one of those white people who tunes in to learn from you. I have no desire to oppress others. Neither is oppression the solution for us. We are all interested in equality. I am trying to break the yolk of oppression Revenge is not the goal. Justification and a return of Equity is the goal. He is correct about equity because in reality we have the propensity to be > Peace family

All oppressed people DON'T dream of the right to oppress or to oppress. That's a totally ridiculous blanket statement. Yes. I'm offended. Race will, in fact, disappear when it is no longer economically useful to white people. They associated economics with race so they will have to disassociate it. As for having a need for power in order to oppress, that is certainly culturally generated. The problem is the framing of this discussion as a judgement on black people with white people standing the frame.

Dr Hunter I request that a follow up video be done to this video and perhaps be entitled Restitution is not Revenge, Restitution is not Equality, Restitution is not Subordination. Restitution requires full restoration of what was taken and in the absence of being able to fully restore --just like any insurance policy -- then the insurer must replace in order to bring about full restoration to the victim. We must be careful not to confuse the necessity for justice and restoration with equality as those are different things. When a Prosecutor seeks justice she is not seeking equality instead the purpose of prosecution is to protect the innocent and convict the guilty, not to seek revenge, to protect the constitution and legal rights of all persons. A significant part of seeking justice is Restitution in other words to restore what was taken. When our parents say they want us to be better than them, it means they want us to be absolutely free to be all that they were prohibited to be whether we choose to be doctors, lawyers, engineers, rocket scientist, US President, the Head of the NFL, etc. Note: We have to be careful not to fall into the predators playbook of "taking the higher ground, when they go low we surrender the right to restoration," fail to seek justice and restoration for past enslavement and living in the current enershia of failing to achieve full restoration otherwise we fail ourselves, our children, our future unborn thrivers, and our ancestors. We all strive to acquire material things which are necessary for the preservation of life and some strive in excess of necessities which is their prerogative. We are individuals not a monolith! One of the main difference between the oppressors and the non-oppressor is that the non-oppressor has never sought to oppress but instead pursues freedom for all, liberation for all and restoration for those who have been oppressed and those who are currently marginalized to restore them to a level playing field which does not require for anyone to go low while the oppressor goes high.

I think the message got a little muddled but this was a very good and important discussion. What I saw as the final take away was that black people are trying to compete and win at capitalism and instead we should be focused on being our best selves. (Whatever that may mean). This is very ambiguous and as a group our goal is ambiguous or non-existent because I don't get it. When Europeans arrived in America they initially went along with the system the natives had set up for a short while. But they had in their minds the idea of western civilization and racialized capitalism and while they needed to follow the natives for the short term and learn their ways as to not die in the wilderness they soon implemented their system which they feel is so good it needs to be imposed and established worldwide. For right now we need to yes compete and do all we can under the current system of capitalism as we see our people becoming more unhoused and displaced. However what is the grand vision. I hear the talk of community and harmony etc. The result of you guys logic is capitalism and western civilization have to go. It needs to be replaced with a more cooperative form of economics. But that is not what I have ever heard the CBC, tha Karen Hunter show, or black america at large call for. At least not full throated. So i would advise black people until we as a group actually get some imagination and some goals like free people then its in your best interest to do whatever you can under the current system to keep you and your family fed.

@@KarenHunterShow In human history, there have been materialistic societies before without the presence of racism. The Mali Empire is one that comes to mind. So, materialism can’t be the reason why racism will always be with us. Our racial identities are manifestations of racism from the minds of oppressors who were driven by materialism. However, people have always been materialistic, but people have not always had racial identities. To get rid of racism, we have to get rid of all of its manifestations. Racial identity, being one of racism’s manifestations, will always be protected by our racial pride.

I know you have many fans who will agree with you on everything you say but after the first few minutes- I couldn’t watch anymore. Please stop blaming black peoples for racism. Fighting against injustices and inequities have NOTHING to do with materialism or wanting to own somebody else. We do not want to oppress jack!!!Freedom has everything to do with the intangibles. Give me one example of when we have ever oppressed anyone throughout history. It’s not about revenge. It’s about equality. Equality is not abt being less than what you’re worth. Do you suggest we just roll over and stay passive. Sad part- we don’t even fight hard for justice anymore. Dr. Black - I find it insulting to place black peoples in a box and telling America that we are all about materialism and not about humanity, kindness, respect, understanding and forgiveness. We are probably some of the most forgiving , understanding and passive to others but you’re painting us as materialistic and aggressive. I’m so tired of micro aggressions from white and black people. Clearly you want us to continue to accept racism and being poor. Money means health care, housing, safety, protection, transportation, education-survival. I think that it MIGHT be possible to get rid of skin color race based bigotry as time goes on and people are exposed to more people of various skin colors and/or date/intermarry, but it is impossible to get rid of bigotry in general. Remember, bigotry is part of human nature as a potential defense mechanism against things that we don't understand and might perceive to be a possible threat. However, we can overcome our bigotry through socialization and education.
